Different User Session Timeouts
I want to have different user sessions timeout at different time intervals. How can we make this possible in ASP with and without using database tables.

View RepliesI have a couple of pre-built ASP scripts running on my site. One is a mailing list application and the other is subscription/user management app. The two aren't related - they were programmed by different people and use separate dbs.
I have a problem where the user has to hit the login button twice in order to succesfully login. On the mailing list app, as soon as I try to login the first time, I get an error that says "Your session has timed out".
Then once I re-login, everything is fine. The subscription app has the same problem in addition to timimg out very quickly if the user is inactive for even a couple minutes.
Do you think this is a problem with the way the web server is setup for session timeouts, or is there some code in each of these ASP scripts that need to be fixed?
is it possiable to have for example 2 sessions and that one of them will have 40 min timeout and the other session 60 min?

Originally I got a timeout error saying to increase the time using Server.ScriptTimeout so I put Server.ScriptTimeout = "900" at the top of my script. This didn't seem to help. Now I got this error: a.. Error Type:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)

This time it didn't mention what type of timeout I'm experiencing, at least, not that I can see. Code:
In our project, we have a situation where the administrator needs to 'force log off' a particular user under certain conditions. In other words, the admin user needs to have the ability to kill any other user's session.
Is this possible? By using the session properties, we can kill the current session (the current user's session) but is it possible (for the admin user) to kill some other user's session?
i have created a script that queries a database for a username and password, and if they are valid sets a session variable to TRUE and redirects to another page. the table which contains the user information is called "Users" with the fields "UID", "PWD", "FIRSTNAME", "LASTNAME", and "EMAIL". my question is, how can i set a session variable to use the FIRSTNAME record for the particular user that logs on? my code is below. I've already got a session variable to display the UID record in the BookingSysV1UserName session variable.
View Replies View RelatedWhat's the best way to inform a user if their session has expired? It seems like upon logging into the system, when the first variables are created I could create a session variable that just stores a number, and then at the top of every page check to see if that variable is empty or not, but I'm not sure. What's the best way to do this? And if that is the best way, do I just compare it to a string of ""? or null?
View Replies View RelatedI am looking for a good sample or if anyone can provide me a code that would allow a user to upload documents, and be able to get only the ones he/she has uploaded only (by their loging session).
However, I would also need the code to have an administrator look at all the users uploads. I think I can manage to create the file for the administrator. But I have no idea how to start the uploading one.
I've got an application which uses the Dreamweaver login script - which basically stores a username into a session variable if you login successfully. Then the other pages check the session variable to see if you're logged in. The problem is: I'm finding that a lot of users cannot log in because they can't access the session variable, or something like that. I suspect that it's due to them disabling cookies on their browser.
Does anyone know of a way to get round this? I know that online banking uses cookies, and they seem to have no trouble with that. Is it because they use SSL, and therefore the browser lets them through? Moving to a SSL space is something I would consider. We can't be sure what other software is on the user's machine either, and I think I may have had trouble with ZoneAlarm in the past too. What's the best way of getting round all this?
Is this a good idea, or do people use different approaches ? Believe there's a 20 minute time period for em which doesn't sound like what l need.

How can I give a user-defined object session scope? From
http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...asp/iiwaobu.htm
I gather that it can be done, but there are no examples. Simply setting
Set Session("tag") = new MyClass
doesn't work.
I am developing an ASP application where the user may spend large amounts of time manipulating data on a worksheet. An amount of time that will certainly exceed the security mandated session timeout intervel of 15 minutes.
So the user pushes save after the session has timed out and is thrown to the user login window -- all according to standards. How can I either detect the timeout before the submit or preserve the user entered data despite the redirect?
We are using ASP.NET on IIS5 to process requests

