Converting Double Values (0.0-110.0) To A 4.0 Scale (as Used In GPA Calculation)

Sep 3, 2014

I am new to programming, but am working on a program that takes 6 inputted grade averages on a scale of 0.0 - 100.0 (exceptions in the case someone has exceeded the traditional 100.0 limit) and then divides it by 6 and returns the value in a dialog box. However, I want to take the values inputted and convert them to a 4.0 scale (90.0-100.0 = 4.0, 80.0-89.99 = 3.0, etc.) and then get the average of that so that I can return an average on a 4.0 scale. I have been trying to accomplish. Also, as of right now my program only prompts the user for 6 inputs, but I'd like the user to be able to input as many as he/she would like to, I am pasting the code I currently have below.

import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
public class GPA_Calculation1_0 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
String courseOne = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter numeric GPA of Course One: ");//Course one
double numOne = Double.parseDouble(courseOne);

[Code] ....

String To A Double In Scanner - Performing Calculation?

Apr 23, 2015

This may be a multipart question. Basically I have to write a program that accepts a string, converts it to a double splits it and then performs a calculation.

public static void main(String[] args) {
String input = ""; // initalize the string
boolean isOn = true; // used for the while loop...when false, the program will exit.
String exitCommand = "Exit"; // exit command
String[] token = input.split(("(?<=[-+*/])|(?=[-+*/])"));

[Code] ....

This is the error I get:

Enter a math problemException in thread "main" java.lang.NumberFormatException: empty String
at sun.misc.FloatingDecimal.readJavaFormatString(Floa tingDecimal.java:1842)
at sun.misc.FloatingDecimal.parseDouble(FloatingDecim al.java:110)
at java.lang.Double.parseDouble(Double.java:538)
at Calculator.main(Calculator.java:22)

[Code] .....

How do I go about actually fixing it. Without that line commented out I get this:

Enter a math problem
2+2 <-What I entered
[Ljava.lang.String;@135fbaa4

Also, how would I go about using the submethods to check for valid operands and operators (also part of the problem) I have the actual lists made obviously, but am unsure how to get those to work with the problem.

Double RelativeFrequency Value Which Does Calculation / End Result Is Number With Lots Of Decimal Numbers

Nov 24, 2014

for (int i = 0; i < letters.length; i++) {
double relativeFreq = (onesAverage()/letters[i]);
char a = characters.charAt(i);
double j = score[i];
System.out.printf();//ToDo

Above is my current code. Basically- There is a string called characters of length 26 (1 char for each letter in alphabet), a double relativeFrequency value which does a calculation and the end result is a number with lots of decimal numbers. The score array has set double values within the array.

What I want to do is create a print f statement where I print out each of the values I initialized above WITH specific amounts of spaces in between. So it should be in this order:

a (spaces) j (spaces) relativeFreq (newLine).

Between J and relativeFreq there should be 4 spaces, however if the value in relativeFreq is greater than 10 (it won't be greater than 100)- then there should be 3 spaces. Everytime I try to create a printf statement my code ends up crooked for some of the values.

for (int i = 0; i < letters.length; i++) {
double relativeFreq = (onesAverage()/letters[i]);
char a = characters.charAt(i);
double j = score[i];
System.out.printf("%c %.4s %.4s%n",a, j, relativeFreq);

Converting String Input To Double

May 2, 2014

I am supposed to write a program on PuTTY using UNIX (I have Windows 8), but I am not comfortable with it yet, so I am using Java through NetBeans (IDE 7.4).

The program has to follow these instructions (ignore the Linux part of the instructions, the rest is in bold):

Write a program on the Linux system using the putty utility. The program should get strings of data from the command line (that is, look for the data in the "args" array of strings). Use a loop to convert each of the strings in the array into a double and add the number to a total. Print the total after all of the strings have been processed.

The program will use try-catch to catch any error that occurs. If an error occurs, the program will print a message saying that the error occurred. The program can end at that point.

You should create the Java program using the nano editor. The input data should be a list of numbers on the line that runs the program.

The problem so far is that I keep getting an error when converting a String value into a new double value. I have yet to code the try-catch method in my program

Java Code:

import java.util.*;
public class Program13Strings {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner scan = new Scanner (System.in);
System.out.println("How many lines of data do you wish to enter?");
int size = scan.nextInt();

[Code] ....

*NOTE: right where my code says double newDouble = Double.valueOf(newResponse); is where the error is occurring.

*ERROR: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "abc"

at sun.misc.FloatingDecimal.readJavaFormatString(Floa tingDecimal.java:1241)
at java.lang.Double.valueOf(Double.java:504)
at program13strings.Program13Strings.main(Program13St rings.java:21)

Java Result: 1

How can this be fixed so I don't get this error?

Calculating Average Of Two Ints And Converting To Double In Java?

Oct 31, 2014

how to use Java and for my coursework I have been asked to construct an application that will read in the exam mark and coursework mark and then print out to 1 decimal place the average of the coursework and exam mark. When I submit it to the coursework submission system it says it's incorrect.

