Auction Software
I wasn't sure where to post this question as there wasn't a general forum. I'm going to be building an auction site and I'm looking for online auction software... free or pay-for software. Something like a php, cgi or asp based web application or something else. I don't even know because I've never looked for something like this before. I found a cgi resource library (can't post a link because I'm a new user) , and I'm looking through the options, but they aren't all that great. I've also found a few other auction applications but I don't know much about them (i.e. if they are reliable, good software, still being developed, etc, etc):

I am creating a auction web site. I am using ASP on the front and SQL Server 2000 in the back. I am trying to figure out a way to get an auction to basically countdown until it reaches 0 seconds left, then to trigger a certain web page to tally who won.
Example:
Auction: HARLEY 2004 MOTORCYCLE
Time: 5 days
So in exactly 5 days or 120 hours the auction needs to know that it has ended and trigger a page to decide the winner.

I am going to design an auction site for a client but before getting into it I need some expert views. Here are somthing I need to know: Which DB is the best. I mean it should be cost-effective. Access, MSSQL or MYSQL? It should be able to handle huge number of request without loosing speed.
What are the concerns regarding security and what are the best ways to overcome security hazards. Anything else that may help me to give a world-class portal to my client.
I lack experience but am striving to learn (and earn). I have relied on this place before and it never dissappointed me. I am sure it won't dissappoint me this time as well.