How can one make choices in the .aspx based on
if a user has or hasn't changed a field? Is it possible
to control the ASP.NET environment by use of
some client side scripting ( ?changes=yes to URL)
or is there a way to tell in .aspx which Label elements
has changed?
Only solution i can think of currently is to query the
DB and then do an field by field comparision. Is that
the best way?
I've been using text files for Tab-Delimited/ADO/ASP sites so that users can
update and display their products lists through my system with relative
ease.
Only problem is that for the last few months or so, this system has been
generating loads of timeouts. ISP has said that I should be looking to
upgrade my system, as it is the mechanics of it that are creaking under the
strain. My queries are:
a) Which REALLY performs better OLEDB DSN-less or ODBC DSN-less?
b) If I convert the system to use 1 Access DB rather than 50-odd
tab-delimited text files will this REALLY perform better in relation to
timeouts?
To give you some idea of the problems, the site can viewed by going to
www.bardwells.co.uk and clicking the Product List link.
I just can't understand it because the pages on the whole are very lean and
zippy (esp. ADSL), but its these exact same Broadband users who seem to have
more trouble with timeouts than dial-up ones.
we have a page, that posts some search results to the server.
however it takes a while to execute and return to the client.
we added a server.timeout = 120 to the asp script. but it still timesout
is there a "USER FRIENDLY" way to redirect the client to another page, pending execution of the server results ???
I'm beta testing a community membership site using ACCESS/asp on IIS5/windows server, shared with other sites. The performance is not consistent - sometimes OK, sometimes very slow and sometimes data access scripts time out (even when timeout set to 5 minutes) - sometimes the server recovers, and others a re-boot is necessary.
Can some one tell me if there are (or where I can find out if there are) performance issues involving 1. shared servers 2. incorrect data access set-up resulting in data access (e.g.concurrency/record locking, etc) problems 3. possible sloppy asp coding resulting un resource-hogging/non release, record locking etc.
I'm new to using session cookies and need just a bit of help. On the introduction page to my project, I'm setting:
<%@ Language=VBScript %>
<%
response.cookies("user")="authenticated"
%>
Then, on subsequent pages, I'm checking for the cookie, and redirecting if it's not there:
<%@ Language=VBScript %>
<%
If NOT request.cookies("user") = "authenticated" Then
response.redirect "http://somepage"
End If
%>
What I need to do is incorporate an ignore element (by user-agent or IP) into where it checks for the cookie. For instance, if a user has an IP of 127.0.0.1, it ignores whether they have the cookie or not and lets them view the page.
The reason I'm doing this is I have a search engine that's crawling the site and it doesn't always go through the front page - therefore, it's getting redirected on most of the pages it sees. So what I'd like to do is have the script see that user-agent or IP, then ignore the cookie requirement.
Is that possible?
I have an ASP page which pulls in, say, 800 records from a table containing ~ 1 million rows (and growing) - I use a command object and this calls a stored procedure, passing 5 parameters to the stored procedure from the querystring.
Now, if I run the stored proc from Query Analyzer, it takes between 25 and 40 seconds.
If I run it from the ASP page, if it takes LESS than 30 secs to generate then I get the output fine, but as soon as the 30 seconds elapse without anything being returned, I get a "Timeout expired" error.
I have taken the following action to eradicate, but all to no avail.
1.) Added Server.ScriptTimeout = 1000 into the page itself
2.) Upped the Script timeout figure in IIS for the application the report is within.
3.) Added a "Connect timeout=1000" line into my connectionstring (I was clutching at straws here...)
None of these alterations made any difference, so i'm a bit miffed.
I have my system set-up, where by when a user accesses the cms, a time stamp is added to the database. So we can keep check of when people accessed the system.
The added benefit of my addition, is that a session timeout is usable based on the inputted timestamp the user logged in. I added this functionaility because the system could be idle for some time and if so set the session to equal nothing or similar.
However what would be a nice feature of the cms is the display of the current user.
Below is code I have inputted to give some idea of what I am doing
Session("ADID") = objRS("adminID")
objConn.Execute("UPDATE tblAdmin SET adminLastLogged=now() WHERE adminID=" & Session("ADID"))
Session.Timeout = 30 ' 30 = Minutes
SO does anyone know how I can retireve the adminUsername based on the session used when loggin into the system.
I have written an ASP.NET 2.0 application that uses Active Directory or ADAM
to manage account users - the site has a page that allows people to create an
account (much like any site). The page populates the AD with all the
information and the user account but I am unable to enable the account.
Microsoft has information on how to do that here -->
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...ting_a_user.asp
(the sample is for Visual Basic) - and I am unable to complete the bottom
portion of the script. Can some one point me in the right direction - or can
you tell me how I can add a snippet of VBscript code to an ASP.NET page.
I am using the Active DS Type library - not sure why there are multiple ones
(System.DirectoryServices) but it is rather confusing - I seem to accomplish
one thing with one and another with the other (they did have trouble
co-existing however). Anyway my script works very well but I am not able to
access the properties required to enable the account.
Here is a simple version (no error checking) of the code.....
how to go about setting up an asp script or flash action script to take the input from a user of his/her username and password then send an email to the user with the information. I am able to do all of this but the problem is that the users pc is the one sending the email. I want the server to send the email instead.

