Request.cookies Error

i need 2 check the cooky in another page if itis exist the page reads its value and if not it redirect the browser to another page

i tried 2 use this but failed :

fname=Request.Cookies("user")
if fname="" then
response.redirect "add.asp"
else
response.write("welcome " & fname)
end if
===================================
and when i write

fname=Request.Cookies("user")
response.write("welcome " & fname)

to just read the cooky it works good but when using if to redirect the page do not responde
