I was having trouble running some Java programs (not my own) in Windows XP, and in the process I uninstalled and installed JRE versions 6, 7, and 8, one at a time, probably in the order 7, 8, 7, 6, 7. The program that had the original problem only worked in V6, but some other programs stopped working. I went back to V7, and those other programs still didn't work. The message was "the registry refers to a nonexistent java runtime environment installation". The only advice I could find with Web searches was to reinstall the JRE. Needless to say, that didn't work.
So I looked at the registry, and I found that there were still references to V8, which had been uninstalled. The first was
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTjarfileshellopencommand - (Default) = "C:Program FilesJavajre1.8.0_31binjavaw.exe" -jar "%1" %*
The folder re1.8.0_31 doesn't exist, so I changed it to jre7. That didn't work.
Then I found
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREJavaSoftJava Runtime Environment - CurrentVersion = 1.8
I changed this to 1.7, and deleted some following entries such as
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREJavaSoftJava Runtime Environment1.8 - JavaHome = C:Program FilesJavajre1.8.0_31
retaining entries such as
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREJavaSoftJava Runtime Environment1.7 - JavaHome = C:Program FilesJavajre7
That worked!
So, there is a bug in the installer(s): if you uninstall V8 and install V7, the 'CurrentVersion' isn't set correctly, with the result that the registry points to a non-existent folder. The V8 uninstallation should delete these entries, or the V7 installation should change them.

I am Having trouble with my program to validate. It is outputting null into the validation statement then it brings back a run-time error to that validation Statement for the String.
public String validateData ()
{
if (nm == null)nm = "Error! Must enter at least one character";
else nm = name;
return name;
}//end validation method
Why is this happening, and then once that is completed, why is the validation Sentence in tests Scores not able to validate. I traced it back to out put "Error, a number between 1<100".
public void validateTests ()
{
String testschange;
if (test1 < 0 || test1 > 100) {
testschange = " You have entered an invalid number, between 1-100. Please restart!";
testschange = Integer.toString( test1 ) ;

I am trying to run tshark command using runtime environment in java on ubuntu . My code is as follows :-
try {
String destip = map1.get((String) innObj.get("value"));
Runtime run = Runtime.getRuntime();
String tshk = "/usr/bin/tshark -r /home/pratibha/Desktop/vox.pcap -Y "ip.dst == "
+ destip
+ " && http" -T fields -e tcp.port -e col.Info";
Process pr = run.exec(tshk);
[Code]...
map1 is hashmap which contains the destination ip adress When i run the above code the exit code for process (pr) is 1 and hence the tshark command is not executing properly.

I am a novice to coding and very new to Java. It appears that I am having a similar problem as the user above "Scott Allen". With a few exceptions. My issue is that when I run the command "javac" from the command prompt I am receiving the same error:- "javac is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
After reading the comments from above I have configured my System Variables "Path" and "JAVA_HOME" to match the following:
JAVA_HOME: C:Program FilesJavajdk1.6.0_21in
Path: %JAVA_HOME%in; [First Variable]
There is no "Path" User variable on my computer, although there is a "TEMP" and "TMP" in the User Environment variables.
Currently I have the following Java related software installed:
- C:Program FilesJavajre6
- C:Program FilesJavajdk1.6.0_21
- C:Program FilesSunJavaDB
- C:Program FilesEclipse-jee-galileo-3.5.2
I have confirmed the "javac.exe" is located within the in directory of Javajdk.1.6.0_21..When I send "Java -version" to the command prompt the following is returned: java version "1.6.0_26"..Immediately I noticed that the version is wrong, but don't know why or what to do. Below is the output from the command "Java" using the command prompt.
Usage: java [-options] class [args...]
(to execute a class)
or java [-options] -jar jarfile [args...]
(to execute a jar file)
where options include:
-client to select the "client" VM
-server to select the "server" VM
-hotspot is a synonym for the "client" VM [deprecated]
The default VM is client.

I've Installed oracle JDK version 1.8 on a debian machine that already has openjdk 1.6.i've set the path variable in etc/login.defs and java_home variable In etc/environment. When I echo $JAVA_HOME it points to the oracle version correctly and when I run javac It uses the oracle 1.8 version. The problem is when I run the java command , It runs the openjdk 1.6 version and I'm not sure why.If I type java -version It shows the openjdk version.

I currently use Eclipse to maintain our Java application. I recently upgraded from Java 6 to Java 7. I updated my Eclipse projects to use the Java 7 .jar files. I can run the application from Eclipse via the Run Configuration.
I can also run the Ant build and it completes successfully. When I install the application on my desktop, I receive the "Java Virtual Machine Launcher: Could not find main class..." error. My CLASSPATH is set to ".".

So I'm trying to add two numbers using a stack class I made myself. I have a main class with a main method in which I use three stacks on holds one number one holds the other and then I sum one digit at a time keeping in midn that there may be a carry before putting the result on a third stack.
My problem is I'm getting a null pointer error when it should be putting an integer into the top of my stack which is index 0, I've checked my code and can't see why it would be doing this.This is my main method in my main class
import java.util.*;
import java.io.*;
public class CS25driver {
public static void main(String[]args) throws FileNotFoundException {
[code]...
my input file looks like a single line of input stating the problem followed by two lines of input which need to be summed.this is the error I'm getting
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException

I am trying to return an array and I keep getting a null error. The below class sets the material numbers into an array and should return that array if called :
public class Jobs {
private int[] materialsNumber;
//change to parts and create another class that gets the materials for the parts
public int[] job1() {
materialsNumber[0] = 11960120;
[Code] ....
I later try to call the method. The program executes but stops after I println "test in loop"
public class PurchaseOrdersToParts {
private Jobs job = new Jobs();
int[] getPartsForPurchaseOrder(BigDecimal purchaseOrder) {
System.out.println("inside getparts");
BigDecimal testNum = new BigDecimal(123.0);

I have an input text file as file.txt where, it consists of only real values separated with commas, and arranged as rows as columns as mentioned below :
1,2,3,4,5,6,10,5,8,9
1,4,7,8,9,0,6,4,3,2,1
2,4,5,8.1.3.4.6.7.9.0
the number of rows is 100 and the number of columns are 9, that is they are fixed.Above is just an example, the file consists of decimal values.What I require is for each column of values I need to find out it's average or mean, that is in above example,
for 1st column:(1+1+2)/3
for 2nd column(2+4+4)/3
for 3rd column(3+7+5)/3,,,,,,,like this till the last column.
So I need to take the input from the .txt file, calculate the column average of each column and the average of each column must be displayed as output. I have done a bit of coding, but it is giving a run-time error as NullPointerException.I will forward my code as attachment, the reading of file, is done as string in java and then it must be converted to double values, also to read the comma separated input from a file I have used the split().

Question 2: In addition, I am having trouble figuring out how to count the number of occurrences of each string in the array and print the counts. I've been looking at other posts but they are more advanced and I have not yet learned how to use some of the tools they are referring to.
