JSP / JSTL :: Printing Encoded Text
Apr 28, 2014
I am using JSTL library in my jsp. Previously, I was directly printing the text in JSP without using JSTL and it was printing fine.
My text is : Server Down, can't perform operation.
I was getting this error message from my backend code and was able to print this successfully. However, after using JSTL, doing like this:
pageContext.setAttribute("error", someObject.getError());
<c:out value="${error}" />
Here, c refers to <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>
This is now printing the encoded form of the apostrophe char : Server Down, can't perform operation.

I am generating textfields dynamically using JSTL forEach. Here is the code ..
<c:forEach var="underlyingTickers" items="${underlyingTickersList}" >
<tr>
<td ><input name="underlyingTickers" type="text" id = "underlyingTickers" value="<c:out value='${underlyingTickers}' />">
</td>
</tr>
</c:forEach>
If there are 4 values in underlyingTickersList A, B C, D and E ... I am getting those values correctly displayed in each text field.
However if I submit the form with all these value how can I get it in the bean? I guess I need to have dynamic id or name for each text field. How can generate it?
Note** I dont have Struts framework.. I am using request.getParameter to fetch the values and set into the bean variable.

I have to write a program that reads data from a file and prints only certain things. The file contains author names and book title names separated by "@" as the delimiter. We need to return only the books written by a certain author.
Here is an example of the text file (database.txt)
Doe@Jane@The West Wind
Smith@John@11 days and nights
Smith@Ken@Java Programming
Johnson@Jim@Web Development
Doe@Jane@The last day
Tolstoy@Leo@Data Structures
Wilson@Helen@Math Theory .....
This is the code I have so far:
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class Driver {
public static void main(String[] args) {
new Driver(args[0]);
} public Driver(String f) {
[Code] ....
I have everything written to record the names and titles of the authors and books, however I am unsure as to how to print ONLY the books written by Jane Doe. Could I possibly put it into a for loop with an if statement saying "if(firstName == "Jane" && lastName == "Doe")" then System.out.print the book title?

I'm getting a Base64 encoded String of raw PDF data from a web service. I have to use this data display the PDF in a PDF viewer (I happen to be using the included 'ThinkFree PDF Viewer' since I'm working on an Android application, but the Android forum doesn't seem to get much traffic, so lets generalize and say any PDF viewer will do).
My code:
File file;
FileOutputStream outputStream;
public void createFile() {
try {
File path = new File(getFilesDir(), "PDFs");
if (!path.exists()) {
path.mkdirs();
[code]....
The error: Error opening file. It does not exist or cannot be read.

If you print (eg a JTable) from Java/Swing and choose "Adobe PDF" as the printer, you get an Acrobat file. But the PDF isn't searchable because the text has already been rendered by Java before Adobe PDF gets to see it. Is there a way to make printing use a more high-level interface to the printer driver so that the text is left intact?

I am checking how to do following task.
01. pickup the selected text file and read the line by line and output the text in to visual text pane.
what i did:.
01. I wrote code that read the text file and output in to jave console/ also some of the interface.
the code read txt file:
Java Code:
String fileName = "C:/Users/lakshan/Desktop/lawyer.txt";
File textFile = new File(fileName);
Scanner in = new Scanner (textFile);
while(in.hasNextLine()){
[code]....
so it will read any text file dynamically and output to the text pane in interface. I think scanner code must be execute after the select the file from the browser and set the scanned result in to variable. then later out put the var as string in some jswing component?

I am looking at JSP page, which has code line as follows
<%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8"%>
<%@ taglib uri="http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/tags-bean" prefix="bean" %>
<%@ taglib uri="http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/tags-html" prefix="html" %>
<%@ taglib uri="http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/tags-logic" prefix="logic" %>
This taglib will have to be installed on local environment. How is it referred in jsp ? I dont see any code in jsp, which refers to the location of JSTL. So how does jsp invoke these tags ? Is it through classpath ?If its so , how is classpath set for JSTL ? Is it just as classpath is set for java ?

i am doing a code using JSTL to fire a query. everything come fine except the resule is not sorted as desired. i am putting the code below--
String sort_order=(String)request.getAttribute("sort_order");
request.setAttribute("sort_order",sort_order);
<sql:query var="viewQueryj" sql= "select USER_ID, PERMISSION_ID, USER_NAME from administrator order by ?">
<sql:param value="${sort_order}"/>
</sql:query>
now the resule is always sorted by USER_ID. if i want to sort it using USER_NAME i pass parameter from controller to this page in sort_oredr variable which comes fine but the result doesn't sort by name, only by id. if i hardcode USER_NAME in query then the result is as desired.

I have the following data in a file called books.xml in my WEB-INF folder:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<books>
<book>
<name>Padam History</name>
[Code] ....
I'm using the following code in a jsp:
<c:import var="bookInfo" url="/WEB-INF/books.xml" />
I know that it's finding the file because if I delete books.xml from the WEB-INF folder I get a FileNotFound exception.
However, for some reason it doesn't appear to be importing the data into the bookInfo variable.
I noticed this problem because when I try to parse it via:
<x:parse xml="${bookInfo}" var="output"/>
I get org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Premature end of file.
When I try to display the data in the variable either by:
<c:out value="${bookInfo}" />
...or by means of a scriptlet (which I realize is not a best practice):
<%
String myVariable = (String)pageContext.getAttribute("bookInfo");
System.out.print("bookInfo=" + myVariable);
%>
...I get nothing.
BTW when I do:
<c:import var="data" url="http://www.tutorialspoint.com"/>
<c:out value="${data}"/>
that works fine!

I have a HashMap returned from the server. There are two conditions
1. HashMap returned with only one set of key value pair or
2. HashMap with multiple set of data key value pairs.
Now in UI I have to display either text box or drop down box depending upon the size of map for that I am using length method
Java Code:
<c:choose>
<c:when test="${fn:length(myDto.mayMapInDto) eq 1}">
display text box
</c:when>
<c:otherwise>
display drop box
</c:otherwise>
</c:choose> mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
I can display drop box by looping but not sure how I can get only one element for text box. Tricky is I can't use key value to access since UI don't know what key will be returned.

Note** When I am doing view Source of my JSP, I am getting value='a'

Is there a way we can open a .chm file stored at server through jsp application without downloading the file and saving it to the local machine.
What I googled is : we cannot download .chm files from a web browser and simply click Open. Download the .chm file to your computer first, right-mouse click it in Windows Explorer and select Properties. Then click Unblock.
But I want my users to simply view the file without downloading it.

Why will this NOT validate correctly in my IF Statement? Basically, a user chooses an option from the drop down list. The value is passed to t.jsp (itself) and if the option "All" is chosen, then it does something. If any of the years are chosen, then it does something else.

<%@ page import="java.io.*" %>
