Java - Find Number In Given Array Of Integers
May 2, 2014
I wrote this simple piece of code to find the number in the given array of Integers. The program works fine although it shows a couple of errors when i modify it a little bit.
public class DemoLabel{
public static void main(String [] args){
int[][] arrofInts={
{32,45,67,87},
{23,44,55,66},
{12,47,87,56},
{23,44,12,78}
[Code] .....
In the disp() method,Suppose i only want to pass two arguments i.e disp(i,j) given that searchFor variable is visible in the entire class but when i use disp(i,j) i get the following error
DemoLabel.java:38: error: cannot find symbol System.out.println("The number "+searchFor+" is at the location"+i+" , "+j);
^
symbol: variable searchFor
location: class DemoLabel
So i decided to declare the
int searchFor
as
public int searchFor
But the compiler threw another error saying that it was a Illegal start of expression
Also,when i add a SOP line after the label search: it shows the error
DemoLabel.java:25: error: undefined label: search
continue search;
^
Although i got the program to work it would be useful if i could understand why it doesn't work with the modifications.

I'm required to create a program that finds the minimum value in an Array of integers.
Here is my approach :
public class Person {
public static void main(String [ ] args){
int theArray[]=new int [10];
int result = 0;
for (int i:theArray){
if (i < Integer.MAX_VALUE)
[Code]...
I can't really progress from this position. I keep getting told to change the return type to int on main method, then when i do it says change it to void..

I am taking the Class Algorithms and Datastructures and got an assignment for Lab that really throws me off. The goal is to create an Array out of a given CSV file, implement several Methods that get the size of array, etc.
I am still stuck in the first part where the CSV has to be imported into the Array. My problem is that I need a mechanism that figures out the needed size for the Array, creates the array, and only then transfers the data from the CSV.
The list consists of the following wifi related values:
MAC-Adress, SSID, Timestamp, Signalstrength.
These are on the list, separated by comma. The Columns are each of these, and the rows are the four types of values making up the information on a certain wifi network.
The catch is, we are not allowed to use any of the following:
java.util.ArrayList
java.util.Arrays
and any class out of java.util.Collection.
So far I used the BufferedReader to read in the file and tried to implement the array, but I get an arrayindexoutofboundsexception.
Below is my Code (Its still an active construction zone):
public class WhatsThere {
public WhatsThere(String wifiscan) throws IOException {
}
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
// WhatsThere Liste = new WhatsThere(String wifiscan);
String[][] arrayListe = new String[0][0];
[Code] ....

what I needed to know to complete the lesson, but now it just tells me what the output should be and I have to research the information on my own. anyways, here is my code from the previous lesson:
import java.util.Random;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class tnArray {
public static void main(String[] args) {
int [] array;
[code]....
Now I have to change it so that instead of counting the number of times a number will appear in the array, I must output which slot in the array the number is in.

I have 2 arrays in random order of 10 numbers.I need to find the biggest number from array A and B and then when its on a screen second thing is to multiply those numbers by 2.
import java.util.Random;
public class Projektas {
public static void main(String arng[]){
int i,j;
int A[] = new int [10];
int B[] = new int [10];;

This is my code up to now and I can't do anything to make it work. I want it to tell me how many times the number 3 appears, and the last position it was in. I am getting errors like"Cuanto.java:88: getPosition(double[],double) in Cuanto cannot be applied to (double) ....
a = getPosition(a);" and unreachable statements, and value not found. It's all over the place every time I make a change to it.
Java Code:
public class Cuanto {
static int getPosition(int count,double listOfValues[],
double targetValue) {
int a = 0, i;
for (i=0; i < listOfValues.length; i++) {
if (listOfValues[i] == targetValue) {
a++;

I am doing this math for my assignment where you have to find the imaginary number.
double dem = (b*b-4*a*c)*-1;
double dem2 = Math.sqrt(dem);
realPart = (-b/(2*a));
imagine = (dem2)/(2*a);
imagineneg = (dem2)/(2*a);
So basically I am trying to get it that the number inside the square root isnt negative. So lets say I enter a: 1, b: -1, c: 4.25. When you do the discriminant it would be -16 but I want that to be positive so I multiple it by -1 (thats the dem part). Then I sqaure root the whatever the answer is and then go to the imagine and imagineneg part where you find the imaginary number.
My problem is that instead of it being -16*-1 to get 16, some how I get 15.

