We have developed a java application, whose primary objective is to read a file(input file), process it and convert it into set of output files. (I have given a generic description of our solution, to avoid irrelevant details).
This program works perfectly fine when the input file is of 4 GB, with memory settings of -Xms4096m -Xmx16384m in a 32 GB RAM
Now we need to run our application with the input file of size 130 GB.
We used a linux box with 250GB RAM and with memory setting of -Xms40g -Xmx200g (also tried couple of other variations) to run the application and hit OutOfMemory Exception.
At this stage of our project it's very hard to consider redesigning the code to accommodate hadoop ( or someother large scale data processing framework), also the current hardware configuration which we can afford is 250GB of RAM.
Any ways to avoid OutOfMemory Exceptions, what is the general practice when developing these kind of applications.?

Why is that ? Why am I unable to add this site to list ?
I am using 64-bit system and have downloaded and installed 64 bit update patch 51.

I am trying to create a GUI interface in swing which consists of four classes: a GUI class, which creates a main JPanel, a label, and a JList, which it takes from the second class, a MovesList class that contains a JList and the stuff needed to interface with it. It also has a main class, which basically just creates an object of the GUI class for the main window, and an Other class from which I would like to be able to add an item to the JList. I created methods in the MovesList class to get each component (like getMoveslist, or getMovesListScrollPane), which I then used to create the JList in the GUI class. I also created an addMove method so that I can add an item to the JList from any class through a MovesList object. However, this addMove method only works when called from the GUI or MovesList classes -- it does nothing when I collect from the Other class.
Here is my code:
//Main class
public class TestProject {
public static void main(String[] args) {
GUI mainWindow = new GUI();
mainWindow.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
[Code] ....
When I run this code, I get a window with a JLabel that says "Moves," and a JList that contains five elements -- test 1-test 5, but not a sixth "test from other class." ( using the add move method ) However, when I click on the window, the addMove method is also called, and successfully adds "test 6" to the list.

I use Javassist to manually add a exception table entry:
Java Code:
MethodInfo minfo = (MethodInfo) aclasscf.getMethods().get(0);
CodeAttribute ca = minfo.getCodeAttribute();
ExceptionTable et = ca.getExceptionTable();
et.add(26, 30, 40, 0);
System.out.println("exception table size: " + et.size()); mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
If I get the bytecode with javap it seems to work:
Java Code:
Exception Table
from to target type
26 30 40 any mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
But the problem is that I can't run the file anymore. Simply running it with the java command results in "java.lang.VerifyError: Expecting a stackmap frame at branch target 40". After some research this seems to be a problem with java 7 and a stricter verifier. I read several times that java -XX:-UseSplitVerifier should be used instead.
This really fixed the stackmap error, but then another error appeared: "java.lang.VerifyError: (class: AClass, method: signature: ()V) Inconsistent stack height 2 != 1". Are there any further steps required to insert a new exception in the exception table?
Additional info: Later I want to remove gotos (in this case the goto at line 27) and add a function call instead. When this function finishes it will throw a exception and propagate it back to the caller (which will be at line 27). Then the program should go on as if nothing happend, that is also the reason why the target of the exception is the same as the target of the goto (40)
Here is the bytecode:
Java Code:
0: aload_0
1: invokespecial #8 // Method java/lang/Object."<init>":()V
4: iconst_0
5: istore_1
6: goto 19
9: getstatic #10 // Field java/lang/System.out:Ljava/io/PrintStream;
12: iload_1
13: invokevirtual #16 // Method java/io/PrintStream.println:(I)V
[Code] .....
Exception table:
from to target type
26 30 40 any mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

Im making a simple code to add an array to a List (the code im referring to is <String> )
import java.util.*;
public class L5_ArrayListProgram {
public static void main(String[] args){
String[] things = {"lasers","ghouls", "food", "dark"};
List<String>list1 = new ArrayList<String>();
for(String x: things)
list1.add(x);
My simple question is - what are the <String> ...<String> for? I understand it makes the list1 variable a string, but why is it made like this? do we usualy use <String> when we need to make a variable a String?

