View RepliesI had to make a program that allowed the user to enter the number of students and the students names and grades and then print out the name with the grade in descending order. right now I only have it where it prints the names out in descending order. how do I get it the print out with the grade?
Here is my code
import java.util.*;
public class Grades {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.print("Enter the number of students: ");
int numofstudents = input.nextInt();

I am sorting an array in ascending and descending order. I am using the nethods in Arrays as below
Arrays.sort(myArray)
I want to print both input and output array in sysout.
Object[] ipArray = [45,8,32,41,11,7];
Object[] opArray;
Object mArray = ipArray;
Arrays.sort(mArray); This is changing the ipArray too ?
How can I get my input array unmodified ?
How do u copy all the elements in an array eg A into another array eg B? This is the question:
An array A contains integers that first increase in value and then decrease in value,
For example, 17 24 31 39 44 49 36 29 20 18 13
It is unknown at which point the numbers start to decrease. Write efficient code to code to copy the numbers in A to another array B so that B is sorted in ascending order. Your code must take advantage of the way the numbers are arranged in A.
This is my program:
This is the error message:

I have an array that I filled with 30 random characters, but now I am trying to sort them in ascending order and the descending order using lambda expressions.
public class RandomCharacters {
public static void main(String args[]){
Random r =new Random();
char myarray[] = new char [30];
for (int i = 0 ; i < 30; i++)

I am trying to create a java program to sort an array in ascending and descending order. Here is the program I created :
import java.util.Arrays;
import java.util.Collections;
public class ArraySort
{
public static void main(String [] args) {
int [] num = {5,9,1,65,7,8,9};
Arrays.sort(num);
[Code]...
BUT I GET THE FOLLOWING EROOR ON COMPILATION
ArraySort.java:12: error: no suitable method found for reverseOrder(int[])
Arrays.sort(num,Collections.reverseOrder(num));

What's wrong with my program?
1. Create a program that will return the maximum and minimum numbers in the elements of ONE-dimensional integer array. Save it as MaxMin_OneDim.java
2. Create a program that will return the maximum and minimum numbers in the elements of each row in a TWO-dimensional integer array. Save it as MaxMin_TwoDim.java
3. Write a program PrintPattern which prompt a user to enter a number and prints the following patterns using nested loops (assumed user entered number is 8 output is:)
1 .... 87654321
12 .... 7654321
123 .... 654321
1234 .... 54321
12345 .... 4321
123456 .... 321
1234567 .... 21
12345678 .... 1
(Without the dots, i just put them to give spaces)
I have the following double linked list and I'm supposed to order it descending (reverse) using the printInReverse() method; since the list orders itself ascending when the numbers are added, how could I order it descending in this method? Here's the code without implementing descending/reversing methods:
package test;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class MyList {
private Scanner userInput;
private Integer selectedOption;
private MyListElement firstElement = null;
private boolean exitRequested = false;
[Code] ....
I tried to declare a previousElement variable but I didn't figure out how I'd do that.
So in my code, I have the user input a number, and the program will then display that element in the array (I've done this bit). However I need to write code to check that the user is entering a valid index number, and if they don't, I need to prompt them that the number they have entered is incorrect and let them retry, and I don't know how to.
This is my full code, I have added a comment underneath where I need to add the code:
import java.util.Arrays;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class StudentNames {
public static void main(String[] args) {
String[] names = new String[8];
Scanner s = new Scanner(System.in);
for (int i = 0; i < 8; i++) {

im trying to make a small program where the user enters their selection choice and it prints out the corresponding information. for example, if they choose "3", i want "3. Soup de Jour" to print out
import java.util.Scanner;
public class rest

I have a college question ask me to write a class StringRevert which does the following:
-prompting user for an interger n
-creating an array of n string
-repeatedly read character string from user input and store them in the array until end of array is reached or user input -quit(quit should not saved in array)
-print the string from array in reverse order, from last enter to first enter.
-assume user always supplie correct input
This is what I've done so far but how to get it working.
import java.util.Scanner;
public class StringRevert {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("enter value of n: ");
int n1 = in.nextInt();
String[] n = new String[n1];

