Abstract Classes And Access Modifiers

Jan 21, 2015

I'm having difficulty understanding this small piece of code:

package food;
public abstract class Fruit {
private String color;
private String tasteType;
public void setColor(String color) {
this.color = color;
}
public abstract void setTasteType(String taste);
}

The above is an abstract class which describes the basic structure that every fruit should "extend".

The below is a concrete subclass of the Fruit class called Apple.

import food.Fruit;
class Apple extends Fruit {
public void setTasteType(String taste) {
tasteType = taste;
}
}

Also do note that the two pieces of code are in different packages!

Upon compiling the Apple class I get the following error:
Apple.java:4: error: tasteType has private access in Fruit
tasteType = taste;
^

What I don't understand is this: I've given a non-abstract implementation to the "setTasteType" method in the Apple class and clearly setTasteType should have the authority to modify the private instance variables of Fruit. But it turns out I'm wrong.

Reading Class Files And Search For Access To Blacklisted Classes?

Oct 14, 2014

I am currently building a Plugin system for an application and I wanted to add a little security feature.

I have read many tutorials on this and they basically all came down to the same answer:

"Its complicated: You need a custom class loader and security manager and ... and even then its still tricky"

So I thought, before I load the classes dynamically I will simply read the class files. Why bother with a SecurityManager or ClassLoader if I can simply whitelist all allowed classes and search for all illegal Class access before I even load anything.

Exchange Between Classes And Methods

Apr 14, 2014

I need to create a Dog class that represents a dog. Then, there are 2 different methods that in the end will each represent one dog each. Each printout will show the Name, Breed, Age, and Age in Human Years. Right now I'm having trouble trying to move methods in between each class. Here's the first class.

import java.util.Scanner;
public class Dog { //no main method
static Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
//writeObject method
public static void writeObject(String name, String breed, int age) {
System.out.println("Enter the dog's name, breed, and age: ");

Scanner Class - Can't Seem To Access Methods

May 9, 2014

I have two classes built for this assignment. One with getters, setters and constructor and a test class. The test class works fine up until the point when the user wants to (M)odify an employee that he/she built with the loadEmployee method. What happens is I need to enter multiple "M" inputs before anything pops up, and when something pops up, it's the displayMenu instead of modifyEmployee method. I imagine it has something to do with the amount of sc.nextLine()

import java.util.Scanner; // utilize scanner via console
import java.text.NumberFormat; // allows numbers to be format in form of currency
//Example of "big loop" in main to repeat using a No Trip (0,N) test first
public class EmployeeTest {
// space provided to make code easier on eyes...

JavaFX 2.0 :: Using Events For Additional Mouse Buttons

Mar 14, 2015

Is there a possibility to use events for additional mouse buttons, like the next or previous mouse buttons, in javafx? If I use the setOnMousePressed event on a node, it only throws an event for the "PRIMARY" "SECONDARY" and "MIDDLE" buttons.

node.setOnMousePressed(new EventHandler<MouseEvent>() {
      @Override public void handle(MouseEvent mouseEvent) {
          System.err.println("mouse button: " + mouseEvent.getButton());
     }
});

If I use this java application [URL] .... it is also possible to throw events for the next or previous mouse buttons of the mouse. But not in my javafx application.

JavaFX 2.0 :: Buttons In ListView Not Firing OnAction

Jun 2, 2014

I have an app that was working with JavaFX 2 on JDK 7 but seems to no longer work in JavaFX 8 on JDK 8.  The story is that I have a ListView where I have provided my own CellFactory.  Within the class that extends ListCell, in the updateItem() method, I create an HBox that contains some text and a new button.

I register an onAction() callback for the button.  The end result should be a list with entries which contain buttons and when a button is clicked, the onAction() callback is invoked.  However, when I run it and click the button, the callback is NOT being fired.  This exact code was working on JavaFX 2 and JDK 7.

I have a Dialog with no buttons (the dialog pane contains some graphic elements which act as my buttons). I show the dialog and try to click the close window button on the dialogs title bar, and the dialog does not close! I read the docs and it appears that only dialogs that have one or more buttons can be abnormally closed (and only under certain well defined sensible conditions). How can I abnormally close a dialog with no buttons?

Returning Values Between Two Classes With Methods

Feb 4, 2015

I have a very standard Lab assignment. It's probably been seen a lot. I wrote the first part not realizing I had to write a second class to do use the methods. I'm not sure how to change my program to call methods from my second class instead of doing all my calculations with user input in my first class.

Here's the first class' code:

package tickets;
//Imports classes used for "Ticket" application.
import java.util.*;
import java.text.DecimalFormat;
public class Tickets {

[Code] ......

The code is obviously incomplete. I have not tried to compile, nor would I expect it to compile right. I'm not sure how to move my calculations from the first class shown above into my second class and use them as methods.

Implementing Classes Instead Of Extending To Get Methods?

Sep 20, 2014

Basically I want to make a class called library, but I don't want to make an interface because I actually want to define the methods. I think I can only use abstract classes but not really sure how to use those. But I still have a problem, I want to create a Map that classes implementing Library class have to have in their code, and the Map will be a HashMap with <String, ParentClassHere>, so basically let's say I make a class called Car, implemeing Library to the Car class would create a Map library = new HashMap<String, Car>. Can I do something like this? And also include methods to get values and set values to the library Map?

