Floats / Doubles And Currency

Mar 8, 2014

Just done a quick test to try and figure out the difference between floats and doubles.I made a quick program which outputs the result of 3.3 * 2 as both a float and a double.

I assumed since a float is the larger and more precise of the two data types that there would be more numbers after the decimal point, however this was not the case, it was in fact the double which had more numbers after the decimal point. Result was as follows:

Float: 29.699999
Double: 29.7

BTW for the above code I simply had a few text fields and a button with the following code:

Java Code:

textBox3.setText("" + Float.parseFloat(textBox1.getText()) * Float.parseFloat(textBox2.getText()));
textBox6.setText("" + Double.parseDouble(textBox1.getText()) * Double.parseDouble(textBox2.getText())); mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

Also, as these are limited to a certain amount of numbers im thinking there must be a more precise way for currency, if so what would I use for that? I suppose what im trying to figure out is what data type to use in different scenarios? When to use integer, float, double and long.

Java Dicing System With Currency

Jul 31, 2014

I have been working on making a Java application for the Game RuneScape. My goal is to make an Application to where you register on the application and it saves the information in a file. I am also looking to make it so you can transfer money from Runescape to your Account on my Application by submitting a ticket. When you submit a ticket you get assisted by one of the moderators, they trade you in the game and take the money, and then they take that money out of their current account. Admins are allowed to give moderators money via their account or another method. My issue is creating the ticket system. I want to be able to do this all via the application. So basically what i have currently for the application is a chat room, with different rooms available to go into by the users. So I need to make the tickets show up only to Moderators and Admins in the general chat room.

Throw Exception In Overridden Method

Mar 19, 2015

I am practicing OCPJP ....

import java.lang.*;
class InvalidValueException extends IllegalArgumentException {}
class InvalidKeyException extends IllegalArgumentException {}
class BaseClass {
void foo() throws IllegalArgumentException {
throw new IllegalArgumentException();

[Code] .....

Which one of the following options correctly describes the behavior of this program? And the answer is (definitely) --> The program will print : InvalidKeyException exception, but when i saw the explanation, it tells

It is not necessary to provide an Exception thrown by a method when the method is overriding a method defined with an exception (using the throws clause).

I don't know, but i think it will compiled because the Exception that is thrown by the foo method in DeriDeri class is inherited from unchecked exception.. so it is not necessary to declare throws statement on its method.. and if the exception was checked exception the answer must be different right?

Convert Currency Instance To Integer

Jul 26, 2014

I am working with a JFormattedTextField. After adding the text of the FormattedTextField to an LinkedList i want to read it out and sum it up. So I have a problem to convert the String to and integer...

Example:

23.00 - to 23.00
+ 11.00 - to 11.00
--> 34.00

I have tried it with splitting the string but it didn't work. How to do it?

Covariant Return In Overridden Method

Mar 5, 2015

For starters here is my code:

Java Code: class A {
int x=5;
}
class B extends A {
int x=6;
}
public class CovariantTest {
public A getObject() {

[Code] ....

And this is the output I get:

sub
5

I am unable to figure out how this is outputting 5 instead of 6. The getObject method of SubCovariantTest is obviously the one being called, and it returns a new B(). So why am I getting class A's x value? I thought since I was getting a B object returned that I would get B's x value.

Create A Class That Convert Currency

Feb 25, 2014

I want to create a class that converts currency. I stored 2 conversion rate as constant (final) variables. In the main method, I ask the user to enter the amount in US dollars that they want to convert. Then I ask the user to enter the currencyType ("Bitcoin" or "Chuck E Cheese").

However I am stuck in the while loop:

I want to use a while loop that basically does this: If the user entered anything else ( not Bitcoin or Chuck E Chesse), then tell the user to try again, and keep reading Strings until they enter a correct currency type. If the user 3 consecutive incorrect currency types, then exit the program.

Take a look at what I have so far.. when I run the program it does not quite do what I want it to do Also, there's something wrong with one of my if statements and I want to figure out how to fix it.

Java Code:

import java.util.Scanner;
public class CurrencyConverter
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
System.out.println("----------------------------------");
System.out.println(" Currency Converter");
System.out.println("----------------------------------");

[Code]...

This is how I want my project to look like:

Why Overridden Doesn't Apply To Instance Variables

Mar 15, 2014

why overridden doesn't apply to variables. However, instance variables are stored inside the object.I ran below program and expected to print "two" but it gets printed "one".

