Creating A Matrix For Magic Square Project

Jan 12, 2015

I am making a program that reads a set of numbers (e.g.: 8 1 6 3 5 7 9 4 2) and prints them into a matrix.For example:

8 1 6 3 5 7 9 4 2, will produce:
8 1 6
3 5 7
9 4 2

When taking in these numbers from the user, I am not allowed to let the user state what size the matrix is (e.g.;3 x 3). Instead the program needs to determine that itself. I have written the code below to count the number of numbers inputted, but now I am stuck as to how to get them into the array. I have what is suppose to be my array written, but it is not function yet.

import java.util.*;
public class MagicSquare {
public static void main(String[] args)
{
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);

Magic Square Says No

Nov 25, 2014

I'm having a small issue with my output on my code. here is what my output is: The magic value for your square is 34, which means that every row, column and diagonal of your square must add up to that number.

Please enter the 4 values for row 0, separated by spaces: 1 2 15 16
Please enter the 4 values for row 1, separated by spaces: 13 14 3 4
Please enter the 4 values for row 2, separated by spaces: 12 7 10 5
Please enter the 4 values for row 3, separated by spaces: 8 11 6 9
Checking square for problems:
DIAG: VALID
ROWS: VALID
COLS: VALID
RANG: VALID
MAGIC: No

MAGIC should be YES. However i keep getting it saying no.This is the correct output..The magic value for your square is 34, which means that every row, column and diagonal of your square must add up to that number.

DIAG: VALID
ROWS: VALID
COLS: VALID
RANG: VALID
MAGIC: YES

Here is my code..

import java.util.Scanner;
public class pdonahue_Magic {
public static void main(String args[]) {
int[][] theSquare = new int[4][4];
Scanner s = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println.

System.out.print("Please enter the 4 values for row 0, separated by spaces: ");
theSquare[0][0] = s.nextInt();
theSquare[1][0] = s.nextInt();
theSquare[2][0] = s.nextInt();

Creating Cursor For A Game That Moves Square By Square - Removing Trailing Images

Aug 31, 2014

I'm trying to create a cursor for a game that moves square by square. While it will move to the next square, though, it leaves the image of the previous cursor on the last square it was on.

As a visual explanation, this is what the program looks like on launch:

This is what it's suppose to look like after you press the right arrow key once (made by forcibly changing launch coordinates):

And this is what it actually looks like after you press the right arrow key once:

Here is the code for the program:

package cursortest;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import javax.imageio.*;
import java.io.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
public class CursorTest extends JPanel implements KeyListener{

[Code] ......

I'm fully aware that I could just use g.clearRect on the area and remove it for sure, but I know for a fact I shouldn't have to as I have another program I made a long time ago that tried to do something similar without needing to resort to that.

public class asteriskSquare {
public static void main(String[] args) {
for (int x = 1; x <= 4; x++){
for (int y = 1; y <= 4; y++){
System.out.println("+");
}
System.out.println("+");
}
}
}

All I'm getting is a single column of "+".

Looping Through 2D Array?

Jan 13, 2015

looping through 2d arrays.

This code works when printing '*' to show the number of elements in a 2d array:

static int [][] gameboard = new int[3][7];

for (int i = 0; i < gameboard.length ; i++) {

for (int j = 0; j < gameboard[0].length ; j++) {

System.out.print("*");

Thread.sleep(1000);

but then this does not:

static int [][] gameboard = new int[3][7];

for (int i = 0; i < gameboard.length ; i++) {

for (int j = 0; j < gameboard[i].length ; j++) {

System.out.print("*");

Thread.sleep(1000);

The difference is on the third line where i did gameboard[i] instead of gameboard[0]. I get a runtime error on the second one.

Creating Method That Prints The Square Root Of A Number Up To A Certain Number?

Feb 27, 2015

I am trying to create a method that prints the square root of a number up to a certain number. It needs to take a single int parameter for example "n" , and then print all of the (positive) even perfect squares less than n, each on a separate line. I want the method to be called something like this:

public void Squares(int n) {
}

I need the output to look something like this:

Example: if n = 40, your code should print

4
16
36

So I have been working for a few hours now and am really stuck.

This is what I have so far:

int count = 0;
int n = 4;
int max = n;
while(count < max) {
System.out.println(n);
n = n * n;
count++;

Multidimensional Array With Size Only In The First Square

Jan 14, 2014

I come to the point: I just started to learn java through various manuals and in one of them I came across a declaration of an array that I do not understand:

int[][] multiArr = new int[2][];

the manual says that you can allocate the multidimensional array multiArr by defining size in only the first square bracket but I can't undestand how you can use this array. Seems to be no way to store data with it!

Magic 8 Ball Code

Dec 5, 2014

I am writing a three part program that essentially works like a magic 8 ball. I have the switch/case part which gives the answers from a random number generator, then I also have a graphics file to create the ball as a visual. Lastly I have the frame to display the ball. The problem I am having is that, I am trying to make the program so that when you type in a question and press return the ball will show the answer and then you can type another question and press return and the ball will show a different answer. To quit you would simply type "quit". Right now however the ball is not showing up in my frame until I type quit, then to ask another question I have to end the run and start over again. Here is my program so far:

Case/Switch:
public class MagicEightBall
{
private int number;
private String answer;

Java Number Spiral - Creating 2D Array With Given Input Of Dimensions Of Array

Aug 3, 2014

I am working on a problem where i have to create a 2d array with given input of the dimensions (odd number) of array, along with a number within the array and to then print out all of the numbers surrounding that number.

