View Replies View RelatedI have a dynamically-generated asp web page which uses Office Web Components
to display an Excel bar chart of the user-selected data. The page works
fine, but the users would like to copy-n-paste the displayed bar chart from
the web page and insert it into an email (MS Outlook) or report (MS Word or
MS PowerPoint).
Is there any way of supporting this copy/paste functionality? When you
right-click on the chart in the displayed web page (viewed with MSIE6), you
are only given the pop-up button [About...] which displays the "About
Microsoft Office Web Components" splash window ("Version 9.0.0.8028 SP-3"
etc.)
Currently, the only work-around is to "Print-Screen", trim using Paint, and
then paste into the destination. This is too tedious and beyond the
capabilities of some of the users.
One of my programmers is using Office Web Components in classic ASP to create, fill and format an Excel spreadsheet. Everything is fine except when he creates Merged cells the performance drops dramatically. He has investigated the 'Center Across Cells' alternative but cannot get it working
using Office Web Comonents.
Has anyone come across this problem or even better has a solution?
I'm trying to call the shell on a shared server using IIS 6.
'I create the shell object as such:
oShell = Server.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
Now, I'm trying nice some simple test scripts like:
oShell.Run "%ComSpec% /c nslookup " & strIPAddress & "" & logfile, 0 , True
but no matter what I do, I can't even get an error message!
First, is there any documentation on using the scripting shell on a server? I've been
googling for the past hour and have found zilch for docs.
Second, what server permissions are required to execute the shell?
I am in need of a 'documenter' application that will analyze and document a .asp website.

Is there not an official API documentation supplied by Microsoft? Something similiar to http://www.php.net/docs.php for PHP or http://java.sun.com/docs/index.html for Java SDK?

I'm presuming that there is a problem with asp as installed but I don't hv clue where to start with this.

I'm trying to use Activer Server Pages (ASP) to display a graph based on user's selection criteria. To achieve this, I would like to use Office Web Components (OWC 9 or 10), a Microsoft ActiveX component. My questions are:
* Can you use it with NT operating systems or Must it be in Windows 2000/XP?
* Do anyone has experience in using it? and if yes, Are they easy and reliable to use?
* Are there any other free components out there?
any decent resources for using the Office Chart components? I've had a look around the MSDN but it's not very comprehensive and doesn't actually have any reference guides. Most resources say to refer to the help file that comes with the package but I can't find any versions of this.

I have generated Bar, Line and Pie charts using the MSOWC.DLL and its fantastic.
The ONLY problem I have encountered is when generating Pie charts it shows the quntities of each piece inside the Pie chart and its very hard to read. But in Excel it shows outside the Pie chart. So, I want to find out a solution for this.
Are there any asp scripts that I can use to allow people to view my powerpoint, excel, and word files over the internet without having to download then? The must run from the server.

