Database Efficiency
I'm in the process of optimising the code on my website and wanted to know the best way to do it. The majority of my pages make a connection to the database, create several different recordsets, and then display that data. My site gets alot of traffic and upwards of several hundred concurrent users. I'm trying to determine the most efficient way to do this.
1. Do I make the connection, create my recordsets, display the data, close the recordset, close the connection, clean up.
2. Make the connection, create the recordsets, disconnect the recordsets, close the connection, display the data, close the recordsets, clean up. This is what I am doing now, but am unclear if this is really neccesary as I'm not updating any data, only displaying it.

i am doing a new asp site with a lot of sql queries. i was just wondering if there was a tool to check if all recordsets or DB connections have been closed?
i have combined the main queries into functions, and i just want to check that i haven't missed anything.

I'm creating a pseudo-shopping cart site for a client. Their IT has said that I'm not allowed to use a Database on their servers, so I'm working around that.Currently the user's shopping cart is stored in a cookie (prod ID, quantity), and it takes the Product ID from there and matches it with a product array that I have built into an included file (price, prod name, etc).
Now, I'm thinking about stream-lining this even more (as I would if I had a DB), and considering placing short and long descriptions in each product.So, my question is, how efficient is an array that could be loaded with hundreds of products and includes some lengthy text cells?Or would I be better off pursuing a different direction?

ok so include file is a very useful and powerful tool that asp has. what i'd like to know is how efficient is it since it to looks through all the pages that are lincluded on a single page even if they are not 'used' via an if statement.
is this a memory hog if you have alot of pages that have multiple includes? does this cause any other problems/issues?

I am currently coding an accommodation rentals website and one of the searches required is an availability check.
At the time of booking you search for an accommodation that matches the accommodation type, no. of people and a start and end date from which to book.
I need to return a list of accommodations available using that criteria, I wanted to know if anybody has any ideas how to achieve this and do it efficiently.
at the moment i have a table that lists the accommodations and a bookings table that stores existing bookings.

I have just started using ASP, I am normaly using PHP but I thought ASP might be a good road to go down. I am having a few problems, I am trying to limit the number of records I take out the database but I keep getting errors.
<%
'connection string
datapath=Server.Mappath("guest.mdb")
strconn="PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;DATA SOURCE=" & datapath & ";"
Set CONN = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
CONN.Open strconn
'select all records row by row
DBquery="SELECT * FROM Guests LIMIT 10"
set query=Conn.execute(DBquery)
do while not query.eof
'get a variable from the table
guest_id = query("ID")
guest_name = query("Name")
guest_msg = query("Mesg")
guest_date = query("DateTime")
'print the variable to the screen
response.write guest_id & "<br />"
response.write guest_name & "<br />"
response.write guest_msg & "<br />"
response.write guest_date & "<br />"
response.write "<br />"
'move to the next record
set conn = nothing
query.movenext
loop
%>
I am getting this error;
Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80040e14'
Syntax error in FROM clause.
/guestbook/guest.asp, line 11
can anyone help me?

I work with ASP for several weeks now and i really like it! But until now i have just used it in connection with my localhost. I made connections to a SQL Database and to an ACESS Database with using the ODBC Tool from WIndows!!
Now i want to publish my website but i don't know how to handle the connection string kind of thing. My MySQL-Database is on a different server than the website and i need a connection string where i can type in the server, a password and a username and it should then connect.

Products ---> Products|Customer <--Customer
With regardst the above many-to-many relationship:
Is there any advantage in creating seperate access databases for:
- Customer
- Products
....Rather than keeping them as three tables in one database.
The reason I ask is that I have found that if I am using a ftp approach to
overwriting or updating the remote database there are sometimes problems
with synchronizing data .....This seems to be a better solution?
Am I off base?

I have a Access DB with two tables (Users and tblpersons). Users are stored in table Users and their records in tblpersons. They are able to login, Enter, Search, Update their data.
I want users to be able to Enter and update only their data not other users data.
Example:User_Id 1 when logged in, is able to enter data for any user(1,2,3......) and able to modify their data.

They are on Windows 2000 IIS 5.0 and currently have an older version
of their job database using Access hosted on a Brinkster server.
The new server that they are on, when I contacted the host, they advised me
against creating any new applications using Access, as the server is not meant
for multi-users.
So, I am thinking that they need to get their host to upgrade to a SQL database
and have the job database developed using that.
My question to this forum is: What do you think is the best combination for
improvement here, SQL or MySQL or what, considering that their site is using asp
and hosted on Win2000 IIS 5.0?
Also, any recommendations on scripts that might be already available that could
be customised to their site?

What we have is our own (in house) Windows 2000 Server which runs MS SQL for our data storage and we have writen our own VB6.0 Application which runs of the SQL DB to manange our stock, ordering, price's etc etc. Also we have our own Website with a Web Hosting Company which is also a Windows 2000 Server but can only Run access databases.
What we what to do is somehow have the Access database and the SQL database sync together to have some of the same data in both database's. But I don't know where to start.

This is probably a stupid question (I'm good at those)...
I would like to enable a user to be able to browse to a picture on their local machine and upload that picture to a remote directory where it can then be displayed along with it's other pertinent data.
I thought it might be a good idea to use Front Page's "file upload" feature which includes a "browse" button and prompts me for a storing location - but I can't get it to work and am not even sure if that's its intended purpose.
So my question is two-part, what should my insert or update page look like regarding an upload process, and then how would I link to or display that picture?

rs.Open("select * from states","DSN=IST_SQL;UID=....;pwd=....");
var n=0;
while (!rs.EOF)
{

rs.Close();

i think the following is also to be included in the above code, but i am not sure of the whole connection thing.

I made a database in MS Access and two ASP pages, one with a drop-down box with some options in it and the other one which then shows more data from the database about the chosen option. All of this worked perfectly on my pc but when I uploaded all of this to the server all I get on my website is an empty drop-down box. It seems that my page can't read the data from the database. I'm sure that the path to the database is correct. What could be the reason?

I have a db connect page that keeps the current connections for the live database.My question is, as the local db is named 'local,' is there another name I need to give it and thus call from the connection page?Also, when copying a db, are the permissions (username and pass) copied over with it?

I have an xml dataset.I have an html table that data is bound to and where rows of data are "selectable" with a click. I know how to get to the record in the xm dataset that I want. What I can't seem to figure out is how to move the selected row in the table on the screen so that it highlights the record I want.
Once I get that working in a regular table, I need to get it working in a paged table - that is, move to the correct "page" of data and then highlight the correct record.