a. Write a Java program to input 10 integer numbers into an array named fmax and determine the maximum value entered. Your program should contain only one loop, and the maximum should be determined as array element values are being input. (Hint: Set the maximum equal to the first array element, which should be input before the loop used to input the remaining array values.)
b. Repeat 1a, keeping track of both the maximum element in the array and the index number for the maximum. After displaying the numbers, display these two messages:
The maximum value is: _________
This is element number __________ in the list of numbers
Have your program display the correct values in place of the underlines in the messages.
c. Repeat 1b, but have your program locate the minimum value of the data entered.
I did parts a and b but for part see i just want to know if i did it correctly or not
import java.util.Scanner;
public class MinimumValueArray {
public static void main(String[] args) {
//Variable Declaration
Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in);
int size = 10;
[Code] ,.....
When I run it i get this The minimum value is 0.0
The element that holds the value is 0 right away. is this right for the minimum or am i supposed to enter values and it will display the minimum value like in parts a and b wit the maximum? will the minimum just always be 0 or ?
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.Arrays;
import java.util.List;
public class array
{
public static void main(String[] args)

Is there a way to write this, where, alpha is one array.
Write a program that declares an array "alpha" of 50 elements of type "double". Initialize the array so that the first 25 elements are equal to the square of the index variable and the last 25 elements are equal to three times the index variable. Output the array so that 10 elements per line are printed.
If I have an array of 50 integers, can I break that to read in lines of 10?
I need to put my scores in ascending order how do i do that?
public static void main(String[] args) {
char[][] answers = {
{'A', 'B', 'A', 'C', 'C', 'D', 'E', 'E', 'A', 'D'},
{'D', 'B', 'A', 'B', 'C', 'A', 'E', 'E', 'A', 'D'},
{'E', 'D', 'D', 'A', 'C', 'B', 'E', 'E', 'A', 'D'},
{'C', 'B', 'A', 'E', 'D', 'C', 'E', 'E', 'A', 'D'},

I have been doing a program that allows the user to input students names and numerical grade values. I have already completed 3/4 of the program but am stuck on the bubblesort method as this is what it requires:
The program must have an indefinite loop, which prompts the user to select a sorting criterion or to end the program, and must also use bubble sort. Note: The user may either select name or grade as the sorting criteria. The program must use bubble sort to sort that data according to the specific criteria and then use another loop to display the data. This process must continue until the user ends the program.
My problem is, while i can easily do the bubblesort, where to look on how to link elements of the two arraylists I'm using (one for grades, one for names) so that when the user decides what sort they want, the individual's name and grade stays together.
I made a small aplication which draws 3 rectangles in different spots(0,0 , 50,50 , 100,100)
Am I used an KeyListener + ActionListener, to make them move in the let's call it box.
How can I do in order that those 3 elements do not cross, so you can always see them, they don't collapse into each other?
Java Code:
package matrixmoveelements;
import java.awt.Color;
import java.awt.Graphics;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import java.awt.event.KeyEvent;

I'm doing an exercise we're you're supposed to sort strings in alphabetical order, without importing anything , not using the Arrays.sort() method.
I think I got the method down partially right, or it is on the right track, but it is completely not being applied to my answer. All it prints out in the console is the actual String array twice, without sorting anything.
public class arrayofstrings {
public static void sort(String[] a) {
String temp= "";
int min;
int i= 0;
for (int j=0; j<a.length-1; j++) {
[Code] ....
I am trying to sort the 5 cards in decreasing order and this is exactly what my professor gave us but it has errors.
int pos;
int max;
for (pos = 0; pos < hand.length; pos++){
max = pos;
for (int i = pos + 1; i < hand.length; i++){
if (hand[max] < hand[i]){
max = i;
}
}
if (max != pos){
int temp = hand[pos];
hand[pos] = hand[max];
hand[max] = temp;
}
}
}
Line 6 has an error with the < operator.
Line 11&13 says cannot convert from card to Int.
This method is passing in Card[] hand
I have a data structure such as: ArrayList<ArrayList<Integer,String>
The data looks as [[1,2,3] [3,4] [99,98,40,32,45,65,1]]
I am trying to access each element and put them into a hashtable such as:
Hashtable<Integer,String>
With what I am doing below I am getting an out of bound error but can't see any other way of accessing the element
public static void hash(ArrayList<ArrayList<String>> list)
{
for(int i = 0; i < list.size(); i++)
{
int cnt = 0;
for(int y = 0; y < list.size(); y++)
{
if (! hashMap.containsValue(list.get(i).get(y)))
{
hashMap.put(cnt, list.get(i).get(y));
cnt++;
}
...
I am trying to make a 2d array that keeps track of comparison counts. what I have so far works ok but writes over the previous elements with 0. can't seem to find where I am re-initializing the previous elements.
//this is one of my fill sort arrays
public void fillSelectionArray(int index, long countSum) {
//rand = new Random( );
//for ( int i = 0; i < listsize; i++) {
selectionList[ index -1] = countSum;
// }
[Code] ....
I know I am missing something just not sure what.
Write a program that asks the user for an integer andthen prints out all its factors in increasing order. Use a class FactorGenerator with a constructor FactorGenerator(int numberToFactor) and methods nextFactor and hasMoreFactors. Supply a class FactorTester whose main methods reads a user input, constructs a FactorGenerator object and prints the factors.
Here is what I have so far for my main class and tester class
public class FactorGenerator
{
int factor;
int number;
int x;
FactorGenerator(int numberToFactor)
{
number = numberToFactor;
}

