Converting Double Value To A 2 Decimal Place Value
Jan 28, 2015
I am trying to convert the double grossPay to 2 decimal places but cannot get it to work ,I am unsure of the correct way of doing this but this is how far I can get
public static double grossPay(double Orate, double overtime, double salary) {
double grosspay = 0;
grosspay = (Orate * overtime) + (salary / 26);
DecimalFormat df = new DecimalFormat("#.##");
return(df.format(grosspay));
}//closes grossPay method

I'm not sure why, but whenever I try to get a value out of a double, it only extends to one decimal place. For instance, (825 / 805) would become 1.0000 (after being run through a DecimalFormat object) instead of 1.0248 like I need it to be (and should be if what I know about primitive variable types is right). Why is the double variable type not giving me the precision I want and, more importantly, how do I fix this?

I am currently trying to solve a programming problem on this site, and the problem includes working on a 100 digits of decimal places of a certain irrational number. I tried using BigDecimal class but it displays, correctly me if I am wrong, just 20+ decimal digits. Is there other way to do this?

I am looking to find a way to display the number of decimal places without using any type of formatting string.
Only to make it xxx.x instead of xxx.xxxxxx.

I'm having trouble formatting my output and issues with the decimal places. Here's my code:
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.text.DecimalFormat; // Imports DecimalFormat class for one way to round
public class lab3 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
String heading1 = "Hour", heading2 = "Distance Traveled";
int timeElapsed, hour, speed;
[Code] ....
And here's my output (Click on the image since it's pretty small):
javaIssues.png
Issue:
1) The Hours 2 and 3 aren't aligned to 1.
2) The 80 and 120 in Distance Traveled have 6 decimal places when it should not have decimals.

Ex. If I type 5943, the program will say
mill = 5
hun = 9
ten = 4
uni = 3
get the picture I had to translate the decimal value names from a different language.
This is what I have tried...,
Java Code:
import java.util.Scanner;//Permite el uso de leer el teclado del usuario
public class DeterminarValorDecimal//Nombra el documento
{
public static void main(String [] args)//Podemos ver la clase
{
[Code].....
But what this does is I have to enter the single digits one by one. I want to be able to type the whole number. Is there a method that reads the length of the whole number and lets me classify each digit so I can do what I want to do?

I'm trying to complete a code to convert decimal to octal. however i can't figure out how to print the output correctly. it should be.. Your integer number 160000 is 0470400 in octal. (160000 is the number you input). My code is...
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
int value;
int a;
int b;
int c;
int d;
int e;
int f;
int g;
String result;
[Code] .....
Lastly, my output prints everything correctly, but the input number always is 0.
Ex error: input= 160000
Your integer number 0 is 0470400 in octal.
it should be.. Your integer number 160000 is 0470400 in octal.

I'm having extreme difficulty in working with a Vector storing a column with a BigDecimal value, and converting that single value into a float. I'm not sure why the code was written this way, but basically, I'm working with something called a vector that has a single Big Decimal value/column (not sure what the correct terminology is), and I want to store that value in a float variable called "dp". However, I don't know how to convert from the Big Decimal to a float.
Code is below:
String s = "";
sql = "SELECT DiscountPercentRate FROM Attendees WHERE AttendeeId=" + attendeeId;
Vector v2 = sqldb.getResults(sql); /*I know that sqldb.getResults(sql) returns a vector with a single BigDecimal column of 15.0, in the test example I'm using*/
if (!v2.isEmpty()) {
Vector data2 = (Vector)v2.elementAt(0);
if (!data2.isEmpty())
[Code] .....
In case you're wondering what the sqldb.getResults() method looks, like, here's a snippet of it - There's an else statement that triggers in my case, adding a BigDecimal column to a vector, and returns that vector.
Vector v = new Vector();
...
else {
BigDecimal bd = rs.getBigDecimal(i);
vCols.add(bd);
}
v.add(vCols);
...
return v;
How can I take the single result of my SQL query in that Vector/Big Decimal thing, and turn that result into a float value?

I am trying to cast an integer into a double. it works but I need two decimal number after the dot and for example I can print 7.51 but how can I get it to print 7.50 and not 7.5
public int compareTo(Money o){
int d1 = (this.dollars * 100) + this.cents;
int d2 = (o.dollars * 100) + o.cents;
return d1 - d2;
}
On my main method I have
public static void main(String[] args){
Money money1 = new Money(10, 49);
Money money2 = new Money(2, 99);
System.out.println("result: " + "$" + (double)money1.compareTo(money2)/100);
}
It prints 7.5 but I want it to print 7.50, how do I do this .....

public static void main(String[] args) {
String hexString = ""; //output a hex string
int decNumber;//decimal number to be converted
int storeInput; //copy f input decimal number

I am trying to figure out how to convert from decimal to hexadecimal without using the java library function. This is just a guess. I could be wrong.