Write a program that finds both the largest and smallest of several integers. T. For example, a program that determines the winner and loser of a sales contest would input the number of units sold by each salesperson. The salesperson who sells the most units wins the contest; the salesperson who sells the least units loses the contest. Write a pseudocode program, then a Java program that inputs a series of 10 integers and determines and prints the largest integer and the smallest integer. Your program should use at least the following four variables: counter, number , largest and smallest. After i run the code i just get the largest input without the smallest .
This is my code :
import java.util.Scanner; // program uses scanner
// main Class begins
public class Largest12
{
public static void main(String[] args) //main method begins
{
//Initial variables
int counter = 0; // initiate counter
int number=0 ;

I am working on a problem where i have to create a 2d array with given input of the dimensions (odd number) of array, along with a number within the array and to then print out all of the numbers surrounding that number.
Anyway, i am working on simply making the spiral, which should look like the one below.
n = 3
7 8 9
6 1 2
5 4 3
where the 1 always starts in the center with the 2 going to the right, 3 down, then left etc. etc. I was able to create the code by starting on the outer edges rather than the center and working my way to the middle, however my code always starts from the top left and goes around to the center where it needs to start from the top right. I am having trouble altering my code to meet this criteria. This is what i have thus far.
import java.io.*;
public class Spiral
{
public static void main(String args[])throws IOException
{
BufferedReader br=new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
System.out.print("Enter the number of elements : ");
int n=Integer.parseInt(br.readLine());
[Code] .....

In attempting to find the greatest common divisor (gcd) of two integers, n1 and n2, whereas k is a possible gcd and gcd is initialized to 1, the following code has been entered:
for (int k = 2; k <= n1 && k <= n2; k++) {
if ( n1 % 2 == 0 && n2 % 2 == 0)
gcd= k;
}
When asked to change the previous line of code to this:
for (int k = 2; k <= n1 / 2 && k < n2 / 2; k++){
the questions states this revision is wrong and to find the reason.....well, I've changed it, entered "3" (per the answer key) for n1 and n2....
now I can see logically where k (2 in this example) is not <= n1/2, which is 3/2 or 1, since we're dealing w/integers, yet when I compile and run, my answer is indeed, gcd = 1. However, since this is a Boolean expression where && is being used, since the first portion evaluates to "false", the 2nd portion isn't executed and thus my result of 1?...... loops are throwing me for one, for sure....

I am not sure what is happening with my code, but it is giving me a negative number. I am trying to write a program that calculates the product of the odd integers between 1 and 25. I messed with the program and as soon as you enter a number over 22, the end result is a negative number.
int total = 1;
for (int i = 1; i <= 25; i += 2){
total *= i;
}
System.out.println("Product:" + total);

So I need to generate 10 random integers in the range 1-20 but i have to store them in an array called numbers. Then I have to call a method called displayArray which displays the contents of the array and for the assignment i have to use a for loop to traverse the array. The method header for the displayArray method is:
public static void displayArray(int[] array)
This is what I have done
public class RandomIntegers {
static int numbers = 0;
public static void displayArray(int[] array) {
System.out.println(numbers + "Numbers Generated");

I have double checked this code over and over and I just can't find the problem.
What I'm trying to do is take a file and input it into an 2D array.
Ultimately, I should convert the array of integers to an array of characters, then print it out. The file contains a set of ASCII values.
After printing it out, I should then create methods to manipulate the image produced.
Using 2D arrays is a requirement for this exercise.
I think that somehow I'm overcomplicating this and the solution is a lot more simple than I think, but I can't think of what to change.
The error I am getting is:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 40
at main.main(main.java:17)
Java Code:
import java.util.*;
import java.io.*;
public class main {
public static void main(String[] args)

String[][] data = new String[22][40];

Write a recursive Java method countDigitx that takes two integer numbers as input (a number n and digit x) and returns the number of times digits x occurs in number n:
For example if n=23242 and x=2 then the method should return 3 that is the number of times the number 2 found in n.

What the fastest way to sort an array of random integers. My instructor told me to look into an algorithm that uses 2n, but that is all he gave me. I am unable to find anything of the sort (pun intended there) on google, in my text, in my other java books or on here. The only thing that I have come up with are things like mergesort with the exception that the indicies of the Array have to be even. The program that I'm writing takes user input for a minimum to maximum range, the amount of numbers to fill the array in that range, and verbose.
I've tried bubbleSort but it takes forever to sort under the conditions below. I have seen a sorting algorithm that uses n (log n) but didn't really understand how that one worked.
Using the 2n algorithm, I should be able to test the range from 1 - 1000 and have it populate an array of of 1,000,000 random integers. It should be able to complete in a matter of miliseconds.