The answer that it's asking for is the answer that my code produces (ex = 71 cw = 40 mark = 55.5) But for some reason it says this when I submit it:

-#### << Differences between expected (<) your answer (>) >> ------------
1c1
< ex= 91 cw = 80 mark = 85.5
---
> ex = 71 cw = 40 mark = 55.5
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Check the above output for why this attempt failed And when I change the ex to 91 and cw to 80 it asks for > ex = 71 cw = 40 mark = 55.5 again.

class Main
{
public static void main( String args[] ) {
int ExamMark=71;
int CourseworkMark=40;
double cost = (double)(ExamMark + CourseworkMark) / 2;
  System.out.printf("ex = " + ExamMark + " cw = " + CourseworkMark + " mark = " + cost);
System.out.println();
  }

Table Showing Different Values For Converting Kg To Lbs

Feb 19, 2014

I had to make a table showing different values for converting kg to lbs and I'm confused because when it compiles, some of the decimals show correctly and some of them show with several 0's added on with another number on the end. I've tried to do math.random, but I'm not sure how to tie it in with my program.

//1 kg = 2.2 lbs
public class kg_to_lbs {
public static void main(String[] args) {
//not sure if values are needed..
int kg = 1;
double lbs = 2.20;
//Table title

[Code]...

and this is some of the results I get

1 | 2.2
2 | 4.4
3 | 6.6000000000000005
4 | 8.8
5 | 11.0
6 | 13.200000000000001

GUI - Calling Int And Double Values From One Panel To Another

May 10, 2014

So I am making a panel project that calls three panels. Panel one holds all information and the other two panels are panels that open up when I press a button. How it works is I call the first panel, press a button, second panel opens. Then in the second panel I plug in a password. If it is correct, a third panel will open. I need to call values from the first panel into the third panel and those values act as sort of like counters. In the third panel it will display all the counters that were added as well as the complete sub total, tax, and total that the program accumulated during its run time duration. I know how to use constructors, accessors and mutators, but the values I need are generated in an event when I press a button. I am trying to figure out how to call those values from the event into the third panel. Here is my code :

Main Class:
import javax.swing.*;
public class AppleRegister {
public static void main(String[] args) {
double subTotalp2 = 0, taxP2 = 0, realTotalp2 = 0;
JFrame frame = new JFrame("Apple Crazy Cola Cash (Apple IIC) Register");

[Code] .....

Here is the main panel holding the information. The counters counterp21 through p24, subTotalp2, taxP2, and realTotalp2 are the values that need to be carried over to the third panel and displayed in the textfields. I will post half of the panel, at least the important parts. Notice that I made my constructor initialize double variables which are the subTotalp2, taxP2, and realTotalp2. In this instance, I am not calling the counters just yet due for the sake of testing purposes. TempListener2 is the event that holds the variables that I am trying to call into the third panel.

Main Panel:
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.text.DecimalFormat;
public class AppleRegisterPanel extends JPanel {
private JButton button1, button2, button3, button4, button5, button6;

[Code] ......

And here is how I am trying to call those values into the third panel. If you notice, the class is actually called AppleRegisterPanel2; this is because I made this before the second panel that is now implemented. This panel now acts as the third panel.

Third Panel:
public class AppleRegisterPanel2 extends JPanel {
private JButton b1;
private JTextField t1, t2, t3, t4, t5, t6, t7;
private JPanel panel, panel2, panel3;
private JLabel l1, l2, l3, l4, l5, l6, l7, l8, l9;
private double subTotalp2, realTotalp2, taxP2;

[Code] ....

So my question is; is what I am trying to do even possible? I know the information that is being stored is inside a void that is acting as an event. As it stands the code that is called in the third panel is 0.0. I know this code seems sloppy but I've been trying different things with no result. How I can do this if at all?

Using For Loop To Populate Array With Random Double Values

Oct 26, 2014

Write a program that creates an array that can hold 9 double values that represent baseball batting averages for a starting baseball lineup. Use a for loop to populate array with random double values in the range of 0.00 to 0.500. Recall that "double" values are what Java calls "real" numbers. Use a second for loop to print the values in the array with one number per line. Finally, use a third for loop to traverse the array and find and print the maximum batting average in the array. Note: you will need to use String.format to control the precision of a double number when you print it- Here is my code so far:

public class P2F {
public static void main (String[] args) {
double [] player= new double [9];
//player[0]= Math.random();
for (int index=0; index < player.length; index++) {

[Code] ....

When I open the terminal window I get different variations of this [D@4545c5]. I would like to know all the things I am doing wrong.

Converting Long Values To String - BufferedWriter Not Printing Desired Results

Apr 20, 2014

Currently, my program converts Long values to String. And when I test it out, it do print out the correct output. However, when the converted String value is passed over to be written in a text file, it seems that BufferedWriter isn't printing out the outcome that it's supposed to be.

saltVs = Long.toString(saltV);
System.out.print(saltVs); //will print out 79723172

Now the problem is here...It only prints out the last digit of the String value (instead of 79723172).

