After learning about Euclid's Algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor of 2 integers, I decided to make a demo program in Java.
public static int gcd(int number1, int number2) {
int num1 = number1;
int num2 = number2;
if(number1 < number2){

In attempting to find the greatest common divisor (gcd) of two integers, n1 and n2, whereas k is a possible gcd and gcd is initialized to 1, the following code has been entered:
for (int k = 2; k <= n1 && k <= n2; k++) {
if ( n1 % 2 == 0 && n2 % 2 == 0)
gcd= k;
}
When asked to change the previous line of code to this:
for (int k = 2; k <= n1 / 2 && k < n2 / 2; k++){
the questions states this revision is wrong and to find the reason.....well, I've changed it, entered "3" (per the answer key) for n1 and n2....
now I can see logically where k (2 in this example) is not <= n1/2, which is 3/2 or 1, since we're dealing w/integers, yet when I compile and run, my answer is indeed, gcd = 1. However, since this is a Boolean expression where && is being used, since the first portion evaluates to "false", the 2nd portion isn't executed and thus my result of 1?...... loops are throwing me for one, for sure....

a[1] = 10;

What program needs to find is the most biggest number. It does the job, but another task of the program is to find the index of that number . The second loop should do just that, but for some reason, as the loop goes further, it passes through the if statement even though answer "a[i]" is not equal to "answer". The idea is that if a[i] and answer are equal, the "i" should represent the index number.

I have an assessment for college, the part of my code that im struggling with is the part where the user enter their first name followed by a space and then their second name. I m using ---------------fullname = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("enter your firstname followed by a space then your second name " ); ------------- to capture this. the issue is if the user only enter 1 name I need to output an error. the issue is I cant find a way to tell if the user entered a second name. This is what I have so far:
public void makename() {
// makes an inputbox to ask their name
fullname = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("enter your firstname followed by a space then your second name " );
//separates the first and second name into 2 strings in order to make the username
[code]....
The problem is it accepts anything I type in without causing an error. What should I type in to stop this? ive tried anything but I cant find a way to tell if a surname has been entered or not.

The problem asks me to write an expression whose value is the number of characters in a specific string. Normally, it would be a simple task of using the String.length() method, but that is not allowed. In fact, no variable declaration is allowed (it's a MyProgrammingLab assignment, if any are familiar).
Simply put, if I have a String "This is a sample string." is it possible to find the length without assigning it to anything?
In other words, the code must be able to go into the parentheses of System.out.println( ); and correctly print the length of said string.
The answer, for those curious:
System.out.println("This is a sample string.".length());
I didn't know the .length() method could be called on a literal. Now if only I could find out how to close this thread...

My interest in Java leads me to try and print numbers from 1-100. The output should show all numbers from 1-100 and each number that is divisible by by 13 should be replaced with a string "Fuzzy".
public class Fuzzy {
public static void main (String[]args){
for(int i = 0; i < 100; i++)
if(i % 13==0)
System.out.print(i + "fuzzy");

I am trying to remove a character from string as below
public String reomveChar(String str, int n) {
if(0<=n & n<=(str.length()-1)){
//str.charAt(n)
char o=str.charAt(n);
return str.replace("o","");
//a.replace("o","");
}
return null;
}'
what is the best way to remove it.
If i call like
removeChar("hello", 1) i should see hllo.
When there are more than one way to do a challenge in java which one to choose as best way.
What is the criteria to decide one particular way of writing code is best among say 'n' different number of ways.

so my task is to write a code which would ask user to input the year as integer and first three letters of the month with first being an upper case letter. Than the program would determine the number of days for given year and month.
Currently I have a brain crash on how to check, if the user has provided the month with first character being upper Case. If not, than the program would automatically correct the character. Problem starts at line 17.
import java.util.Scanner;
public class DaysOfMonth4_17 {
public static void main (String[] args) {
//Initiate scanner
Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in);
//Ask for year input and use is as INT
System.out.println("Enter the year");

I have to create a code that can calculate the number of upper case letters in a string that is entered by the user (below.)
Java Code:
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
public class mainClass {
public static void main (String [] args) {
String userInput;
userInput = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter a string.");
[Code] ....
My issue is that I would like the program to be able to function properly when spaces are entered into the string. As it is right now, I believe it is only processing the first string entered into the input box.

The case is : I have a predefined string S = "Peter,please answer my question" and now when i input another string inside the text field character by character i want characters from the string S to enter instead of the input string. In short, the input string should be disguised as string S.

import javax.swing.JOptionPane;

I have this program to see the occurrences of a character in a string stored in a text file. My text file has the following contents (as shown below):
P-P-N-N-L-V
N-R-U-S-R-Q
K-Q-E-L-E-A
A-J-B-G-E-F
F-E-L-Q-R-R
U-F-J-V-I-M
P-I-Q-K-B-K
U-N-L-F-O-B
M-A-N-M-H-O
P-Q-J-D-N-I
G-U-O-D-F-I
Q-M-M-B-C-Q
N-B-I-L-E-J
S-A-T-Q-H-U
C-L-G-U-J-M
R-P-V-M-A-A
C-R-A-V-L-B
M-U-Q-K-M-Q
E-I-C-H-V-J
J-N-N-K-R-P
As you notice, each character is seperated by a hyphen (serving as its delimiter). I want to only go through 10 lines in the text, instead of all 20 of them. So, I wrote the program in such a way that I intend to reach into the indices of each character in the text file. Since there are six characters in each line so that means there are 6 indices - and there are 10 lines I only want to go through. So, 6 indices times 10 lines equals 60 indices. Hence, there are only 60 indices I need to go through. In that manner, it's like I have gone through only 10 lines through that way.
It compiled perfectly fine but upon running it, I ran through an error in the black DOS screen that says
"java.lang.ArrayIndexOutofBoundsException: 6 ".
How do I work around that?
The code I wrote is shown below...
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class hotandcoldclusterdeterminer_test {
public static void main (String args [])throws IOException {
[Code]....

The String class stores the characters of the string internally as a private char[] and calling someString.length() results in getting the length field from the character array. I am looking to get the details on how the length is implemented. I understand it is a field, but in the original question I provide sample code and really want to know if/how the resulting byte code may differ when compiled, perhaps I am just not seeing the simple answer through my confusion.