I was supposed to write a PolyNode class for each node in the LinkedList, and a Polynomial class which is pretty much the list itself.Here is what I've coded so far:
PolyNode class:
public class PolyNode {
private int coefficient;
private int exponent;
private PolyNode next;
[code]....
The only trouble I'm having with this problem is finding a way to add these two polynomials together. My first attempt at it was to use nested while loops to traverse through both polynomial lists, like so:
public Polynomial addPolynomials(Polynomial p1, Polynomial p2) {
PolyNode current1 = p1.getFirstNode();
PolyNode current2 = p2.getFirstNode();
int coeff;
int expo;
Polynomial polySum = new Polynomial();
[code]....
Basically what this method does:
-Check to see if the exponents between two terms are the same
-If true, add their coefficients together
-Create a new node for the polySum with that coefficient sum and the particular exponent value
-At the end, return the polySum list which should be the sum of two polynomials
The problem with this method is it doesnt account for the values that are left behind because their exponents aren't equal to the exponents of the other list. So, the only terms that are getting added into the sum list are the ones that have the same exponent in both of the lists that are being added together.

I'm having trouble completing my homework. The problem:
>Suppose that you want an operation for the ADT list that adds an array of items to the end of the list. The header of the method could be as follows:
public void addAll(T[] items)
>Write an implementation of this method for the class LinearLinkedList
At first this seemed like an easy problem to me. This is the solution I came up with:
public void addAll(T[] items) {
int length = items.length;
for(int i = 0 ; i < length; i++){
this.addLast(items[index]);
}
}
However, one of the requirements for the assignment is that we're not allowed to use the addLast method. how else to insert items to the Linked List without this method. These are the user-defined LinearLinkedList and ListNode classes we made during class:
**LinearLinkedList**
// Linear linked list class
import java.util.NoSuchElementException;
public class LinearLinkedList {
[code]....

I have created a text file that contains a small list of toy names and prices, like:
Barbie, 12.95
Lego, 15.99
Hot Wheels, 5.00
Power Rangers, 6.49
And what I would like is my application to read the contents of the file and store the toy names in a list component. And then I want to be able to select a toy name from the list and add it to a shopping cart that is a list component as well. I want to the application to have menu items and buttons to allow me to remove items from the shopping cart, clear the shopping cart of all selections, and check out.
When I check out, the application should calculate and display the subtotal of all the toy names in the shopping cart, the sales tax (which can just be 8 percent of the subtotal), and the total.
How to create this simple application example I've just made up, and I'm going to add and use this example to create a bigger application myself.

This is supposed to be a method that adds stars after each item in the list.
Java Code:
import java.util.ArrayList;
public class ClientProgram {
public static void main(String[] args) {
ArrayList<String> list = new ArrayList<String>();
list.add("the");
[Code] ...
I'm guessing it's because list.size() changes, though but it should only find that value in the beginning, so it shouldn't be a problem?

This program contains a superclass and a subclass that will gather the following information from the user:
name, address, phone number, and customer number.
Everything works fine except that I have to create a boolean method in this program that is required to determine based on user input whether they want to be added to a mailing list.
I cannot get this method to work with main, each time it is called it will always return the value but main will constantly read the last statement (else, where it will read "not wanting to be added to the mailing list).
The only way I can get this part of the program to work is by adding an equals method in main that ignores the case, but I am required to write a boolean method so this is not allowed.
Superclass:
public class Person
{
private String name;
private String address;
private String phoneNum;
public Person(String pName, String add, String number)
{
name = pName;
address = add;

I've written a java application with several classes all in the same .java file. It works just fine. Now, I've broken it up so that each class has its own .java file. Still works fine. My next step is to put those classes into a package, but I'm not about to get the program to run.The .java source files are all in /home/user/src
I've set the CLASSPATH to /home/user/src..All of the source files have "package com.myfirm.program" on the first line.I compiled the application with:
javac -d . File1.java File2.java File3.java (etc...)
the compiler created the directory: /home/user/src/com/myfirm/program and put all of the .class files in there.So how do I get the program to run? if I run from /home/usr/src
java File1
I get: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: File1 (wrong name: com/myfirm/program/Program)

String sql = "INSERT INTO CustomerRecord (Name, Number, Adress)"
+" VALUES(?,?,?)";
try {Connection connection = getConnection(); // call connection method
connection.setAutoCommit(false);

I call this method in my interface and i write
if (addrecord == true){System.out.printnl("record added");}
I close the interface then enter search for the record i just added using add record method but i do not find it
what i am trying to say the added record using my application is not there. The question is how to save this record in the database ...
I thought

It works when i do this ,
String a = "*";
for(int i = 0; i++; i<10){
System.out.println(a);
a = a +"*";
}
but it doesn't work the other way,
String a = "***************";
for(int i = 0; i++; i<10){
System.out.println(a);
a = a - "*";
}
I searched about this online and read strings are unmutable in java but what does that exactly mean ? If the string cannot be changed how i am able to add the characters but not remove them.
