JSP :: Translation Into Servlet DoGet / DoPost Method

Feb 26, 2014

I have the below piece of code in my jsp page.

<% double randomNum= Math.random(); %>
<%= randomNum%>

Now I am trying to run this jsp, it will be translated into servlet. When i checked the generated servlet I found both the above code snippet(scriplet and expression) came in to _jspService method. But in the internet and in many other book i found that scriplet and expression portions will come in the doGet/doPost method (which will be called from jspservice).

So any specific reason why in this case it went in to jspservice method (though I am getting desired output)? I am using tomcat 6.

JSP :: Forward Invokes DoPost When Manual Link Invokes DoGet

Aug 17, 2014

I have a jsp page that has a url that looks like this

<p><a href="SubscriptionController?action=subscriptionlist">Administrator Subscription Maintenance List</a></p>

Now I want to essentially slide through that page by using jsp:forward instead of the link

<jsp:forward page="/SubscriptionController?action=subscriptionlist" />

Problem is, the link invokes the doGet method of my servlet and the jsp:forward invokes the doPost. Is it possible to use jsp:forward and specify doGet somehow?

Servlets :: How To Change URL To JSP Name After Passing To DoPost Method

Aug 12, 2014

I have a log in page accessed by: localhost/Security/Login.jsp

When I click a log in button, doPost() method is executed from Login.java and displays the contents from main.jsp.

However,its url on my browser is localhost/Security/Login.

Generally, the pattern is the address of Login servlet.

So if I click a button from main.jsp, error occurs because it is trying to locate a servlet from /Security/[Servlet name].

What I want is to change the url as I go to main.jsp to localhost/Home/main.jsp.

Is this possible?

Servlets :: DoGet Executes 2 Times

Jan 28, 2015

I created a new servlet to download a pdf-file from a unix-server and display it in an iFrame. The servlet gets called, downloads the pdf, throws away the session parameters and then... starts over again. The session parameters aren't there anymore and the servlet returns an error. The strangest thing is, in our development environment the thing works.

Basic Time Translation Loop

Oct 25, 2014

I am new to programming so for loops are a little confusing to me still but basically what I am doing is making a small java rpg game and I want to add in a time element to it so your character gets things like promotions and such after a certain amount of time playing.

for (int x = months; x < 12; years++) {
for (int y = weeks; y < 4; months++) {
for (int z = days; z < 7; weeks++) {
for (int j = hours; j < 24; days++) {
for (int k = minutes; k < 60; hours++) {
}
}
}
}
}

That's what I have so far but I am getting a logical error/ infinite loop when I run. I have added each unit of time as a static variable so there's no problem there.

Servlets :: DoGet Is Launched Twice Through Annotation Calling

Oct 24, 2014

For some reasons my servlet doGet method is being called twice. I am calling servlet from the index.jsp page by using servlet annotation "/Profile/*. And it passes path as localhost:1919/Profile/username to getPost method.

<li><a href="Profile/<%=lg.getUsername()%>">Your Profile</a></li>

Servlet Profile retrieves data from the java container stores it as an attribute and forwards to profile.jsp page.

rd = request.getRequestDispatcher("/profile.jsp");
request.setAttribute("ProfileInfo", proInfo);
rd.forward(request, response);

My profile.jsp page uses java code to show all the data (and it shows it perfectly). But then I click link to the next update_profile.jsp page. Just simple link. Then I realize that on this step for strange reasons for me doGet method from Profile servlet is called the second time. And passes path as localhost:1919/Profile/update_profile.jsp

Here is my profile.jsp code:

<%@page contentType="text/html" pageEncoding="UTF-8"%>
<%@ page import="uk.ac.dundee.computing.aec.instagrim.containers.*" %>
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">

[Code] ....

And update_profile.jsp file is just simple file with <h1>hello</h1> output. I have looked in the internet that this might be a mapping problem or my css relative path connection problem. As you see I have commented out my css connection and problem still exists. My run output in the IDE also shows these errors:

org.apache.jasper.JasperException: An exception occurred processing JSP page /profile.jsp at line 27

Java Servlet :: CharConversionException During Post Method

Feb 26, 2013

XML request message using HTTP POST is received by the Servlet interface. While we are reading and trying to parse the InputStreamObject, we are getting the following error message.

doPost java.io.CharConversionException: Characters larger than 4 bytes are not supported: byte 0x8e implies a length of more than 4 bytes

It looks like we are receiving some invalid Non-ASCII characters in the XML message.