Using Accessor Methods To Access Data From Another Class

May 6, 2014

I have been asked to write a program with 3 classes(an interface, a store and a product class) and I have been going ok until I need to display data on the interface that is held in the product class. At the moment the code will compile fine but when I run the program and try to use the writeOutput() method I get a stack overflow error.

I realise now that it is because of a non-terminating recursive call, however I can not think of a solution on how to fix the problem. And just to clarify, what I am aiming to do is have the MatesTerminal class display the data for name that is stored in the Product class(I have no way of determining which product to display at this time, so I would like to be able to display the data for all three products if possible). Anyway this is what I have so far:

The method from the MatesTerminal Class:

private void writeOutput() {
int productChoice;
Scanner console = new Scanner(System.in);

Additional Methods From Specific Classes That Implement Interface

Jan 8, 2014

I am writing a game in Java for Android (although my question isn't Android or Game Dev specific).

I have a SceneManager class and a Scene interface and then various other classes that implement the Scene interface (Code at the end of this post).

Basically, in my MainGame class (which also implements the Scene Interface for Touch Event capturing purposes) I hold the bulk of my game code. Methods in this class are then called from my Level classes. (most of these are needed in all levels so it makes sense to hold them here and call them from the levels to eliminate unnecessary code duplication)

So, I have Level1, Level2......... Level20 classes which all implement Scene.

Now, the problem comes because in only 2 of my Levels something can happen (that can't in the other 18) and I need to run a response method in these 2 levels (the method isn't exactly the same, the response to this event happening is different for both levels).

To run common methods from my classes, I use my Scene Manager like this:

SceneManager.getInstance().getCurrentScene().updateLogic();
SceneManager.getInstance().getCurrentScene().render();

(The above is from my gameloop) - So it will run the updateLogic(); and render(); methods from whichever is the current scene (Level).

Scene is changed like so:

SceneManager.getInstance().setCurrentScene(LevelX);

This works great as all Level's have an updateLogic(); and render(); method.

So from my mainGame class, I am doing something like : (pseudo code)

public void checkIfSomethingHappened(){
if (something happens){
if (currentLevel==5){
Level5.response();}

[Code]....

The above would be called from my 2 level classes. So something like:

MainGame.checkIfSomethingHappened(); //Called in addition to the normal methods that make up that level

I don't really want to have this (second) 'if' statement here in the middle of my performance critical game loop.

What I'm after is something like this:

if (something happens){
SceneManager.getInstance().getCurrentScene().response();
}

However, this would require me to put stubs in the other 18 classes.

I'm thinking there must be a way to do this as the SceneManager already knows the current scene so it seems a waste checking it again via an if (or switch) statement. What is the best way to do this without having to put stubs into classes that don't require this method?

Month Class With Constructors And Getter / Setter Methods To Access Attributes

Jul 22, 2014

Write a class Month that represents one of the twelve months of the year. It should have three attributes for

the name of the month,

the number of days in the month, and

the birthstone.

Also add constructors and getter/setter methods to access the attributes.

You may use the following code to test your class.

Java Code:

import java.util.*;
public class Month
{
// ADD CODE HERE!!!
public static void main(String[] args)
{
Month[] months = new Month[12];

[Code] ....

So what I have added so far is (under public class month { :)

Java Code:

String monthName, monthBirthStone;
int monthDays;
public Month (String name, int days, String birthstone)
{
monthName = name;
monthBirthStone=birthstone;
monthDays=days;
} mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

So I believe that is the constructor. I still do not understand several things:

What would I need the getter and setter for?

I tested it using just the above code, and using month 1 I got:

Month@5a1cfb56

This makes sense as I obviously didn't do anything in order to get it in a String format for the array. But I do not understand this still - how would I get the constructor to output a string (to then be in the array?)

JavaFX 2.0 :: How To Access Application From Controller

Sep 25, 2014

I do Java for decades, but am a FXML beginner. Currently I do FXMLLoader.load(fxmlFile) in Application.start(), which is working well. My Application instance is creating a background thread in Application.init() which feeds several custom application properties with incoming data taken from a remote model (wrapping a sensor hardware). Some of my windows shall later be able to access those properties. So the question is: How can I inject my Application instance into the FXMLLoader-created controller instances auto-bound to the FXML-created Scene instances?

JavaFX 2.0 :: How To Access The Formatted Text Of A TableCell

Nov 20, 2014

Our users want us to build the following ontop of a TableView: When a key was typed, the row selection shall change to the first row showing a cell in a given column whose getText() starts with the typed letter. Such a functionality is known from lots of other software, like the Windows file explorer, where you can type a key to jump to the first file starting with that letter. It shouldn't be too complex to build, but due to the separation of "items" and "formatted cell text" it actually is... :-(

Using TableColumn.getCellData(S) we can access the item, but at that point, we don't want to repeat the formatting just for the sake of this functionality. We have set a cell factory providing this format, so the view looks great, but how can we access that formatted String programmatically to jump to the right row at a later time?
