I am looking for a way to create a method with the initial state in while loop, which will count the length of each word in a string using I want the output to be something along the lines of:
hello world how are you
There are 0 words of length 0
There are 0 words of length 1
There are 0 words of length 2
There are 3 words of length 3
There are 0 words of length 4
There are 2 words of length 5
This is my code so far it sort of does the job but not the way i want it too
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.StringTokenizer;
public class Brown_Matthew_13117002{
public static int count(String s, int len){
int result=0;
StringTokenizer st=new StringTokenizer(s,"[ ,;]");
[Code] ....
The output would end up being :
hello
There are 0 words of length 0
world
There are 0 words of length 1
how
There are 0 words of length 2
are
There are 3 words of length 3
you
There are 0 words of length 4

The goal of this code was to create a program using main method java to analysis a piece text which has been entered from a user.
They do this by entering the text into a scanner which is then analysed by the program. The analysis is to produce word frequency, for example " This is a test" produces this results:
This is a test
1 letter words: 1
2 letter words: 1
3 letter words: 0
4 letter words: 2
5 letter words: 0
The bit that I'm stuck on is producing a mean/average, My mind telling to divide
counts.length
by
str.length
But I'm not the Best at java and I've tried to implement this but all I get are errors.
Code:
import java.util.Scanner;
public class While_Loop {
public static void main (String[] args) {
while(true){
[Code] .....

I think I need to use string.split instead of stringtokenizer and the while loop is incorrect it needs to loop equal to the number of letters in the longest word. But how to do either of these ?

Create a program to input the length and width of a rectangle and calculate and print the perimeter and area of the rectangle. To do this you will need to write a Rectangle class and a separate runner class. Your program should include instance variables, constructors, an area method, a perimeter method, a toString method, accessor and mutator methods, and user input. Your runner class should include 3 Rectangle objects. One default rectangle, one coded rectangle, and one user input rectangle. All methods should be tested in the runner class.
This is my code:
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Rectangle {
double length;
double width;
public Rectangle() {
[Code] ...
What have I done??? I have created this program using the few different resources with which I am supplied, but I don't understand the resources.

I am trying to make a program so that the user has to enter a number for the width and length and it will give the area and perimeter:
import java.util.* ;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
public class jframe extends JFrame {
private static final int WIDTH = 400;
private static final int HEIGHT = 300;
[Code] ....
It is giving me an error saying that the ExitButtonHandler and ebHandler do not have classes but I don't understand why.

This program is for a swimming pool filling service company. They charge 2 cents per gallon and $50 per hour to fill a pool. The truck can fill at a rate of 730 gallons per hour.
Create the Pool class that calculates the cost to fill a pool based on it's Shape, length, width and depth. (Input order is S L W D)
The pool class will need data fields for String shape, double length, double width, double depth, static double GallonsPerSqFoot = 7.4805, static double price per gallon = .02, static double FillingFeePerHour = 50.0, and static double FillingRate = 730gal/hr.
Create a No-Arg constructor and a constructor that accepts the non-static values, and has the methods: getShape, getLength, getWidth, getDepth, getGallons, getHours, getFillingFeePerHour, getHourlyCost and getTotalCost.
At the end of the class, create a main() method that asks for the input and returns the output based on the Pool class gets.. methods.
The shape options are oblong or rectangle. (A round pool would be oblong with the same width and height, a square pool would have the same width and height)
Formulas:
Rectangle cubic ft = length * width * depth.
Oblong cubic ft= ((Math.PI * Math.pow(width/2,2)* depth) +((length-width) * width * depth))
Gallons = cubic ft * 7.4805.
hours = total gallons/730.
Total cost = (total Gallons * .02)+(hours * $50)
Example Output
An oblong pool 18.00 feet long by 12.00 feet wide and 5.00 feet deep will use 6923.10 gallons of water and take 9.48 hours to fill. The total cost will be 612.65.
Here is my code:
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.*;
public class Pool
{
private String poolshape1 = "oblong";
private String poolshape1 = "rectangle";
private double length;
private double width;
private double depth;
private static double GallonsPerSqFoot = 7.4805;

I have a project requiring me to build a program having a user input 3 words, sort them alphabetically and output the middle word. I have done some searching and seem to only come back with results for sorting 2 words. I so far have code to get the user input but I am completely lost as to how to sort them alphabetically.
import java.util.Scanner; //The Scanner is in the java.util package.
public class MiddleString {
public static void main(String [] args){
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); //Create a Scanner object.
String str1, str2, str3;
System.out.println("Please enter three word words : "); //Prompt user to enter the three words
[Code]...
we havnt done arrays yet and I THINK i have to do compareTo.....how to use it?

