Error Occurs Unless Initializing Variable?
Oct 12, 2014
I don't understand that the error occurs when I don't initialize the variable myPoint. Whereas, I initialize the variable myPoint after variable declaration and before place of error.
package enumeration;
import java.util.Random;
public class Craps {
[Code]....
When I initialize the variable myPoint to zero in its decleration, the error disappear. But why? I have already initialized the variable myPoint in default case before the line of error occured..

My objective is to write a program that calculates the bodyfat of people. The difficult thing is, that the calculations are different for males and females, so I tried to prompt the user to state whether they are male or female, then use and "if" statement to tether their response to the corresponding calculations.
Here's my algorithm:
Here's what I have:
package bodyweight;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Weightcalc {
static Scanner console = new Scanner(System.in);
public static void main(String[] args){
[Code] ....
It keeps telling me that bodyweight is not initialized, but when I do, I get a hell of a lot more bugs on everything telling me they aren't initialized. I just want the program to transfer the user to select inputs, based on whether they are male or female.

I know what the error means but I don't think initializing the variable will make my code work as intended so I'm having a little dilemna here... here's the code and I'll highlight the part that is said to be not initialized:
Java Code:
import java.util.Scanner;
public class ItemCost {
public static void main (String []args){
int i=1,item=1,e=1, f=1, g=1;
int items, d ;
double gst, qst, subt, Tot = 1, PriceItems ;
[Code] ....
So I'm supposed to get the following output :
Java Code:
Please input the amount of items bought 2
Please input the price of the item 1 1
Please input the price of the item 2 2
Please input the rate of GST in % 20
Please input the rate of QST in % 18 mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
HOWEVER my program doesn't seem to add input of item 1, and 2 if I initialize subt= 0 initially. It'll only take the last value inputted in the loop. By the way, the increments are counters to count the amount of errors the user might input by accident ( or whatever). Some people have been pointing it out as useless but that's the only way I found it to work.

I am getting an error stating that 'word cannot be resolved to a variable' pointing to my return value. Why? Should I make a default String value for word before my while loop or something, like
String word = " ";
?
String getItRight(){//make sure the user enters the password correctly
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
boolean repeating = true;

Consider the following simple code:
public class Test {
private final int arg;
private final Runnable runnable1 = new Runnable() {
@Override
public void run() {
// No errors here, exactly as expected
System.out.println("ARG: " + arg);
[Code] ....
The java compiler (version 1.8.0-b132) produces the following error when compiling this code:
"Error:(14, 46) java: variable arg might not have been initialized"
Actually, I do not expect the error here.
Both declarations 'runnable1' and 'runnable2' are essentially the same: these are just Runnable objects accessing value of the 'arg' field (which is initialized in the constructor).
The only difference between the declarations is that 'runnable1' - is an old-fashion instantiation of Runnable, whereas 'runnable2' - is an instantiation of Runnable via a lambda expression.

I want to use a try catch block, but I am not sure how to fix this problem:
int a;
try{
a = Integer.parseInt(A.getText());
}
catch (Exception e){
Output1.setText("Error");
}
//do someting with a here
The purpose of the try-catch is to catch blank input.The problem with this is that underneath the try - catch I get an error saying that the variable might not have been initialized. I know why this happens. I know I could initialize the varaible before the try - catch, but there is no default or null I can set an int as. If I initialized it as 0, the blank input will no longer be catched.how to make this problem disappear?

My dynamic web project has a java class that captures a session variable with the following code.
HttpSession LoginSession = request.getSession();
String VAR = LoginSession.getAttribute("myVar").toString(); //This is the row 127
If i test the app in local (Mac + Java 1.8 + Tomcat 8) all works. In my remote cloud server (Ubuntu 14.10 + Java 1.8 + Tomcat 8) all works, except this class, that has this code. I copy the complete error here. Note that the row 127 of the error message is the second row of the previous code; and, if i comment this row with // and assign a fix variable all works. So, the problem is that 127^ row.

dummy = new Node();
dummy.next = dummy;
dummy.pre = dummy;

dummy.pre = dummy;

