I'm currently learning Java and have been set an assignment that requires me to do the following:
Write an application that reads in a line length followed by individual lines containing text. No input line will be longer than the read in line length. In the text lines each word will be separated by a single space. The lines of text to be reformatted and then output so that the output lines of text have straight left and right margins. The last printing character in each line will be at character position (line length). In the text output the character '.' is to be used to represent the space character.

I'm trying to take this task on, but I'm unsure as to what exactly I'm supposed to do with part of it. For one of the methods I need to "work out how many extra spaces will need to be added to make the line width characters long.", how would I go about doing this?

In Oracle SQL, when you do trim(column_name), if column_name is blank spaces only (say datatype is CHAR(8)), then "trim(column_name) is null" is true.
In JPQL, if you do "TRIM ( BOTH FROM p.column_name ) is null", does it evaluate to true just like in Oracle SQL?
The reason I'm asking, is my colleague wrote some code in JPQL like below:
... TRIM ( BOTH FROM CONCAT(p.column_name, '#@') ) = '#@'
He said he originally wanted to compare the TRIM result to empty String '', but the result is false, so he concat the column to some junk.
So if after the TRIM, the result is the same junk he added, then the column contains only blanks. I think this works but there could a simpler way to do it.
I am writing a program for my college class that does the following:
Reads a text file that consists of words from a-z. The content read from the file is displayed in the JTextArea, while the user can filter the search results based on what they input. For example, if the user enter's "a" then the JTextArea is updated with all words that start with the letter "a" only. Also the user can enter a substring or the whole word and the respective result will be only the words that match the user's input.
The Problem and question I have is what would be the best way to go about filtering a file of about 27,000 words based on user input. I tried using an arraylist but the problem is it took forever to update the JTextArea, which is not good. Also I am new to using JSwing so I may not be aware of a component that would make this easier.

I was wondering if it's possible to do this: I want to build a java program that reads a java array from a text file.
Then I want to read it, and output it in a different format.
The reading and out is easy - as text.
But how can I incorporate the read text in to a java valid array in my program, which I can use?
Is this even possible?
My method below works fine to print a matrix but when it prints every row, it is printing extra 4 white spaces which is not required. How can I delete those extra spaces at the end? when I use

It trims every thing including the spaces I needed for my matrix. So where should I put replaceAll("^s+", "") ?

So I am currently writing my first assignment and have run into problems with my coding. The task was to have someone enter a 5 digit number and in return, I list each number on their respective lines. We also must create an error if a number other than 5 digits was entered. My problem is that when they enter a 1 or 2,3,4,6,7,8 digit number.. the error message occurs along with the rest of the messages (listing the numbers, etc). I want the program to end (or even re-ask to enter the numbers) if they incorrectly enter the data.

Instead of just giving spaces by counting the number of charaters in the line, is there any other way to align them.

I have a program that reads lines of text, but some of the lines of text aren't applicable and break the program. I'd like to put a letter in front of the lines in the .txt file I want to use, such as a #.

I have to create a program that calculates the nth Fibonacci number and returns that to the user. Fibonacci said his number sequence would describe the ideal breeding patterns of immortal rabbits. So, you are going to make this vision a reality.
First, take in a numeric value from the user and calculate that value in the fibonacci series. Next, find an image of a rabbit and display the image on a GUI (put the image as an icon on a label!) the number of times returned by the algorithm (Put all the aforementioned labels on one panel with FlowLayout!).

I am writing to a file coordinates of texts using PathIterator (Java Platform SE 7 ) saved as SVG format i defined the Font attributes using AttributedString (Java Platform SE 7 ) and TextLayout (Java Platform SE 8 ). I'm building a text based "game" where you are communicating with this android creature called Gargoid , at a VERY primitive level . how it works is, simply the user type in a sentence which is decoded for meaning by comparing it with a built in list of words in order to figure out what the user is saying, and then reply with a a relevant response also from a list of built in words. the whole thing would look something like this,

String[] for user typed in words used for comparison to find meaning ..An Array of String[] , 7 so far, to hold what I call the Gargoid dictionary for example String[] greeting={hi,hello,aloha}, words that indicates greeting int[] called frequency to determine which of the 7 arrays have the greatest "relevancy" to what is being said. and finally another String[] for responses here's the actual code, I want you guys to tell me if there's a way to reduce all this never ending number of arrays? and also is this code a good application of object oriented programming?
