Swing/AWT/SWT :: Embedded Browser In A Standalone Java App Running On Windows

Aug 24, 2014

I have an embedded browser in a standalone java app running on windows. The browser calls up web pages over the internet with no problem.

import org.eclipse.swt.browser.Browser;
final Browser browser = new Browser(group01, SWT.NONE);
browser.setBounds(0, 0, 1000, 400);
browser.setVisible(true);
browser.pack();
browser.setUrl(texturl.getText());

I have a C executable which captures and documents network traffic. I communicate with it by entering http://27.0.0.1:6500 into any browser (it works with them all). It responds with a simple html form (three buttons, a tick box, a label, and one text box).However I cannot get it to work with the embedded SWT browser.

Standalone Taking So Much Time Than Web Application

Oct 29, 2014

I am working on a web-application where i have a functionality which generates reports based on the data from DB. for small amount of data its working nice if the data is huge its taking more time. to avoid this problem i developed a standalone batch where i generated the jar file for the sources in web-application and made a call to the appropriate methods.

But my problem is if web-application takes 10 secs to generate the report but in the case of standalone its taking nearly 3-5 mins to generate the same report. i didn't do much of the changes in code just using the same code as web-application

I am using tomcat 6 application server to run the web-application for standalone using batch commands.....

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Image Redraws Faster Inside Eclipse Than Standalone

Jan 31, 2014

I don't know if this is appropriate to Swing/AWT, or even if this is a Java issue, but I had quite a shock recently. I have been working on a kind of drawing program in which the user can select tiny control rectangles and drag them around, causing the shape of a polygon to change. (They are not implemented as Java Polygons or Shapes because some are one-dimensional). I have gotten it into pretty good shape, so I exported it from Eclipse, my development platform, into a standalone Java application. In the standalone application, each time I drag the mouse, the redrawing shows nasty flickering, as if it's running too slowly. While I was developing the application inside Eclipse, it ran perfectly, with no flickering whatsoever.

What gives? I'd expect that the in-Eclipse runs would be slower, because they're burdened with extra debugging baggage, while the exported standalone version should run faster. But the reverse is the case.

Query Embed In JAVA Returns NULL

Oct 4, 2014

I have embed a query in the JAVA to retrieve the data from the back end and I use Oracle for back end. What I'm trying to do is in my query has been shown below. The issue here is that result set returns the NULL. But fine when I change the query "SELECT 5 FROM DUAL" and it returns 5 for me which right. When I try to run the same at the back end as a query I'm getting proper result.

public String getReturnPart(String partNumberIn) {
//int returnPartNumber = 0;
  String query =
"SELECT COUNT(*) AS CHECK1 FROM PART_MASTER PM,UNITS_OF_MEASURE UOM WHERE PM.PART_NUMBER = '" +  partNumberIn
  + "' AND PM.UNIT_OF_ISSUE = UOM.UNIT_OF_MEASURE AND UOM.UNIT_TYPE = 0 ";
  //String query = "SELECT 5 AS CHECK1  FROM DUAL"; This returns fine as "5"
  ResultSet result = null;

Servlets :: Java Standalone Program To JSP Communication

Aug 4, 2014

The following programs exist:

1. I have a java application which accepts bio potential data every second or two and stores it in the database. This is a socket server which accepts this data from multiple clients and spawns a new thread for processing it to store in the db.

2. I have a jsp page on tomcat server which reads historic client data from database (stored by application 1) and displays it on the page.

The socket server program in 1.) above is not running inside of tomcat server.The new requirement now is : Display all of the human data coming in live on the jsp page.Now the problem: I will now need to pass the live data from socket server (which is stand alone) to the jsp which is running on a tomcat server.

Possible solutions:

APPROACH 1: Run the socket server in the tomcat instead of stand alone and store the frequently incoming data in a java object so the jsp can access this object every second and display it on a graph.

PROBLEM : The stand alone java application does not need to be included in a tomcat server except for the fact that the jsp needs access to the live data. Also, I have read that this is not the best way.

APPROACH 2: Expose the stand alone java application as a web service and communicate with the jsp using REST architecture.

PROBLEM : The complication of using this method is that it will not have the flexibility offered by websockets or server sent events (SSE) of auto updating the latest data. The jsp will have to keep polling for new data every one second which is also not a very good option.

Difference Between Application And Applet?

Apr 13, 2014

Can explain difference between applet and application?

What are differences in code? How to write application?

What are differences in use? I looked for some answers, but I can't understand what they are talking about.