I am new to JSP and I'm having a problem with captcha containing a value in the field when toggling from the first page to another and clicking submit on the second page before entering data to validate the fields and the code just falls through and returns the error "Please enter the correct code". The values returned are (captcha)96043 (code)null, captcha is not null because it is retrieved from session which is the last value captured from the page I'm assuming.
I've used request.getSession().removeAttribute( "captcha" ); before building the page to clear out the values, resetting captcha to null etc.; nothing is working.
Here's the code:
boolean isPostBack =false;
String captcha = (String) session.getAttribute("captcha");
String code = (String) request.getParameter("j_captcha_response");

Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);
Question question = new Question();
Quiz quiz = new Quiz();
System.out.print("Enter the prompt: ");
question.prompt = sc.nextLine();
[Code] .....
Here is the example run that I am trying to achieve:
* 1. Enter the prompt: What is the capital of the USA?
* 2. Enter a possible answer: New York City, NY
* 2. Is New York City, NY the correct answer (y/n)? n
* 3. Enter a possible answer: Pittsburgh, PA
* 3. Is Pittsburgh, PA the correct answer (y/n)? n
* 4. Enter a possible answer: Washington, DC
* 4. Is Washington, DC the correct answer (y/n)? y
* 5. Enter a possible answer: Chicago, IL
* 5. Is Chicago, IL the correct answer (y/n)? n
The problem is that my for loop runs through correctly the first time, but doesn't seem to react to me initializing my choices array after that. It ends up looking like this:
Enter the prompt: What is the capitol of the USA?
Enter a possible answer: New York City, NY
Is New York City, NY the correct answer (y/n)?n
Enter a possible answer: Is the correct answer (y/n)?
But I cannot understand why it's doing that.

For basic arrays, we can directly combine declaration and initialization as E.g: int[] num= new int[2]
But can we do this do for forming class object arrays? like
class stu
{

}
stu[] s=new stu[2]

I have a C struct as follows:
struct myHAI
{
int id;
char celcius[5];
char fahrenheit[5];
[Code] .....
I think the Java code is just a little to kludgey. I have to add 256 records to the 3D array which means I have to call the method 256 times. I'd really like to initialize the class all at once similar to the C struct. But I don't know if that is possible. Thus, any less kludgey way of initializing a 3D array?

Ex:
This is Attribute Description outputText :

<rich:column id="CMAttributeBrowserDescriptionColumn2" styleClass="selectedObj"
rendered="#{CMBrowserBean.attributePresent}" >
<!--<h:outputText id="SelectedObjectDescription1" render="true" value="#{currentAttribute.value}"/>-->
[b][quote]<h:outputText styleClass="attributeTableFont1" readonly="false" id="attributeTextdescription" disabled="false"/>[/quote][/b]

The action should be for :
<rich:column id="AttributeColumn2" styleClass="parentBrowserColumn">
[b]<a onclick="document.getElementById('CMBrowser:0:CMAttributeBrowserDescriptionForm:attributeTextdescription').value=#{currentAttribute.name}" >[/b]<h:outputText id="AttributeName" title="#{currentAttribute.name}" value="#{currentAttribute.name}"

I'm trying to write a program that counts the number of times each number in an array occurs. In theory I understand how it work, you take the first element in the array, compare it again the rest of the array and any time it occurs in the array you increment a counter by 1. Then move onto the next element A[1] and so on...
This is what I've done so far :
public static void main(String[] args) {
int[] array = {5,6,2,5,2,2,0,1,6};
int count = 0;
for(int i = 0; i <array.length; i++) {
int val = array[i];
for(int j = i+1; j<array.length; j++)
[Code] .....
I think I'm on the right track as it correctly prints out the frequency of the first 3 elements, but I'm definitely going wrong somewhere as it just doesn't do it right after that!

When an exception occurs that will affect the entire functioning of a program, in other words, the program will not be able to do what it is intended to do, is it best just print the exception to user and run System.exit(1)? And then force the user to run the program again.

System.out.println("Total # of pips" + "
