Db Driven Site Architecture

when doing a dynamic site such as this, how does one handle the articles? is the whole article dropped into the db? or does it sit somewhere else and the db just references it?

i'm going to convert a large static site over to asp this summer and am starting to plan the architecture and i haven't really been able to find the answer.

Securing A Database Driven Site

Firstly, apologies if this is the wrong section!

Ive created a site using ASP and an Access database. At the moment the database is unprotected, and I haven't used any usernames or passwords to access the database.
Now that development of the core site is almost complete, i want to secure the database.

Need Architecture

What I need to have is something like a "news site" whereby only the "X" most recent articles are displayed. I have thought of a number of ways to do this, but I don't know what is the "right way."

1) I can create a recordset for each article with value defined by a system value

2) I can create a query in Access that only has the "X" most recent articles in it and display each individually.

3) I can have a recordset of the whole set of articles and select the most recent. (based on date/time field)I'm sure there are other ways too.

How would you real programmers do this?

Service Provider Architecture

We're developing a hosted application that will be used by hundreds of
client companies, each with its own database. Our first release of this
product separated each customer into its own virtual directory with a copy of
the code (classic ASP/IIS 5). We want to design the next version so that
there is one virtual directory, one common copy of the code.
are we losing any application isolation by doing this?
Under IIS5 by separating each customer into a virtual dir, we created a
separate "application" that could be pooled or isolated. Under IIS 6, do we
have to do the same thing or is there a way to break a single "site" into
multiple application pools. It seems that the default is to have an
application pool per site.

Template Driven Web

My client has 35 domains (web addresses) that they want to host on a Windows 2K box with IIS 5. They want one application built using ASP and SQL server, hosted somehow on the IIS so that it appears as the same application for each domain. The end user of each domain will actually be using the same application. The head of each of the 35 domain, or the jr. web master of each domain should be able to cutomize the look of the each of their domain. This customization feature would be built into the ASP application. Things that can be changed would be some text, color of text, size and color of input boxes.
This application will be similar to some of the eCommerce sites that have a web interface for their merchants to be able to modify their individual sites. Sort of selecting and modifying templates. They want 1 application so any changes and update of the application will reflect on all domains. My question is how do I start designing this?
Where can I get info on this project, any opensource stuff I can look at?
Do I incorporate XML anywhere? The domains will be accessing the same DB, how do I minimize DB trips?

Database Driven Image Gallery

what i want to do is create an image gallery, that when u click on a picture it opens in a pop up with the images caption and name there also. I've stored the captions and image names in a database - images.mdb table - Images

I just need a page now that sorts it all out to display the correct image, caption and title in the pop up. The images are stored in folder images and the database in the website root directory.

i've read a couple of articles on various websites, and played with the image gallery wizard on Frontpage but the websites dont explain my problem, and i cant adapt the gallery on frontpage. I'm a bit of a novice in ASP so I would really appreciate it if you could some how make the bits of the script I need to change standout.

They would like the display to start with the current month, list to the end of the year then start the beginning of the year and list up to the current month. How does one retrieve data based on date? I guess I'd like something like :

month] ORDER BY Date

Then :

SELECT * FROM EVENTS WHERE [month is less than the current month] ORDER BY
Date

What is the syntax for the month bits between the []?

Database Driven Programming Model

I always heard the term "data/database driven programming" model in ASP database, SQL programming, and web programming circles. But I don't quite sure what does it mean? Does it mean the web software's responds are based on data request from the user? Just like in Windows, we call it "event-driven programming" model because the windows program's responds based on user's responses? That's why we call "data driven programming" ?

ASP Plugin/Template Driven Portal Project

I'm currently in the middle of the most advanced ASP project I have ever worked on, and was wondering if I can get any feedback on what anyone thinks about it so far (or suggestions for improvement later, etc.)

Basically, it will be a single core set of ASP files, that will allow anyone to set up a webpage in minutes by simply selecting a pre-developed site template, and pre-developed site plugins (a plug-in being anything from a menu, to a CC processing tool, etc.), so that user's can simply "manage" their site look/use rather than program everything over and over again. In the end there will even be an import to instantly convert any existing site.

Developers can build templates and plug-ins at will, and will be interchangeable on the site with the click of a link or button.

This project is planned to be open source but is still months away from completion, but to check out a sample of how it basically will work, we are currently testing it at URL.

Creating A Database Driven Breadcrumb Trail

I want to create a breadcrumb trail on a site, but instead of being
generated by cookies or a directory structure, it needs to be database
driven. My website details hundreds of products, each belonging to a
category. Each category can belong to a parent category, and so on.

My site will feature master/detail pages, and both need to feature a
trail, e.g.

Books > Hobbies > Sport > Football

The master page will list all items within the current category, and the
trail will allow the user to click to any parent category for a wider
listing.

The detail page will show the item detail, along with a full trail to
the category/parent categories it belongs to.

The category structure will grow over time, and different branches will
have different number of levels so it needs to be maintainable.

Building An ASP Site Using Dreamweaver - Can Html Site Be On ASP Server?

I am to build a site onto an ASP server. Anyone here used Dreamweaver and is it just a simple matter of opening up a new ASP page in Dreamweaver and build the site like you would normally do with a HTML page and it will handle the ASP coding accordingly and you can just simply upload it onto an ASP server and it will work?

The site I am to build is basically just a standard html website, but my friend wants me to build it for an ASP server so he has asked me to make sure it is an asp site so I am presuming with the extension .asp

If I build it as a html site to begin with, will converting it to asp be hard. Could I just export my pages into asp or is there more to it?

Can a Html website be loaded and working on an asp server or host?

Is it possible to have a site mixed both html and asp, eg. the home page is html and when you click on shopping cart on the home page it goes to a hopping cart page thats .asp or do they all have to have the same extension.

"image" Of A Db Driven Page

Is there a way to have an asp page displayed with all the data from a db but not truly getting the data from the data base.

I want to perform updates to the data base and not have them "publish" untill I say go. I figured one way to do this is to have two tables (one live and the other pre-production) of the page and just copy the preproduction table the live table when ready. But, I read in some search engine optimization artcle that there is a way to basically have a pure html version of an asp db driven page so the search bots do not ignore it. Does anyone know of something like this?