For example:

Application:

Called as stand-alone application as application can be executed from command prompt

Applet:

Requires some third party tool like a browser to execute

But... While I export applet in exclipse I can use it without any browser, just like application(as I and avarage user knows it).

Ok, I understand difference like "Applets cannot read from or write to hard disk files."

So. What should I use while creating what?

For example, something as simple as windows calc, some 2d simply platformer, some more expanded app, like idk, spotify or media player or whatever?

Since after update 51 of java web applets are nearly useless(as I know, maybe I'm wrong?), what is better?

Can application have GUI or it is only applets thing(stupid question?)?

Where can I find any application tutorial? Everything that I found was for applets. Why?

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Running Application Using Java 1.6 And Windows-based X Server

Apr 15, 2011

At our company we run a third-party Java-based GUI application on one of our Linux server machine, displaying the application to our local Windows work stations using the Cygwin X Server.We noticed a few problems with a new version of this application and was able to narrow it down to the following conditions:

1. Java Swing application running on a UNIX host;
2. Java used is 1.6 (problem not noticed when using Java 1.5)
3. Displaying to Cygwin X server (I've heard other windows-based X servers have the same issue, but I don't have access to any others at this time).

If we run the application natively on Windows, I'm told if the application runs on the Linux host and displays natively to that machine's display there are no problems (although I'm not able to verify this myself).The problems are:

1. Any new frame/dialog is opened in the geographic center of the dual displays, rather than in the middle of one or the other;
2. Any attempt to drag the window to a different location on the display seems to work, but as soon as you let go of the drag, the window snaps back to the original location. This only happens the first time you try to move each window.
3. Drop-down controls (JComboBox, for example) just close back up as soon as you click on them. If you click and drag the mouse to attempt to make a selection, no selection can be made.

Are these known problems using 1.6 on UNIX displaying to Windows-based X Servers?

The only real problem is number 3. I expect that if I put more work into the window placement, I should be able to get past number 1. Number 2 is just a minor annoyance.The following is a simple Java Swing application which when run in the correct environment will exhibit the problems.

import java.awt.EventQueue;
import java.awt.GridBagConstraints;
import java.awt.GridBagLayout;
import java.awt.Insets;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;

Adding Elements To Existing JList Under Java 7

Mar 14, 2014

I know there was a change in the later versions of Java where the C++ equivalent of a <template type> was added. Unfortunately the change has 'broken' my older code. If I have a JList and I want to add elements to it then now I should specify the type e.g., the list will store Strings. When I do this and then add data to the list (or actually the list model) the code is ''fixed". However if after adding those new elements to the list I later need to add more elements, which isn't unreasonable for a list...to have elements added dynamically at run time then I again get the same compiler error message that I haven't correctly specified the type:

// Error message during compilation
Note: Driver.java uses unchecked or unsafe operations.
Note: Recompile with -Xlint:unchecked for details.

// My code

// Problem here: I try to add new elements to the list. It's the very last line of the method that results in the error. I tried various things such as:

// model.addElement(<String> s);
// but   so far nothing has worked. How do I add new elements to the list (model)?
public static void m2(JList <String> list)
    {
    String s;
    int i;
    String [] array = new String[10];

[Code] ....

// Code is OK: Create the array of strings to add to constructor of the JList

public static String[]  m1(){    String s;
    int i;
    String [] array = new String[10];
    for (i = 0; i < 5; i++)
    array[i] = i + "*";    return(array);

[Code] ....

// The change I had to make when compiling under the newer version of Java to indicate that the list would store strings

   // Things are okay here now but then when I try to add new elements to the model via method 'm2' that's where I get the compiler error

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Simple Applet Won't Run

Mar 11, 2002

I coded up a simple applet and some html with an applet tag and it tested out OK using the applet viewer. But it doesn't do anything (except draw a grey empty box 100x200) when executed from the application server. For the applicaton server test, I put the applet tag in the HTML Body of the JSP page i.e.

<applet code=CatApplet.class height=100 width=200> </applet>

The applet class file is in the same directory as the JSP page. The source for it is:

import java.awt.*;import java.awt.event.*;import javax.swing.*;import java.io.*;import java.net.*;
import java.util.Date;public class CatApplet extends JApplet{public void init (){setBackground(Color.green);
resize (250,100);}public void paint (Graphics g){g.drawString ("lets get some cat gui going", 35, 15);}}

Why won't my applet run when the applet tags are in the JSP page?