The above error is thrown intermittently. Whenever we have this CharConversionException, the servlet gets corrupted and it impacts few good xml messages that follows after the error.

I need to know the following:

1. How to fix this exception and skip the bad message?
2. Is it possible to log the entire xml message in the catch block, whenever we have this exception?

NOTE: we tried different ways, not able to print the xml message, as the inputstream seems to be closed/null, when it reaches the catch block.

Tried the below code , but the servlet process/thread hungs and throws the below error:

Thread "WebContainer : 3" (00000028) has been active for 667781 milliseconds and may be hung.  There is/are 1 thread(s) in total in the server that may be hung.

Below is the code snippet:

public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
               throws ServletException, IOException {
          response.setContentType("text/xml");
          request.setCharacterEncoding("ISO-8859-1");
          OutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
          InputStream inputStream=null;

[Code] ....

Issue of either fixing/overcoming the actual exception and printing out the entire xml message(bad one) in ours log during the catch block.

JSF :: Get Data From Managed Bean Method After Servlet Filter

Feb 15, 2015

I have a situation to load data while JSF page loads. Also have a filter which populates user information from http request.

I was expecting the filter first to populate the user information and in the managed bean get method to verify the user information and get the data (from database). But in this case i see the managed bean get method is invoked before filter populates user information and i get null pointer exception because the user information is null.

I had to work around to get the user information from FacesContext in the managed bean get method because the user information wasn't available. Is there a way to make sure the filter is invoked first?

Translation Game - Translate A Word Proposed To And Check If Input Response Is Correct

Dec 19, 2013

The project is to develop the game Translate the Word .... It is asking user to translate a word proposed to and check if the input response is correct. At the end of the game score will be calculated and displayed.

Game Play :

1 - Ask the user to specify , through the console , its name and the number of words to offer . It is up to you to handle exceptions (eg number of words greater than the number you provided )
2 - Recover user response ( the word translated ) and check whether to continue . (eg you want to continue (y / n)) after each proposal.
3 - compare the response of the user with that which is preset for the word in question .
4 - Show the score at the end ( or at the breakpoint ) .
5 - Save the file in a user name , the score , the number of questions and the start date and end of the game played .

Some notes to consider :

1 - The language (eg, English - French , English - Arabic , etc. . ): It is up to you to specify the language adopted in the game and inform the user of your choice.
2 - The word bank to offer : It is up to you to develop the appropriate means to get the words to propose to the user. That said , the words and their translations can be retrieved :

a. a TXT file
b . an XML file . ( Tutorials DOM and SAX )
c . CSV file ( OpenCSV Tutorial )
d. a database ( Tutorial Access)
e . through APIs (eg Wordnet and google translate etc . ) .
f . a combination of the previous options a, bc , d and / or e . (eg words stored in a txt file and answers retrieved from the api google translate)
g . etc. .

Examples of files and databases are attached to the project statement . You will need to add one or more external libraries to your project. Click here for details on adding external libraries to Netbeans .

3 - A user will be associated with the question score if he can translate the word correctly. The score for each question can be calculated based on the number of words / questions to be proposed .

Development : In this project you will need at least a class called Question to encapsulate the word and its translations and provide all necessary methods to manipulate the object type Question.

An interface called IParser to make extensible project. Any class that implements IParser is a parser file (XML , TXT , CSV , etc.). / Database. In your project there will be a single class that implements IParser and will be used to retrieve words and their translations.

Add the ability to store the questions and answers of the user on the hard disk. Make the class Serializable Question

Servlets :: Calling DoGet Of Child Class From Service Of Parent Class

May 28, 2014

Regarding the lifecycle of servlet , in headfirst servlet i can find :

You normally will NOT override the service() method, so the one from HttpServlet will run. The service() method figures out which HTTP method (GET, POST, etc.) is in the request, and invokes the matching doGet() or doPost() method. The doGet() and doPost() inside HttpServlet don’t do anything, so you have to override one or both. This thread dies (or is put back in a Container-managed pool) when service() completes.

How can I call the doGet method of the subclass from the superclass. i am not getting this .

Beyond the basic methods get and post, I didn't understand the purpose of too many methods. Obviously I can debug but I can figure out every purpose because it is not clean code: at least when I compare with much more straight forward servlets that I have supported. It seems that who has developed this application has used some common practice of wrapping DOM and SAX methods.
