I/O / Streams :: Search For A Product In Database

Jun 8, 2014

The question is when you send two messages from the client to the server does the server read the messages as one input or do you have to read both inputs on the server side?

Im using DataInputStream and DataOutputStream

On the client side I send two messages one for the database action to be performed and the send is the information needed to get the job done.

Example I want to search for a product in the database.

I send to the server an output message saying search product. I then send to the server which product I want to be searched.

The server then retrieves the message by in.readUTF(); switch statement determines what database action should be performed. Within that case I call another in.readUTF() to pass the information to the database on what product to search for.

Would this work or would the server read both messages from the client as one input stream?

Servlets :: Architecture Design For Shopping Database

Apr 2, 2015

I'm working on a consulting training project to create a eCommerce online shopping application. Nothing big, just something functional and simple. That's why I want to structure it with the easiest maintainability possible. I've already ironed out the the database entities and how they'll relate to one another and even managed to establish connection to the database from my java application class. NOW I need to configure a user session on the web.xml, from what I've learned so far in my consulting, I can easily use jsp and servlets to have httpsession objects receive and send the information needed to and from the database, but the question is, how many do I need for a client's session?

Would maintainability be easier if I divide each entity's class actions to different servlets(a customer servlet, order servlet, product servlet, etc...), or can a single servlet handle an entire session without any complication?

Java Database System - App For Nutritionists To Check What Their Clients Are Eating

Oct 23, 2014

I've been asked to create an app for nutritionists to check what their clients are eating.

I've found a database of all foods with nutritional values. In the past I've dealt with databases which just have are just one dimensional, so it's been easy to just create a string array for it. But this is absolutely huge, it's got about 10,000 rows and 30 or so columns, so that's not going to work any more.

The app needs to ask what the client ate at which times, and then save this along with the nutritional values.

What would be the best way to go about storing and calling a database of this size in java?

Should I learn SQL and JDBC to tackle it or is there any easier way?

Create A Simple User Database That Could Eventually Turn Into A Login System

Jun 6, 2014

So I'm trying to create a simple user database that I could eventually turn into a login system. I created a simple table on MySQL with a name and address for the sake of simplicity. I tried to create simple statement inside my main method that would connect to my MySQL server and when I run my program I get a ClassNotFoundException from "org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver"..Here is what I have in my main method thus far:

public static void main(String args[]) {
try {
Class.forName("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver"); //Load the driver
Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost/data", "root", ""); //Connect
/*
conn.createStatement().execute("CREATE TABLE people (" + "id int(64) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT," + "name varchar(255) NOT NULL," + "address varchar(255) NOT NULL," + "UNIQUE (id)," + "FULLTEXT(name, address))");

[code]....

I downloaded Connector/J in the the binary .zip form and extracted it to my C: drive and put the .jar file into my java directories lib folder. I also added the directory of the .jar file into my CLASSPATH and I still get the exception.

How To Format Methods To Display Number With 1-2 Decimal Places

May 8, 2014

I am working with a program I wrote for class. I got it to compile and do what I want, But I was wondering how I can format my methods to to display a decimal with 1-2 decimal places. Would I create a method in my NumberAnalysis class to do it for me? Or would I declare an instance of the DecimalFormat class in my main method?

import java.util.Scanner; //Needed for Scanner Class
import java.io.*; //Need for File and IOException
import java.text.DecimalFormat;
public class Ex8_11 {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException{
{
DecimalFormat decformatter = new DecimalFormat("#0.00");

[Code] .....

This is my output:

Lowest Number: 1.09
Highest Number: 82.76
Total Number: 367.89000000000004
Total Average Number: 30.657500000000002

Think I just solved the answer to my own question, I did it by declaring double variables in my main method and called the methods and instantiated the variables into the methods... Is there a better way to do this?

package lesson4.skowronek;
 import java.util.Scanner; //Needed for Scanner Class
import java.io.*; //Need for File and IOException
import java.text.DecimalFormat;
public class Ex8_11 {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException{

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Intelligent JComboBox - Display List Of Rivers From Database

Sep 11, 2014

I need to implement an editable JComboBox. It should display a list of rivers from a database. However since the number of rivers is very large, the entries must be dynamically filled after the user has typed in three or more letters.

I have tried to solve this using a KeyAdapter. Everythings works. However after the user has typed in three characters, these three characters are selected in the Combobox. Of course when the user continues to type these chars will be replaced. I have so far not found a solution to deselect the characters and place the cursor at the end.

this.fliessgewaesserComboBox = new JComboBox<UisFliessgewaesser>();
this.fliessgewaesserComboBox.setEditable(true);
this.add(this.fliessgewaesserComboBox, c);
FliessgewaesserSuchenKeyAdapter fliessgewaesserSuchenKeyAdapter = new FliessgewaesserSuchenKeyAdapter(this);
this.fliessgewaesserComboBox.getEditor().getEditorComponent().addKeyListener(fliessgewaesserSuchenKeyAdapter);
