Determining If A Field In A Database Is Empty Using ASP

I am trying to determine if a field in a database is empty or not. The code I have is this....

(before this I have code that opens up the database, gets the data from the table. the var "content" holds the data if any from the database.)

if content = "" then
alert1 = "content field is empty"
else
alert1 = "content field contains text"
end if

This doesn't seem to work. I also tried...
if (content) then
alert1 = "content field is empty"
else
alert1 = "content field contains text"
end if

No luck yet. Any ideas?

Certain Field Empty

i want to count all the records in my database where a certain field is empty.

heres my statement:
"SELECT Count(*) As Total FROM table WHERE field1='value' AND field2=' ' "

gives an error.
If it not possible. can the next be done:
1 count all the records.
2 count the records where field2='Yes'
3 subtract the two to get where field 2 is empty?

i know it's just something small, but i can't seem to figure it out. i also tried field2 != 'Yes'

Check If Field Is Empty

I'm listing records from my db and each company has 3 address lines ie address, address2, address3. In most cases 3 and sometimes 2 are empty. As my ASP looks like this

[VBS]
<p><strong>Address/strong> <%= rs("Address") %><br>
<%= rs("Address2") %><br>
<%= rs("Address3") %><br>
<strong>Town/strong> <%= rs("Town") %><br>
<strong>Post Code/strong><%= rs("PostCode") %><br>
<strong>Telephone/strong> <%= rs("Telephone") %>
[/VBS]

then I end up with the first line of the address and two blank lines. How could I avoid that by checking if the fields have content, only then display them?

How Do Find A Empty Field/value/records?

I know it should be very easy but I am new in ASP so I could not figured out.
Here is the simplified version of my code:

thePaymentID= request.querystring("IDValue")

SQLqueryPayment= "SELECT sum(paid) as paid, sum(Interest) as interest
FROM payment WHERE payment_ID =" & thePaymentID & ""

dim rstempPayment
set conntemp=server.createobject("adodb.connection")
conntemp.Open "DSN=payment"

set rstempPayment=conntemp.execute(SQLqueryPayment)

fldValPaid = rstempOwner.Fields("paid").Value
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I need to find out if "fldValPaid" hold anything. I will use it an IF ELSE statement. In payment table a particular record could exist or not. How do I find out by evaluating "fldValPaid" if any record exists or not. I have to find out using "fldValPaid" ...I can not use number of record/record return or any other method.

Displaying Information Based Off An Empty Field

I've been searching for an answer to this for quite some time now and have found nothing, so maybe (hopefully) someone out there will be able to help me.

At my work, we have a lot of folders for different jobs we've done. And right now, we have more than one person making the folders for all the new jobs that we get. I am trying to make a database were it will only show the jobs that have not had folders made. In order to do this, I've created a field titled "Initials". I want the webpage to pull up all the records where the Initials field is empty, but I'm having trouble doing that. I've tried a few different things and have found no success.

I'm not having a problem accesses the database or updating it, just displaying the right information. I'll give a little illustration (because I'm never good with words):

Say I have 3 jobs: Job #1, Job #2, and Job #3. Someone has already made job folders for Job #1, but Job #2 and Job #3 still need to be made. Since Job #1 has been made, that means there are initials in the initials field of the database and thus, I do not want that Job being displayed on the "To Be Made" page. Job #2 and Job #3 do not have initials in the initials field and as such, I want to display those jobs....

ASP/Mysql Empty Text Field Query Error

This has to be an ASP problem when retrieving data from the database. I've change the Field for Message to "varchar(252)" vice "text" in the database and stoped giving me error. But I still need to use the type "text" in the database since my "Message" will be longer then 252 caracter. Code:

How To Stop User From Booking When The Database Is Empty.

I am writing a small ASP booking engine which allows users to book a ticket provided the num_tickets field in my db table is > 0. Each booking causes the num_tickets field to be decremented. So if a user tries to book when there are no tickets left he gets an appropriate error message. However, if a user books the last remaining ticket and the num_tickets field is set to 0, he can simply hit the "back" button and book again (which decrements num_tickets to -1 and so on). Is there a way I can make the page refresh or expire to stop this from happening? is it a sessions problem?

Determining Client's Time Zone

I am attempting to solve a date/time formatting issue is
VBScript ASP pages. The ASP pages needs to determine what

The COM object then reads information from a proprietary

zone and returns the information to the ASP in an XML
form.

My question is how do I determine the client's time Zone

Determining Active Dates For Queued Items?

I have a limited number of ad slots on my website, let's say there are
5. I have lots of people wanting to advertise in those slots, let's
say there are 100. They each join the queue for an ad slot on a first-
come, first-served basis.

I have been trying to find a way to
determine the active date for a queued item. For the first five items
in the queue it's easy, it's just the expiry date of the item in a
live slot that expires first. For the next five queued items it's
still easy, because it's just the expiry date of the item in the queue
that will expire first.

HOWEVER, after that it becomes more complex,
because the queued items will continually be slotting into live slots
as live items expire. So my question is, is there a straightforward
way, in ASP, of determining the active date for a queued item in a
queue of arbitrary size?

Access Database Field Name

I have an access database with year designations for field names, such 2005 2004 2003 ... and data corresponding thereto. I can formulate a query in MSAccess and it works just fine. However, I am trying to create a web page that will create a database
connection and use SQL to create a recordset(s) which I can then manipulate in vbScript.

The problem seems to be structuring a query that will work in
vbScript. I have tried several combinations:

rs2.Open "SELECT 2005,2004,2003 FROM Table", conn, adOpenStatic, adLockOptimistic
rs2.Open "SELECT '2005','2004','2003' FROM Table", conn, adOpenStatic, adLockOptimistic
rs2.Open "SELECT "2005","2004","2003" FROM Table", conn, adOpenStatic, adLockOptimistic

but none of these will extract data.

I have also tried casting these numbers to strings in a string variable, but still no success.

Is there some naming convention I am violating by simply using year designations as field names or is there a problem with vbScript?

Database Field Types

I pass a table name into my program dynamically. I could display the data by looping through the object.Fields for both the field name and the field data using object.GetRows.
What I have not figured out is if there is a way to figure out from the Fields what type of field (ie. Numeric, Text) it is.
Certainly I could check the actual data once it is read, but is there a way to figure out the field type without doing that? Perhaps an object property of a recordset that I am not familiar with?

Checking A Database Field

I have a form that inserts a student's course choices into an Access db. The student can choose from 4 options in a day. From a drop down box that is populated from the db.
Each course has a field called count1, count2, count3 and count4 which are the class sizes for those sessions. When they choose a session, I have a bit of ASP that takes '1' away from the count.

However, I need to validate the form when it is submitted so that if course = 0 a message pops up to say the course in that session is full. At the moment, the drop down boxes are populated by SQL that says only show if count>0 but if a lot of students load the page at the same time they can all subscribe to it - so I am getting -4 in some sessions. I need to check whether the course in that option is full i.e. '0' when the form is validated and then for it to tell them that that particular session is full.
