How To Check String For Exactly 2 Capital Letters And 1 Space
Jul 23, 2014
I started using Java a couple of days ago, If you haven't guessed I want to see if the user is typing a full name or not, but I'm actually not too concerned with any more complexity than I mentioned in the title. It's ok if an input like "GLba b" comes out positive.

Write a GUI program to convert all lowercase letters in a string to uppercase letters, and vice versa.
For example, Alb34eRt will be converted to aLB34ErT.

I decided to code this quiz I took in class about asking the user to input a string and the code is suppose to check for upper case letters. If a upper case letter is found, it should increase a count by one. Once the check is done, it should display the number of uppercase letters. For some reason I am getting this weird compile error stating that symbols can't be found...
Java Code:
import java.util.*;
import java.lang.*;
public class StringCheck{
public static void main(String[] args){
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("please enter a string: " );
String s = input.nextLine();
[Code] ......

How can I write a method that takes a string with duplicates letters and returns the same string which does not contain duplicates. For example, if you pass it radar, it will return rad. Also i would like to know how can I Write a method that takes as parameters the secret word and the good guesses and returns a string that is the secretword but has dashes in the places where the player has not yet guessed that letter. For example, if the secret word is radar and the player has already guessed the good guesses letters r and d, the method will return r-d-r.

I have an assessment for college, the part of my code that im struggling with is the part where the user enter their first name followed by a space and then their second name. I m using ---------------fullname = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("enter your firstname followed by a space then your second name " ); ------------- to capture this. the issue is if the user only enter 1 name I need to output an error. the issue is I cant find a way to tell if the user entered a second name. This is what I have so far:
public void makename() {
// makes an inputbox to ask their name
fullname = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("enter your firstname followed by a space then your second name " );
//separates the first and second name into 2 strings in order to make the username
[code]....
The problem is it accepts anything I type in without causing an error. What should I type in to stop this? ive tried anything but I cant find a way to tell if a surname has been entered or not.

I want to make a method that takes a word and then checks if the word can be created from available letters. For example, if a word "johnson" can be created by using letters "jashoqwnon".
Now my goal is to make sure that if available letters contain a letter from the word, that letter is put into a String called result and then erased from the list of given letters. So, "johnson" and "jashoqwn" would produce the result "johns" and leave "aqw" unused.
Now the problem that I am facing is that I can't get Java not to use the same letter twice. So "johnson" and "jashoqwn" still gives "johnson".
I've tried everything in my power but I am missing something. Here is my code.
public static String makeAWord(String word, String letters){
String result = "";
for(int i = 0; i < word.length(); i++){
for(int j = 0; j < letters.length() ; j++){

Here is the problem:
Start with the tree.java program (Listing 8.1) and modify it to create a binary tree from a string of letters (like A, B, and so on) entered by the user. Each letter will be displayed in its own node. Construct the tree so that all the nodes that contain letters are leaves. Parent nodes can contain some non-letter symbol like +. Make sure that every parent node has exactly two children. Don’t worry if the tree is unbalanced. Note that this will not be a search tree; there’s no quick way to find a given node. You may end up with something like this:
It also says all Letters must be Leaves
Now I had it almost similar to that picture, but it wasn't right. So ive been working on it but im getting some very strange (and frustrating) output from the following methods.
Ive included the display method just for reference. The book told me to use it so I haven't edited it. I believe my main issue is with my (incomplete) insert() method. The output goes into an infinite loop despite having a return statement break the while loop when a character is inserted.
The way I see to solve the problem is just add a (+) whenever a new subtree needs to be created. Say I add A and B, then it first creates a subtree at the root with a (+) and afterwards lists A and B as its leaves. If I insert a C, it should be able to simply move to the right child of the root and deposit the C there.

Write a method named secondHalfLetters that accepts a string as its parameter and returns an integer representing how many of letters in the string come from the second half of the alphabet (that is, have values of 'n' through 'z' inclusive). Compare case-insensitively, such that uppercase values of 'N' through 'Z' also count. For example, the call secondHalfLetters("ruminates") should return 5 because the 'r', 'u', 'n', 't', and 's' come from the second half of the alphabet. You may assume that every character in the string is a letter.

I'm trying to come up with a method that would validate each turn a player makes. For a turn to be valid, it has to only contain numbers from 0 to 3(inclusive) and at least one digit must not be 0. Here is what I`ve come up with so far. For example, with "303" as the number and "101" as the turn, the turn would be valid and my method should return true, but it does not.
public static boolean turnIsValid (String number, String turn ){
boolean rep=false;
int pos1=0;
char min='0';
char max='3';
while(number.length()==turn.length()&&pos1<turn.length()){

I have an assignment and one of the prompts is to do a binary search on an array if and only if the array of Strings is sorted. The binary search part I think I have completed, but it is the sorted array check that is throwing everything off. If the array is already sorted, return true; else, return false.
// Check if the array is sorted
public static boolean isSorted(String[] arr) {
//for (int i = 0; i < arr.length-1; i++)
//{
//if (arr[i].compareTo(arr[i+1]) > 0)
//return false;

String[] arrSorted = arr;

I have a number of objects stored in an ArrayList called inventory. Let's say I have two objects inside.
inventory.add(new Lamborghini(2011, "aventador", 411.3, false));
inventory.add(new Lamborghini(2012, "sesto elemento", 512.3, true));
I am making a function to search through the whole inventory to see if any of the Lamborghini object has a certain model name such as aventador, diablo, etc....
This is what I have but I figured there's a big mistake when I make it true / false; it's making it going through the list and what's return is the last one instead of saying there's such match in the whole list or not.
public boolean hasCarModel(String modelName){
boolean exist = false;
for (Lamborghini lambo : inventory){
String carModelName = lambo.getModelName();
if(carModelName.equalsIgnoreCase(modelName)){
[Code] ....
I figured if I add break; under exist = true; it'll work because as soon as it found one match then it'll turn to true and break out the loop but I don't think this is the best way to do it right?

I have to check a String input from the user in the form of firstName lastName (i.e. John Smith). I have to check for an exception called NonAlphabeticCharacterException that gets thrown if there is anything but a number in that string. This is what I have right now but should I create an array of char for the alphabet and then check the whole string for non alphabetic characters?
for(int i=0; i<name.length(); i++) {
if()){
throw new NonAlphabeticCharactersException("Non-alphabetic character found");
}

I have doubts in string declaration. As I know we can declare string in two ways:
1. String a=new String("Hello");
2. String b="Hello";
What is exact difference between them? Another thing is when I check (a==b) it retuns me false, but when I check a.equals(b) it returns me with true. Why So?