String s = "one";
}
class Cont extends SupCont {
public static void main(String a[]) {
String s = "two";
SupCont c = new Cont();

Referring To Overridden Method From Supertype Reference?

May 14, 2015

If a method is overridden but you use a polymorphic (supertype) reference to refer to the subtype object with the overriding method, the compiler assumes you're calling the supertype version of the method.

is this true? maybe i'm misunderstanding it, but i thought the JVM looks at the object at run time and checks the object type. the context of the quote is about checked exceptions, but it seems like the statement should stand regardless of context. but this doesn't back up my experience. for example:

public class Test{
public void print(){
System.out.println("Super");
} public static void main(String[] args){
Test t = new SubTest();

[Code] ....

Will invoke the subclass method. like i said, maybe i'm missing something.

Calculating Change In Denominations Of Currency Error

May 10, 2014

So I currently have working code that calculates the denominations that I need when change is displayed. The problem is that it seems to be missing one cents every time. So if my change prints out $12.35, it will end up being 1 - ten, 2 - ones, 1 - quarter, 1 - nickle, and 4 - pennies rather than 2 nickles. or 1 dime This happens for any dollar amount unless it is even cash and no change, or the change calculates to where there doesn't need to be a penny. Just an FYI, this code is being used in a GUI panel program if it seems strange in anyway.

int change1 = (int) ((total - realTotal)*100);
num100 = change1 / 10000;
change1 = change1 % 10000;
String dollar1;
dollar1 = String.valueOf(num100);

Selection Of Invocation Of Overridden Method During Constructor Chaining

May 28, 2014

I don't understand, why when in the constructor of the superclass A the method init() is called (line 4), the overridden version of the subclass is invoked (line 26) and not the superclass version (line 7):

class A {
public A () {
init();
}
public void init() {
System.out.println("test");

[Code] ....

I would have guessed that above code prints

test
1

But instead you get a NPE (because when the constructor of B is invoked

public static void main(String[] args) {
new B();
}

Then there is first the implicit call to super:

public B() {
s = " ";
init();
}

Which is the constructor of A:

public A () {
init();
}

But here now this init() method is not the version of A ( public void init() {
System.out.println("test");
}) but the overriden version of the subclass (B): public void init() {
System.out.println(s+=s.length());
}...

Which throws an NPE of course, because the initialization of s has not occured yet (it happens only after the implicit call to super() has finished (see public B() {
s = " ";
init();
}))

Method Overridden In Method Parameter?

Jul 20, 2014

I was following a tutorial for libGdx and suddenly became confused by the following syntax:

up.addListener(new ClickListener(){
public void clicked(InputEvent event, float x, float y){
position.y += 1f;
//currentFrame = animation.getKeyFrame(12);
}
});

"up" is basically a text Button:

TextButton up = new TextButton("up", textButtonStyle);

and .addListener is just one of the methods "TextButton" has (actually I think its inherited from "Button" but that doesn't matter).

Basically my question is what's going on inside the parentheses? From what I see its a new instance of "ClickListener" but then suddenly they override an actual method within. Is this simply just a way to override a method from the ClickListener class or is it something else?

Class Path With Windows 7

May 28, 2010

I've just got a new computer and i tried to set the class path the way i did with windows xp but it's not working. This is what i have done. I added a Path variable to user variables and added C: Program Files (x86)Javajdk1.6.0_20/bin as the variable value. But when i got to command prompt and type javac HelloWorld.java it just tells me javac is not recognised as an internal or external command.

Also another problem is after trying this and it not working i tried to add a path to the system variables. I added a new path variable but i think once i did that it deleted the one that was already there. Is that going to mess up my computer? What the default path variable for windows 7 is?i've got the right destination as i typed cd to change directory and when i typed C: Program Files (x86)Javajdk1.6.0_20/bin it changed to that. And i noticed if i typed in the destination wrong its just made an error.

Two Windows Are Being Made Of Game

Jan 19, 2014

I have a game which is very simple: it is two images, and one needs to reach the other. Once it does, it resets. I have a class which holds the two images, and another which holds the game. My images class extends my game class. The problem I am having is that when I run the program, not one, but two frames appear. One is the perfect game, working perfectly, and the other is the game without images. I want the one that is the game without images to simply stop appearing. I believe it is appearing because my class that displays the image is extending the game class, but I can't not extend it because if I do I get a whole lot of bugs and errors.

Image class:
import java.awt.BorderLayout;
import java.awt.Dimension;
import java.awt.Graphics;
import java.awt.Image;
import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;
import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
import javax.swing.*;