I am supposed to write a program on PuTTY using UNIX (I have Windows 8), but I am not comfortable with it yet, so I am using Java through NetBeans (IDE 7.4).
The program has to follow these instructions (ignore the Linux part of the instructions, the rest is in bold):
Write a program on the Linux system using the putty utility. The program should get strings of data from the command line (that is, look for the data in the "args" array of strings). Use a loop to convert each of the strings in the array into a double and add the number to a total. Print the total after all of the strings have been processed.
The program will use try-catch to catch any error that occurs. If an error occurs, the program will print a message saying that the error occurred. The program can end at that point.
You should create the Java program using the nano editor. The input data should be a list of numbers on the line that runs the program.
The problem so far is that I keep getting an error when converting a String value into a new double value. I have yet to code the try-catch method in my program
Java Code:
import java.util.*;
public class Program13Strings {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner scan = new Scanner (System.in);
System.out.println("How many lines of data do you wish to enter?");
int size = scan.nextInt();
[Code] ....
*NOTE: right where my code says double newDouble = Double.valueOf(newResponse); is where the error is occurring.
*ERROR: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "abc"
at sun.misc.FloatingDecimal.readJavaFormatString(Floa tingDecimal.java:1241)
at java.lang.Double.valueOf(Double.java:504)
at program13strings.Program13Strings.main(Program13St rings.java:21)
Java Result: 1
How can this be fixed so I don't get this error?

for (int i = 0; i < letters.length; i++) {
double relativeFreq = (onesAverage()/letters[i]);
char a = characters.charAt(i);
double j = score[i];
System.out.printf();//ToDo
Above is my current code. Basically- There is a string called characters of length 26 (1 char for each letter in alphabet), a double relativeFrequency value which does a calculation and the end result is a number with lots of decimal numbers. The score array has set double values within the array.
What I want to do is create a print f statement where I print out each of the values I initialized above WITH specific amounts of spaces in between. So it should be in this order:
a (spaces) j (spaces) relativeFreq (newLine).
Between J and relativeFreq there should be 4 spaces, however if the value in relativeFreq is greater than 10 (it won't be greater than 100)- then there should be 3 spaces. Everytime I try to create a printf statement my code ends up crooked for some of the values.
for (int i = 0; i < letters.length; i++) {
double relativeFreq = (onesAverage()/letters[i]);
char a = characters.charAt(i);
double j = score[i];
System.out.printf("%c %.4s %.4s%n",a, j, relativeFreq);

I am new to programming, but am working on a program that takes 6 inputted grade averages on a scale of 0.0 - 100.0 (exceptions in the case someone has exceeded the traditional 100.0 limit) and then divides it by 6 and returns the value in a dialog box. However, I want to take the values inputted and convert them to a 4.0 scale (90.0-100.0 = 4.0, 80.0-89.99 = 3.0, etc.) and then get the average of that so that I can return an average on a 4.0 scale. I have been trying to accomplish. Also, as of right now my program only prompts the user for 6 inputs, but I'd like the user to be able to input as many as he/she would like to, I am pasting the code I currently have below.
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
public class GPA_Calculation1_0 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
String courseOne = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter numeric GPA of Course One: ");//Course one
double numOne = Double.parseDouble(courseOne);

how to use Java and for my coursework I have been asked to construct an application that will read in the exam mark and coursework mark and then print out to 1 decimal place the average of the coursework and exam mark. When I submit it to the coursework submission system it says it's incorrect.
The answer that it's asking for is the answer that my code produces (ex = 71 cw = 40 mark = 55.5) But for some reason it says this when I submit it:
-#### << Differences between expected (<) your answer (>) >> ------------
1c1
< ex= 91 cw = 80 mark = 85.5
---
> ex = 71 cw = 40 mark = 55.5
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Check the above output for why this attempt failed And when I change the ex to 91 and cw to 80 it asks for > ex = 71 cw = 40 mark = 55.5 again.
class Main
{
public static void main( String args[] ) {
int ExamMark=71;
int CourseworkMark=40;
double cost = (double)(ExamMark + CourseworkMark) / 2;
System.out.printf("ex = " + ExamMark + " cw = " + CourseworkMark + " mark = " + cost);
System.out.println();
}
}

I'm using eclipse. I'm going to get straight to the point and give all the info I can, if the values in the first code box are used, shouldn't these values be left after all in the second box is done:
remainder=23, arr[0]=100, div=23/10=2.3, whole=2, and decimal=3?
When I use this code, div comes out to be just (2.0).
Java Code:
int leng=10;
arr[0]=123; //int
arr[1]=100; //int mh_sh_highlight_all('java'); Java Code: if (arr[0]!=arr[1]){
int remainder=arr[0]-arr[1];
arr[0]=arr[0]-remainder;
double div=remainder/leng; //double div=Double.valueOf(remainder/leng);
int whole=(int) Math.floor(div);
int decimal=(int) ((div-whole)*leng); mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
I'm not sure were I'm going wrong in how div is being calculated, but I ultimately need div to be 2.3.
I've also used the second option commented out which still gives (2.0).

I have two questions:
1. I read somewhere that instead of looping through every player (below), you use could Events to do it for you:
for (Player player : this.getPlayers()) {
if (player.getLocation().getX() == 10) {
}
}
I'm not sure as to how to use Events in place of a for loop. I've been thinking on this for days, but I'm still stuck. Any example of using an Event instead of a for loop?
2. Is there any way to accept multiple connections on a server without using a while loop? Maybe use Events to handle the acceptance of connections?
