Swing/AWT/SWT :: Controls Not Updating Until Method Is Completely Finished
Dec 30, 2014I have this method that does several RegEx queries along with a lot of searching and replacing of text, and each regex search / replace takes some time and a total of maybe two minutes for all of them to finish up. So I added a ProgressBar to my JavaFX form and I added code after each step to simply use the ProgressBar.setProgress method by a factor of 10% each step ... so the code would resemble something like this:
do a regex query
if it finds things then do a replaceAll method on the string being searched
ProgressBar.setProgress(.1)
do another RegexQuery
If it finds stuff, so a replaceAll method
ProgressBar.setProgress(.2)
etc...
What is happening is that the progress bar will not actually paint any progress until AFTER the entire method is done executing. So from the users perspective, they click on the button and the program appears to freeze until its all done with that method at which point it instantly changes the progress bar to the last value I set ...
So the desired effect is simply not working, and I don't know why.
I tried changing (as in replacing the progress bar with a different control) the progress bar value settings with updating text in a text box on the form, and even that didn't display any of the text messages until AFTER the procedure was done executing at which point, all of the text logs appeared at one time instead of gradually adding text to the box in increments as the method executed.So it FEELS like any time a method is actually running, the JavaFX scene simply freezes until the method is done running. And it doesn't matter if I change the progress bars value directly or put it into its own method which gets called throughout the execution of the regex method ... either way, nothing actually happens on the form until the software is done executing all of the procedures called and then it comes back to a "resting" state...
I tried simplifying it by making a single method that does two things ... it updates the progress bar and then it waits for 1 second. Then it increments a variable then updates the progress bar, then waits a second, thinking to myself that 1 second pause would give it time to update the progress bars value but even that little method would not work.
Here is the test method I created:

Even that little piece of code will not actually show any changes in the progress bar until after its done looping at which point, the progress bar is filled to 100%, but I never see the first 9 changes in the progress bar within that for next loop.
Unique ID / Not Too Long
Apr 15, 2014I am looking for a program to generate a unique alphanumerical identifier that is not too long; for example would start out with 6 digits like a licence plate or a postal code ex: AAA001 and use up all the possible combinations until 999ZZZ (just an example) and then when the possibilities are exhausted a 7th digit is added and so on. It matters not if they are sequential, the identifier just needs to be unique and not be too hard to remember (also i don't want to use ip adress or any personal identification). How I can accomplish this using java.

Oct 22, 2014Say I have a class called ClassA which I want to hold my data. Now inside ClassA want to hold instances of a class lets call ClassB. So far we are here.

However I want to have multiple extensions of ClassB which have UNIQUE static variables.

Address Book - Unique Object Names
Aug 22, 2014I found out what my next java class project is, and i am trying to get a head start on it. It is a simple address book. it needs to have 4 choices that get cycled through until quit is chosen:
1. add business contact
2. add personal contact
3. display contacts
4. quit
I have made an abstract contact class with a personal subclass and business subclass(all 3 are required). they have all been made, with set/get methods(the wonders of encapsulation and polymorphism have finally hit home!). The main program needs to add a new subclass object when chosen, and it needs to accept and store contacts by type
So, i am figuring 2 object arraylists for business/personal.
My question is: how do you create an object without having a name for it already programmed? Does it even need to have a unique name, since it would be stored in a seperate index and/or arraylist?

Create Unique Constructors And Variables For Every Subclass
Sep 10, 2014I have a class called Sprite which extends its several subclasses. Therefore, there are a lot of different Sprite classes, the thing is however, most of those subclasses have unique types of variables which I want to only be included in those particular subclasses, not anywhere else. For instance, I might have a variable measuring distance in one subclass, and in another subclass there might be a height variable inherent. I don't want the first subclass to have both variables, neither the second or the main class. Because before I initialize my subclasses, I need to create the constructors of those subclasses in the main Sprite class first because it doesn't have the unique variables which those classes consist of. How do I prevent that? Now I have to create the unique constructors and variables for every subclass, when I only want them in their associated classes.

Make A Calculator Using Java GUI
Jul 29, 2014I am trying to make a calculator using Java GUI. I've managed to make an ActionListener and add it to a button, but I've made an error in my code that I'm unsure of how to solve. Because of how I've written the code, only one number can be placed in the text field. For example, the an ActionListener for the three button on the calculator was added to the button, but no matter how many times the user presses the button, only one 3 will appear in the text field. As you can see, because the compiler forces the String variable to be final, so when the user presses the button, the code simply shows how a space character and three character would look like, because the String variable can't change. How do I write my code so that every time the user presses the button, a character is added to the text field?
