GUI Dice Game Compilation - Cannot Find Symbol Error

Nov 29, 2014

I'm having some difficulty getting this GUI dice game to compile. I'm using javac and notepad++ for this and I'm getting the following errors:

DiceGame.java:34: error: cannot find symbol
die2label = new JLabel();
^
symbol: variable die2label
location: class DiceGame

[Code] ....

4 errors

My code is as follows:

import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import java.util.*;
import javax.swing.*;
import javax.swing.event.*;
public class DiceGame extends JFrame

[Code] ....

I'm sure the problem is something trivial, but I guess that's all part of the learning process that I have to go through.

I have written the below program and while compiling i am getting error. The program and error details goes as follows,

//compute distance of light travels using Java long variable.
  class Light {

I have given the Java file name as 'Light.java'. I have also verified the availability of the java file and compilation path. both are matching. Also, Java file name and class name defined are also same.

Cannot Find Symbol Error

Jun 12, 2014

I thought I have been getting this right, but I keep getting stuck on this one error. Here is my code. Why it keeps getting a 'cant find symbol' error?

// import statements
import java.util.Scanner;
// class declaration
public class GradeConverter
{
// main method declaration
public static void main(String[] args)
{
// display a welcome message

[code]....

It is just a simple input a number between 1-100 and it spits out the letter grade.

Cannot Find Symbol Error

Sep 18, 2014

I'm picking up Java for a class, and having prior C++ knowledge this stuff has been fairly straightforward with the exception of trying to learn the whole IO system in this language.

className.java:line_number: error: cannot find symbol
myList.add(input);
^

I have dealing with this error left and right after picking up this language, and I can never seem to figure out what it's trying to tell me. I've heard people say it's referring misspelled objects or methods, but I've double and triple checked my code and that never seems to be true for me.I'm trying to make a small program which will allow me to play with the LinkedList object so I can gain some familiarity with how they work in Java, and I have this code so far:

import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class playWithLists {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
//List<String> myList = new LinkedList<String>();
LinkedList myList = new LinkedList();
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
String input = "";

[code]....

The compiler is giving me an error at line 16 (specifically: myList.add(input); )

Cannot Find Symbol Compile Error

Jul 23, 2014

programming altogether and after almost reaching half way in the 'Head first java' book I decided to try and apply some of what I've learnt so far and write my first 'Object orientated' program. As this is pretty much the first program I've ever written, I decided to write a program to ask for two integers and add them both together and then present them to the user (the goal eventually being a basic fully working command line calculator with +,-,* and /. I'm expecting many compile errors but not the following errors below.

I have three .java files contained within a folder and after trying to figure out how to compile all three files (as they use one another) all at once, I came across this ---> javac *.java

so I typed this in the command line whilst in the directory containing the three files assuming *.java is the best approach and then I receive the following errors:

inputOutput.java:10: error: cannot find symb
c.addition() = intIn.nextInteger();
^
symbol: variable c
location: class inputOutput

Dummy Node In Doubly Linked List - Cannot Find Symbol Variable Error

Check For Upper Case Letters From User Input - Cannot Find Symbol Compile Error

No Compilation Error - No Class File Produced

Dec 24, 2014

I've a .java file that won't compile, but produces no errors (in cmd prompt).

I think its the import of java.util.ArrayList thats causing the problem (because it can compile a different file in the same source folder) - so i'm assuming its the classpath that is wrong. which is fine. i love fighting with classpaths.

But why isn't it providing me with an error. the compiler usually goes bat-sh.. crazy if the -cp is incorrect!

Its because I'm switching between command prompt and a text editor and it hadn't saved the file for some reason, and still won't am getting rid of this editor!!

Populating HashMap - Code Too Large Compilation Error

Mar 17, 2014

We are getting "Code too large" compilation error for one of our class. This class contains public String fields for label ID and value. We use this class for localization, except for English all other language labels come from .properties files.

The reason we are getting this error is because we have a static block in which using reflection we are populating a HashMap with all public fields and their value. The number of fields have gone up to the extinct where we are crossing the 64K limit for a static method. One of the most feasible solution was to use .properties files for English labels as well.

I will be calling this class MyLabels. We defined a super class for MyLabels called MyLabelsExt. And now we are adding labels into the super class instead of the MyLabels. By running some tests we confirmed that the map that we initialize in MyLables class contains all the fields from both MyLabels and MyLabelsExt class.

How is the 64K limit error not coming if the labels are defined in a super class. Does that mean Java is able to identify that some of the fields are coming from parent class, and that is being treated as separate from the child class. And how is the map that we initialize having all the value.