I am having a lot of trouble with this lab. basically I have to make a text processor to read in code put it into a file and output the contents of the input file in alphabetical order one word per line. I have to reference the string varaibles input_filename and output_filename.
import java.io.FileInputStream;
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
import java.io.FileReader;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.PrintWriter;
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.io.File;
public class TextProcessor {
[Code] ....
these are the guidelines to said lab:
1. In the main method define two Strings called input_filename and output_filename. I will be setting these Strings to my own file names for testing your code, so make sure you get these variable names correct, and that you use them properly in the following steps.
2. Read in the text contents of the file referenced by input_filename.
3. Split the contents of the input text into separate tokens, using whitespace as a delimiter.
4. Lower case the tokens.
5. OPTIONAL: remove punctuation
6. Alphabetize the tokens.
7. Using output_filename, write the alphabetized tokens to an output file, one token per line.
8. Be sure to close file streams - no resource leaks!
9. Use methods to separate functionality in your program where possible

Consider the following recursive method that calculates the greatest common divisor using Euclidean method.
PHP Code:
public static int GCD ( int x , int y )
{
if ( y == 0 )
return x;
else if ( x >= y && y > 0)
return GCD ( y , x % y );
else return GCD ( y , x );
}
Trace the above method for x=32 and y=46

This specific assignment requires me to write a program that calculates the total sales after each football game. There are 4 types of tickets: box, sideline, premium, and general admission. After each game, data is stored in a file... then output the number of tickets sold and total sale amount. Format your output with 2 decimal places.
Okay I know there is a I/O section and wasnt sure where to post this. I need some insight on how to use file input and output as well ... Here is my program:
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
import java.text.DecimalFormat;
public class ticketsSold

I want to make a method that takes a word and then checks if the word can be created from available letters. For example, if a word "johnson" can be created by using letters "jashoqwnon".
Now my goal is to make sure that if available letters contain a letter from the word, that letter is put into a String called result and then erased from the list of given letters. So, "johnson" and "jashoqwn" would produce the result "johns" and leave "aqw" unused.
Now the problem that I am facing is that I can't get Java not to use the same letter twice. So "johnson" and "jashoqwn" still gives "johnson".
I've tried everything in my power but I am missing something. Here is my code.
public static String makeAWord(String word, String letters){
String result = "";
for(int i = 0; i < word.length(); i++){
for(int j = 0; j < letters.length() ; j++){

I am trying to calculate a fine in a PoliceOfficer object with method calls to a ParkedCar and ParkingMeter object. The word problem is:
The fine is $25 for the first hour or part of it and $20 for every additional hour of part of it.
My code is:
public class PoliceOfficer
public static final int PARKING_FINE1 = 25;
public static final int PARKING_FINE2 = 20;
public static final int NUMBER_OF_MINUTES_OVER_PARKED = 60;
public double calculateFine(){
double calculateFine = 0;

Write method distance, which calculates the distance between two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2). All numbers and returned values should be of type double. Incorporate this method into an program that enable the user to enter the coordinates of the points, then calculate and display the distance by calling the method –distance.
I've tried numerous times to make it work and I'm on the right path, however I'm missing some things in the code to make my results look like this later on, which I've attached onto this post.

I have built a binary tree, from a file. In each node, I am storing each word as a string, and an int frequency for each time the word occurs. For the assignment, I need to find how many words occur only once in the file. I wrote the program, but for some reason I am getting a number different from what my professor is expecting.
As far as I know, this file has loaded into the tree correctly, because all of my other answers in the assignment are correct. What am I doing wrong?
public void findUnique() {

private int findUniqueWords(Node subTree, int uniqueCount) {

I have understood my programming class up to this point and now I have been given a lab that I can't figure out for the life of me. Here what I have to do: Write a program that will call a method (called f) to calculate the following function" f(x)=(x^2)-16...this is what the output should be:
x f(x)
1 -15
2 -12
3 -7
4 0
5 9
6 20
7 33
8 48
9 65
10 84
I guess it also has to print this output in a table even though my professor never mentioned it. Usually
public class Lab12 {
public static int f(int x)
{
return x*x-16;
[code]....

The intentions of this program is to prompt a user to enter a file name, and then reads the file. The program will prompt the user to enter a word that needs to be corrected. So lets say I have a text file containing "My name is OP and I Like goind to the Park!" I want to change "goind" to "going",
Now, my second method "isSimilar" executes a similar word with more than one same letter and same length, but I dont know how to execute that whole thing in my third method "correctThisLine" . How I can call that isSimilar method and read in that text file and change that word into that?
