How To Make XML - Game To Hold High Scores Of Three Different Levels

May 22, 2015

I am a beginning programmer and was learning how to make an XML. It was for a simple game and only needs to hold the highscores of three different levels. Here is what I coded:

try {
OutputStream fout= new FileOutputStream("highScores.xml");
OutputStream bout= new BufferedOutputStream(fout);
OutputStreamWriter out = new OutputStreamWriter(bout, "8859_1");

[code]....

My issue is that I run this code every time I create the program and the scores are reset to 0. How can I make a small change so that I only run this block of code and create the XML the first time the program is run?

Modified Cash Register - Allow User To Choose Preferred Bills

Feb 5, 2015

I am trying to create a slightly modified cash register. The user will enter the amount of the item, the payment received, calculate the change/refund, and then allow the user to choose the preferred bills.

import java.util.Scanner;
public class Register {
private static Scanner input;
public static void main(String[] args) {
input = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("*****CASH REGISTER*****" );
System.out.print("Item Amount: " );
int amount = input.nextInt();

[Code] ....

I will try to clarify the code, to make things a little easier to interpret. in the refund method, I have set up a 2-d array to exist and function as an excel sheet. The refund amount is passed to the method and compared to each bill of the array. Once the refund is determined to be greater than a bill, the user is prompted to enter the preferred bill type. This is where my problem is...I would like the program to then calculate the number of bills and keep a tally of those bills in the 2nd column and then determine the new refund amount at which point the user will be prompted again to determine the desired bill.

Then print out the array of bills that are not equal to 0.

Java Game - Breaking Down A Method To Smaller Methods And Where To Call

Aug 6, 2014

I have a question about a method I have. In my game, I had a move method to move my player left and right, and originally this method was huge, as it also took care checking collisions and a few other things. I broke it up a bit and put the collisions in their own methods and call them from again another method... Here is an extract which I hope illustrates my point:

private static final double MOVE_SPEED = 0.2;
private static final double MAX_MOVE_SPEED = 3.5;
private static final double STOP_SPEED = 0.18;
private double xPos;
private double yPos;

[Code] .....

Something I thought might be a good idea is to check the direction collision when im doing the calculations for that direction:

if(moveLeft) {
dx -= MOVE_SPEED;
(dx < -MAX_MOVE_SPEED) {
dx = -MAX_MOVE_SPEED;
}
checkLeft();
}

But then I would also need to check it when I'm slowing down the left movement:

if(dx < 0.0) {
dx += STOP_SPEED;
if(dx > 0.0) {
dx = 0.0;
}
checkLeft();
}

Then I thought instead i can check it after both of these steps:

if(moveLeft || dx < 0.0) {
checkLeft();
}

I guess my question is quite general: How much is acceptable to break up a method? How many chains of method calls is acceptable? Is it ok to call the same method from different nearby places?

JRE :: Changing Default Security Levels

Dec 21, 2014

I have several Windows 7 Enterprise machines that have already been deployed via image and need to lower the security settings for use on internal web based applications.

Is there an easy way to manipulate the configuration (a file) so that I may simply make the changes by overwriting the current configuration settings instead of, having to go to each device, opening the Java console, and changing the security settings that way?

I have attempted to login as the machine administration, make the changes on the Java console with the hopes this configuration would have migrated to all user profiles that log into the PC. Is there a "public profile" configuration file I can change and if so, what should I do.

How To Prevent A User From Going Out Of Bounds In Simple Array Game

Apr 26, 2015

I am making a very simple 2D array game where the player is asked what size they would like the game board to be. After entering, it displays the board and the player 'P' starts at index [0][0]. After that, they are asked for an action, which can be "up", "down", "left", "right", or "exit". I will be including some extra later (like a treasure at the end, or random obstacles), but for now this is what the game consists of.

I was instructed to "do nothing" when/if the player attempts to go out of bounds. I am trying to simply print an error, such as "Out of bounds! Try again.", then prompt the player again for an action. I even tried to make a boolean method to catch it, but to no avail.

I don't want the exception to occur at all. I just simply want the error message to print to the player and ask for another action. I would prefer not to use try/catch, or try/catch/finally since I already tried that and it still gave the exception error.This program consists of two classes. I will show the class containing the main first, then the client-server type class second.

import java.util.Scanner;
public class Driver {
public static void main(String[] args) {
World world = new World();
boolean keepPlaying;
keepPlaying = true;
boolean isOutOfBounds;
isOutOfBounds = false;
int height = 0;
int width = 0;
int x = 0;
int y = 0;

In addition, in class Ticket will be stored the arrival time of the customer and the characteristics of his vehicle.

Finally, in the class Parking(which provides 80 places available), here it should be added the various types of vehicles.

Recursive Program - Choose K Objects Out Of N

Apr 20, 2015

I recently wrote a simple recursive program that chooses K objects out of N (I was asked to use the variables N choose the R, however) total objects. Here is the code:

int n = 0;
int r = 0;
//the total number of objects defaults to 0
String nChoice = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null, "How many objects are there to choose from?");
String rChoice = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null, "How many object are to be chosen from this group?");
try {
n = Integer.parseInt(nChoice);

[Code] ....

It works fine, however in my class we were given two different formula to implement into our code. I used the one above, obviously. However, the second formula we were given was:

C(n,R) = n!
-------(R!(n-R)!)

I had to get the spacing right.

How do I read this formula? How could it be implemented? What are the benefits (if there are any) from using one method over the other? Which method of calculating N choose K (or, in my case, N choose R) would be more widely accepted?