How easy is it to access the metadata from office files and PDF's? That is, Author, Title, Keywords, Comments etc...
I want to be able to scan a directory and provide links with descriptions (ie Comments field) for each file within. I can use automation to open and read the office files, but I imagine this would produce too big a load on the webserver. Is there a simple and slick way of doing this?
Since I updated Office 2000 to SP3, my ASP code has failed when executing this function:
(the HPageBreaks.Add line fails)
function insertPageBreak ( xlsObject, strLocation )
with xlsObject
.Range( strLocation ).Select
.ActiveWindow.SelectedSheets.HPageBreaks.Add .Range( strLocation )
end with
end function
Parameters:
xlsObject is a valid object of excel created with:
Set xls = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
strLocation is a string in the form "Axx" where xx is the current row number, e.g. "A54"
I had to uninstall and reinstall Office 2000 without service pack 3 in order for it to work....
I'm having difficulty getting winword.exe processes to die on our
development server when using
SET objWord = CreateObject("word.application") from an .ASP page.
This problem exists on our development server only as we are still
using Office 2000 components in production. No probs in production with
the current code which has been in use for a couple of years now.
I have to get these ASP pages working with word 2003 to avoid a rewrite
of a few applications.
I've tried using objWord.Quit and setting the object to "Nothing" but
it has no effect on the running process on the server.
Both development and prod servers are Win 2003 Server.
I am working on getting through the book Teach Yourselve Active Server Pages in 24 Hours.
Now, I am not learning ASP.Net, but ASP. Why, because, I am getting a lot of calls for asp, but not many for .Net. And I just don't know enough as I'd lilke.
At any rate. I have gotten to the section on Working with components. for example the MSWC.NextLink
I don't have it. I am running IIS 5.1 because I am on a Windows XP machine. And I am told I need a SDK download, but which one? Everywhere I look, its IIS 6, but that doesn't work on my machine. So, how do I get these components so I can run them.
After working for so many yrs in ASP and COM I still feel novice. I have asp
page nd a COM component (.exe) which is written in VB. For some fixure, I
have to remove my IIS and reinstall it. My ASP page is not instantiating my
component. Whereas, components which are dlls working frin in ASP pages....I
checked permissions on DCOMCNFG, file directory, folder, file.
Any clues what is missing.
Error Type:
Server object, ASP 0178 (0x80070005)
The call to Server.CreateObject failed while checking permissions. Access is
denied to this object.
/testcomponent.asp, line 2
line2 is just a createObject for my .exe com component.
I am new to using components in ASP, whilst I can see the huge benefit of using them, the big problem that I am coming up against is that my host won't let me register them on the server.
My question is simply this: is the only way around this problem to setup your own server (which is probably beyond my technical ability) or are there lenient hosting companies out there that will let you install components freely (obviously subject to their approval)?
I dont know if there exists a directory of components somewhere which have been approved by hosting companies as safe to use on servers? Im a little confused as to how I can take advantage of components if I can't physically install them. Is it possible to use a component removely without having to install it on the server?
Sorry, I know I have asked a lot of questions but I am really in the dark here and not quite sure what my options are.
I need to convert a dynamic (ASP) page on my site to a PDF, so I am looking for a PDF component which can open the page from a URL. Failing that it would need to open an HTML file from disk and convert.
I've been searching and there are hundreds with rather random pricing and different feature sets.
Can anyone recommend a component for this job which doesn't cost a fortune?
How can I make components to my asp code in VB or other VS 6. Nedd to know all the steps, because never make any activeX component. Nedd also to know how to call the dll file as well to receive and pass arguments to it.
View Replies View RelatedI am trying to use a component to execute a file but I'm not exactly sure how to
could some one please provide a little bit of sample code showing me how to
use a simple component?
I've just been reviewing a COM component (VB6) that I wrote a while ago to
record when and where 404 errors occur; each error is logged in a DB along
with supporting information.
Looking at it now, I'm wondering why I chose a COM component rather than
just an ASP page. There is not that much code involved, so I could easily
have expanded the ASP page that calls the DLL to do the whole job....
COM Component:
Generally perform faster than an ASP page, but there is an overhead
associated with creating a new object in the calling ASP page, so more
suited to more intense apps that dont require user-interaction. Also keeps
code private of course.
ASP:
Keeping you code in an ASP page is often more efficient for smaller jobs,
where the cost of creating a COM object outweighs the potential performance
gain. Also prefered for tasks that require frequent user interaction. Code
remains public (to those who have access to server).
This is what prompted my question: At what point, does it become worthwhile
to go for a COM component as opposed to an ASP page? Is there that much
difference in it?
Are perceptions of the issues fairly accurate?
I've updated the DLL in question - it was a bit of a ball ache: modify code
& compile, reset IIS, then copy DLL to server and re-register. I know my DLL
in this example doesnt do much, and I'm certain that modifying and copying
ASP pages would be simple & efficient, but at what point does it pay to use
a DLL?