I have never seen a class defined under another class ....
class pe{
static class pqsort implements Comparator<integer>
public into compare(Integer one,Integer two)
return two-one;
}
}
First I want to know how class pqsort is defined under class pe ....
And how the comparator used in this example is sorting elements in reverse order
I am taking the Class Algorithms and Datastructures and got an assignment for Lab that really throws me off. The goal is to create an Array out of a given CSV file, implement several Methods that get the size of array, etc.
I am still stuck in the first part where the CSV has to be imported into the Array. My problem is that I need a mechanism that figures out the needed size for the Array, creates the array, and only then transfers the data from the CSV.
The list consists of the following wifi related values:
MAC-Adress, SSID, Timestamp, Signalstrength.
These are on the list, separated by comma. The Columns are each of these, and the rows are the four types of values making up the information on a certain wifi network.
The catch is, we are not allowed to use any of the following:
java.util.ArrayList
java.util.Arrays
and any class out of java.util.Collection.
So far I used the BufferedReader to read in the file and tried to implement the array, but I get an arrayindexoutofboundsexception.
Below is my Code (Its still an active construction zone):
public class WhatsThere {
public WhatsThere(String wifiscan) throws IOException {
}
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
// WhatsThere Liste = new WhatsThere(String wifiscan);
String[][] arrayListe = new String[0][0];
[Code] ....
I am writing a program that grab user input number which represent beats per minute separated by commas. It then parses the numbers and reorders them from smallest to largest and then outputs the average, medium, maximum and minimum number all in separate lines. I am having trouble getting the array to sort the input from smallest to largest. It is currently only working for 3 numbers inputted. Anything more will not reorder it.

When I insert: title, category, year, artist in 4 Strings And when I press "enter" i put those 4 in a array "large", and then when I can start a new music insert with 4 new string elements and add those in the large array..So: I have an array "large" with the length 19 (or so..)(max ~100 or so)Then I what to: get,in a new array "title",the elements:0,4,8,12,16 (from the large array) and put them in a scrollable list. And when I select one element in the title array I then whant to get 3 remaining elements from this. And put it in a array called selection.
So the "large" and the "title" arrays must be dynamically sizes... or be copied to a larger sized..
1 can it be done with arrays?
2 how do dynamically change the size of for example the array "title"?
3 how do I receive the elements 0,4,8,12,16 and so on, (to (
large.length-3) and add it to the title array?
I am having a lot of trouble with this lab. basically I have to make a text processor to read in code put it into a file and output the contents of the input file in alphabetical order one word per line. I have to reference the string varaibles input_filename and output_filename.
import java.io.FileInputStream;
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
import java.io.FileReader;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.PrintWriter;
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.io.File;
public class TextProcessor {
[Code] ....
these are the guidelines to said lab:
1. In the main method define two Strings called input_filename and output_filename. I will be setting these Strings to my own file names for testing your code, so make sure you get these variable names correct, and that you use them properly in the following steps.
2. Read in the text contents of the file referenced by input_filename.
3. Split the contents of the input text into separate tokens, using whitespace as a delimiter.
4. Lower case the tokens.
5. OPTIONAL: remove punctuation
6. Alphabetize the tokens.
7. Using output_filename, write the alphabetized tokens to an output file, one token per line.
8. Be sure to close file streams - no resource leaks!
9. Use methods to separate functionality in your program where possible
