Finding Divisible Numbers And Replace With String

Jul 13, 2014

My interest in Java leads me to try and print numbers from 1-100. The output should show all numbers from 1-100 and each number that is divisible by by 13 should be replaced with a string "Fuzzy".

public class Fuzzy {
public static void main (String[]args){
for(int i = 0; i < 100; i++)
if(i % 13==0)
System.out.print(i + "fuzzy");
}
}

Average Program - Divisible Numbers Not Calculating Correctly

May 21, 2015

For some reason, the averages aren't calculating correctly. I'm aware I need to convert to double if I'm dividing by an odd amount but that itself isn't the issue. It's just simple easy divisible numbers that are not being calculated correctly. For instance, (10 + 10 + 10 + 50) / 4 = should be 2 but I get 10.

Here is the code:

import java.util.Scanner;
public class Avg {
public static void main(String[] args){
Scanner inputGains = new Scanner(System.in);
int userInput = inputGains.nextInt();

Replace All Command That Is Found On String Between 2 Double Quotes?

how to replace all the command that is found on a string between 2 double quotes? for example I have a text file that contains data like as following

A,"-16,12","-178,245","-15,506"
B,"-16,12","-178,245","-15,506"
C,0, 0,1

I need an output like this:

A,"-16.12","-178.245","-15.506"
B,"-16.12","-178.245","-15.506"
C,0, 0,1

I did this but without regular expression. It seems to me that a regular expression it's more elegant than to parse every line and replace it.

Finding Space In String

Jan 19, 2015

I have an assessment for college, the part of my code that im struggling with is the part where the user enter their first name followed by a space and then their second name. I m using ---------------fullname = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("enter your firstname followed by a space then your second name " ); ------------- to capture this. the issue is if the user only enter 1 name I need to output an error. the issue is I cant find a way to tell if the user entered a second name. This is what I have so far:

public void makename() {
// makes an inputbox to ask their name
fullname = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("enter your firstname followed by a space then your second name " );
 //separates the first and second name into 2 strings in order to make the username

[code]....

The problem is it accepts anything I type in without causing an error. What should I type in to stop this? ive tried anything but I cant find a way to tell if a surname has been entered or not.

Finding String Length Without Variables

Oct 14, 2014

The problem asks me to write an expression whose value is the number of characters in a specific string. Normally, it would be a simple task of using the String.length() method, but that is not allowed. In fact, no variable declaration is allowed (it's a MyProgrammingLab assignment, if any are familiar).

Simply put, if I have a String "This is a sample string." is it possible to find the length without assigning it to anything?

In other words, the code must be able to go into the parentheses of System.out.println( ); and correctly print the length of said string.

The answer, for those curious:

System.out.println("This is a sample string.".length());

I didn't know the .length() method could be called on a literal. Now if only I could find out how to close this thread...

Code Converts A String That Has All Numbers Into Integer

May 8, 2015

I am trying to code using error handling and I am a bit confused on how to go about doing it correctly. My code converts a string that has all numbers into an integer and the error handling should recognize that if it isn't a proper number and ask the user to try again or enter 'q' to quit.Do I place a throw new exception in the try block and put conditionals like if charAt(i) is some letter or a symbol then throw new exception?

Extracting Numbers In Word Format From A String Of Text

Aug 7, 2014

I am trying to do is extract numbers that are in word format in a long String, i.e. a song, and return each of their numerical values, in order to add them all up. So I'd like to calculate the sum of all of the numbers in the text. This has to work for any piece of text and for all numbers up to a trillion.

So I broke the string down into tokens and stored them in a String []. And I divided up the possible numbers in word format into:

LARGEST: thousand, million, billion, trillion
HUNDRED: hundred
TENS: twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety
UNITS: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine
SPECIALS: ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen

I believe that these are the only words that it will need to recognize. I began reading the tokenized string from right to left and then when I came across a unit, special or tens as the first number I hit, I would then set it's numerical value and check if the word before was also a number and whether to add or multiply etc. i.e. First number hit is a two, if the number before is sixty, then I would just add it to sixty and check the word before that and so on.

However, when implementing it, it seems like an extremely long way around it. How I could implement this in a swifter manner? An example of it working would be:

"Nine Million rockets turned Three times and met Twenty Two Aliens", it would extract, Twenty Two as 2, then 20 = 22, then extract Three as 3, and then Nine Million as 1,000,000 x 9 = 9,000,000

9,000,000 + 22 + 3 = 9,000,025