Anyway, i am working on simply making the spiral, which should look like the one below.

n = 3

7 8 9
6 1 2
5 4 3

where the 1 always starts in the center with the 2 going to the right, 3 down, then left etc. etc. I was able to create the code by starting on the outer edges rather than the center and working my way to the middle, however my code always starts from the top left and goes around to the center where it needs to start from the top right. I am having trouble altering my code to meet this criteria. This is what i have thus far.

import java.io.*;
public class Spiral
{
public static void main(String args[])throws IOException
{
BufferedReader br=new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
System.out.print("Enter the number of elements : ");
int n=Integer.parseInt(br.readLine());

Creating Array That Works Like A Torus

Mar 14, 2014

I have create a program that takes a random array which is created by starting from 0 and adding Math.random() (double between 0 and 0.999) n times, and calculates the weighted average of each position within a certain radius. I currently have a program that does this but i was wondering how to create one using a torus. The basic principle is the last element is now equal to the first element and when the first element updates its position it takes into account the difference between the other elements including some of the last elements in the array.

Heres the code so far that works for one iteration. After one the code is incorrect and calculates the wrong values. I think using a circular list or a ring buffer may work but i have little experience with either.

import java.text.DecimalFormat;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Torus {
public static void main(String[] args) {
  DecimalFormat df = new DecimalFormat("#.###");

Creating A Window In 2D Char Array

The problem is my window is not drawing correctly too the border, but a couple extra chars on the x columns. Here is code. The dimensions of the window will eventually be passed through scanner in main, if i ever work out how to even draw it.Also, in class we never learnt to use the Graphics class, so im pretty sure we are not supposed to use it.

public class Window
{ //default values
private int xRow;
private int yCol;
private char ch;
public char[][] windowz = new char[30][20]; //30,20 (yx)flat values cuz doesnt work

Creating Array Of Objects In Constructor

Mar 16, 2014

I want to create a simple app that takes a name from the console then compares the name to a small phone book,when the name matches another name it will return the associated phone number.

I have a small contacts class which has name and number fields,Then I have a phone book class which populates an array with 4 contact objects that I can compare the entered number against.

here is my contacts class

public class Contact
{
String name;
int number;

[Code].....

In the main method I am just trying to print out one of the fields for one contact to see if I can actually access it to compare it to the name entered.Its saying "MaryJones" cannot be resolved to a type.I'm guessing I cant create all that code in the constructor?

Looping Doesn't Change Value

Apr 28, 2014

Write a program that asks the user for the low and high integer in a range of integers. The program then asks the user for integers to be added up. The program computes two sums:

The sum of integers that are in the range (inclusive), and the sum of integers that are outside of the range. The user signals the end of input with a 0.

Your output should look like this:

Sample input/output

In-range Adder Low end of range: 20
High end of range: 50
Enter data: 21
Enter data: 60
Enter data: 49
Enter data: 30
Enter data: 91
Enter data: 0
Sum of in range values: 100
Sum of out of range values: 151

This is my assignment and below is my code.

import java.util.Scanner;
class InRangeAdder {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner scan = new Scanner (System.in);
int low, high, data=1, rangesum=0, outrangesum=0;

[Code] ....

The problem is that the program simply gives an output of 0 for both "rangesum" and "outrangesum". I don't quite understand why that is. Also i have a quick question, the program needs me to end the program when the value of data is 0 but in order to initialize it I need to give it a value. Usually I would give it a value of 0 like I have for rangesum and outrangesum but if I do the program does not run till the loop as it considers the value of data to be 0 and ends the program right away. What would be a work around to this and when do I need to have a value to initialize an integer? for example, I do not need a value for low and high. Is this because the program recognizes that a value is going to be defined but cannot do that for the other integers as they are inside a loop?

Looping Thread Out Of Sync

Dec 12, 2014

I have a program ive been working on and it works, but the flags in the runnables seem to shift the output down 1. for instance i commented playa3. start(); to see whats going on, if i just run playa1 i got no issues, as soon as i enable playa2, i get this output:

Game continues...
Dealer places King and Queen on the table.

Game continues...
Dealer places Queen and Ace on the table.
Player one with 'Ace' places his card on the table.
Player one with 'Ace' wins the current deal.
King Queen

Game continues...
Dealer places Queen and King on the table.
Player two with 'King' places his card on the table.
Player two with 'King' wins the current deal.
Queen Ace

the second time the dealer deals, player one places his cards on the table when he was supposed to do that for the first deal which he didnt. the last line there, (king queen) is just a print statement that is referring to the dealers hand that, that iteration is responding too. below is my code, i

public static int i, count, dealerFirstCard, dealerSecondCard, player1, player2, player3;