View Replies View RelatedI have a site that I'm trying to migrate to ASP.NET from ASP, and the
foremost stumbling block I'm hitting is session state between the ASP
and ASP.NET applications. In order to access this information, I'm
doing a HttpWebRequest from the ASP.NET side into an .asp page,
passing the session name on the get in order to request it from the
ASP side and write it back to the response stream, giving ASP.NET
access to it. Of course I change sessions each time I make the call
from the ASP.NET side.
Soooooo, I'm thinking to myself, "Self, shouldn't you be able to fake
out the server by getting the session cookie from the initial usage of
the asp, pass that data to the ASP.NET, and use that to send a request
back the ASP side under the appropriate session?"
From a real high level, I enter the site via a .asp page. This page
in turn calls .aspx page from within a frame ......
I want to create an administration page which lists all the current users who are on the site at the moment.
I know coldfusion has this feature built in using the SessionTracker class... does ASP have something similar? If not... is there any way I can just iterate through all the session files on the server...?
I have a site developed using ASP, but each page I enter has a different session id when accessing the site using the domain name of the site. When accessing the site from my network and using the internal IP address, it is OK. Any ideas?

I'm having a real tough time getting a User's NT login after they
submit a form.
I have Anon. Login disabled. I'm using Digest Authentication (although
I've tried everything).
Every time I run the page, I get a blank string instead of the
requested information.
The information is in a hidden field, with the value set to:
<%=Request.ServerVariables("LOGON_USER")%>
The icing on the cake is that when I run this on my PWS, I can pull the
information and it shows up in the SQL DB I'm sending it too. But, when
put on our live box, it doesn't show up. The setting on each box are
exactly the same.
I have a classic ASP program running on a server in the DMZ. I need to consume a web service so that I can consume data from that web service. However I am not able to call the web service from the DMZ since the server can not send messages out on the
internet.
Thus, I need to send the call to another server running within the internal
area of the company's internet. I need to send this message to an IIS server
and then from the IIS server call the web service. I was thinking that I need
to call the service on the IIS server with an ADO.NET connection. This
ADO.NET connection object would be generated just long enough to call the web
service, get a response from the web serice, and return the message to the
server running in the DMZ.
Let me know if you think this would be a good solution and tell me how you
would setup this interface. (Should C#.NET or Visual Basic.NET be used or
some other lanaguge.)
Also after this solution works, I will need to implement this similar type
of solution to call other web services.
does anyone know a way to show a users USER name instead of just there login name
its for a school intranet currently we retrieve a lot of data based on the login name by using this script:
[code] <%=Request.ServerVariables("LOGON_USER")%>
it would be a lot more functional if i could pull the full name, we are using Active Directory 2003 and iis6, and all the logins have the full username inputted in the AD?
It seems that the ASP.NET user in AD has been deleted. How can I get it
back?