Here is my FileWriter/BufferedWriter part.

Why is that when I run my program using command prompt, it prints out the output that I wanted, but however when it comes to writing to the file, it doesn't come out right.

Calculate Distance Between Two Points - All Numbers And Return Values Should Be Of Type Double

Jul 8, 2014

Write method distance to calculate the distance between two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2). All numbers and return values should be of type double. Incorporate this method into an application that enables the user to enter the coordinates of the points.

Hints:

- The distance between two points can be calculated by taking the square root of

( x2 - x1 )2 + ( y2 - y1 )2

- Use Math class methods to compute the distance.

- Your output should appear as follows:

Type the end-of-file indicator to terminate

On UNIX/Linux/Mac OS X type <ctrl> d then press Enter

On Windows type <ctrl> z then press Enter

Or Enter X1: 1

Enter Y1: 1

Enter X2: 4

Counting Using Custom Scale

Aug 6, 2014

I'm having trouble creating a highly efficient algorithm for counting within a custom scale. This problem applies to futures trading, specifically treasuries contracts.

One specific treasury contract has 32 units before rolling over to the next whole number. So, the price scale looks something like this ...

1 0
1 1
1 2
...
1 29
1 30
1 31
2 0
2 1
...
2 30
2 31
3 0
...

If I pick a number (price) at random, let's say 1 28, and I want to add 8 units to that value, I should end up with 2 4. I can do this using brute force, calculating remainders, etc, etc....

Major Scale And Sequence Loop

Jan 30, 2015

I'm trying to figure out how to print the Major Scale of any give note in music. It works as follows:

There are 12 notes and each note is assigned a number

C = 0, C# = 1, D = 2, D# = 3, E = 4, F = 5, F# = 6, G = 7, G# = 8, A = 9, Bb = 10, B = 11.

After picking a random note, say F, the idea is to add the following sequence to move through the scale:

0, +2, +2, +1, +2, +2, +2, +1.

So, with F being 5, we move through the scale as 5, 7, 9, 10, 0, 2, 4, 5.

The theory is unimportant but, as you can see, the sequence loops back on itself, rather than continue past 11. This is where I'm stuck, though. I'm not clear on how to loop my numbers around in code. I'll show my attempt here:

public static void main(String[] scale) {
majorScaleOf(0); //0 represents C!!
majorScaleOf(5); //5 represents F!!
majorScaleOf(10); //Bb = B flat!!

[Code] ....

For the sake of simplicity I haven't shown the entire script of 'if' statements, but you get the idea.

The print out reads as:

0, 2, 4 (For C)
5, 7, 9 (For F)
10 (For Bb)

The last line demonstrates the problem, as I need it read as 10, 0, 2.

I've tried different approaches, but wanted to convey the basic problem with this post.

Fetch Type Of Product From Scale

Sep 11, 2014

Below is current process :

We have an application running successfully where we fetch the weight of product currently on Production Line using Java.

All the products on line belong to same order and are of same type.
User at beginning enter the type of product and starts the production line.

Proposed new process: Now client want that multiple type of product can belong to same production order. i.e. on a production line different type of products can come one after other. So we should now fetch the type of product also.

The Question : what are different possibilities in which we can find the type of product. Can java fetch color of a box ? If we use scanner on line that scans the product and sends the color information to Java.

Above is just a possibility. Can there be any other parameters that Java can use to differentiate in type of product ?

Currently we are clueless. What ever are the possibilities in Java we can propose the same to client. Even if that requires additional hardware.

-Ask the user how many taxpayers he would like to calculate taxes for.
-Ask the user to enter each taxpayer's first name, last name gross income, and number of children.
-Each taxpayer's tax due is computed as follows
-The taxpayer's dependency exemption is determined by multiplying $3,000 times the number of children.
-The taxpayer's net income is determined by taking the taxpayer's gross income and subtracting the taxpayer's dependency exemption.
-If the taxpayer's net income is between 0 and 50,000, the tax due is 15% of net income.

- Number of Minutes the phone was used. (with a textarea so the user input the minutes)
- 2 JRadioButtoms so the user can chose the regular or premium service.
- Amount Due (+10% taxes) (also with a textarea)
- Clear/Enter/Result/Done Buttoms

And I need to output:
- Account Name.

- Number of Minutes.
- Taxes
- Total Amount Due.

I have a couple of math formulas I have to add them to output the above however I'm new to java so I don't know which code to use.

The math formulas are:
-Regular charges = 20 + ( No. Minutes - 50 ) * 0.20
-Premium charges = 50 + ( No. Minutes - 75 ) * 0.50
-Taxes = ( Regular charges + Premium charges ) * 0.10
-Amount Due = Regular charges + Premium charges + Taxes
