So all the errors in the code is fixed but its now got the wrong output
what I get:
Enter numerator; then denominator.

import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
public class Main
{
static int k1,k2,v1,v2;

In fact, I'm not yet past that "Hello World" program.I'm following the steps in "Head First: Java" book, and reached that point where one is ready to write his/her 1st Java code. Here's mine:
public class MyFirstApp
{
public static void main (String[] args)
{
System.out.println("I Rule!");
System.out.println("The World!");
}
}
As simple as it should be, and compiles fine producing the correspondent class. But it doesn't run, however, and spits the following execution-time errors:

how to do this last calculation. I want the user to input and odometer (in feet) and have it use that and the Duration (in hours) to calculate speed in feet per second. Ive been trying to reference it using various methods but I'm stuck. I have it set as a string but whenever i try to pretty much use somewhat the same formula i did for total time it just gives me errors. How do I use that number the user inputs into a formula with the output of the Duration?

I am a novice to coding and very new to Java. It appears that I am having a similar problem as the user above "Scott Allen". With a few exceptions. My issue is that when I run the command "javac" from the command prompt I am receiving the same error:- "javac is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
After reading the comments from above I have configured my System Variables "Path" and "JAVA_HOME" to match the following:
JAVA_HOME: C:Program FilesJavajdk1.6.0_21in
Path: %JAVA_HOME%in; [First Variable]
There is no "Path" User variable on my computer, although there is a "TEMP" and "TMP" in the User Environment variables.
Currently I have the following Java related software installed:
- C:Program FilesJavajre6
- C:Program FilesJavajdk1.6.0_21
- C:Program FilesSunJavaDB
- C:Program FilesEclipse-jee-galileo-3.5.2
I have confirmed the "javac.exe" is located within the in directory of Javajdk.1.6.0_21..When I send "Java -version" to the command prompt the following is returned: java version "1.6.0_26"..Immediately I noticed that the version is wrong, but don't know why or what to do. Below is the output from the command "Java" using the command prompt.
Usage: java [-options] class [args...]
(to execute a class)
or java [-options] -jar jarfile [args...]
(to execute a jar file)
where options include:
-client to select the "client" VM
-server to select the "server" VM
-hotspot is a synonym for the "client" VM [deprecated]
The default VM is client.

I am developing a JavaFX application under Java 8 on my Ubuntu 14.04 (32 bit) system. When I run it on the Ubuntu box, all is fine, but when I run it under Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) with the same Java8 release installed, all my buttons have their text ellipsised (sp?). Why the behavior is different? Or is this a bug in JavaFX? Here are the particulars:

We use a Java program to read an XML file and put its content into a database. We also use Date() to get the current date and insert it into a field in database with content from XML file. Everything worked flawlessly until today, the last day of 2013. We are getting 2014 for the year instead of 2013!!! System date shows correct year, so this must not be an issue.

For some reason, I'm getting the correct result, but my negative sign is having issues. For example, if I do 1/4 - (-2/4), I get (-3/4).
Here is my minus method for subtracting fractions.

@param toUse, the fraction to subtract.
@return minusFraction, the result after subtraction.

Here is my reduce() method, just in case...

Converts negative fractions to the form -x/y, or if -x/-y --> x/y
*/
private void reduce() {
int lowest = Math.abs(numerator);
int highest = Math.abs(denominator);

I only switched an operator from my previous addition method, given here as well. I think only switching the + to a - may have caused my issue.

@param toUse, the fraction to be added.
@return plusFraction, the sum of the two fractions.

I was wondering how you would change a double to a fraction.
For Example:
double x = .5
From this we know that the fraction is obviously 1/2 (simple form of course), but what are the steps necessary to convert the double to the fraction 1/2?

I am trying to get the average of 3 different fraction arrays. I made a fraction class and I made methods such as read() and average() in this new class.
package fractions;
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.Arrays;
public class FractionArrays {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Fraction completeFraction = new Fraction(5,6);
[Code] ....
I was wondering if there was any way to use the arrays I created in the read method in the average method. If I find that out I should be able to do it on my own. Is there a way to make the arrays public to use in different methods?

int d2 = 0; //d2 = second denominator user have to enter
int numeratorAnswer = 0; //calculates numerator of an equation
int denominatorAnswer = 0; //calculates denominator of an equation

I mean its not that important but i figure it will be better if I could print out the answer both in fraction format and decimal format. while my answer prints in fraction just fine how do i show it in decimal?
System.out.println("");
System.out.print("And ");
System.out.print("answer in Decimal is: ");
decimalAnswer = ((double)numeratorAnswer/denominatorAnswer);
System.out.println((float)decimalAnswer);

Searching methods and sorting methods, I tried some (SelectionSort, InsertionSort, BubbleSort, SequentialSearch) and they all work, but I am having problems right now with my BinarySearch method. The problem(s) I have right now is that the method is only finding some numbers in my array, such as 1 and 8, but when I search for the other ones it only buffers and the program has to be stopped manually, since it doesn't print anything. I tried rearranging the while-loop's circumstances but that didn't work.
how to optimize my coding for future tasks so I dont get the same problem(s).

use arrays to store taxpayer information. Use methods for tasks that will be repeated.
-Ask the user how many taxpayers he would like to calculate taxes for.
-Ask the user to enter each taxpayer's first name, last name gross income, and number of children.
-Each taxpayer's tax due is computed as follows
-The taxpayer's dependency exemption is determined by multiplying $3,000 times the number of children.
-The taxpayer's net income is determined by taking the taxpayer's gross income and subtracting the taxpayer's dependency exemption.
-If the taxpayer's net income is between 0 and 50,000, the tax due is 15% of net income.
-If the taxpayer's net income is greater than 50,000, the tax due is
-15% of the first 50,000 of net income PLUS
-25% of any income over 50,000
-The tax due can never be less than 0.
-If the net income is a negative number, the tax due is 0
TAXPAYER INFORMATION: output a message in one dialog box which lists the following info for every taxpayer: first name, last name, gross income, number of children, tax due.
AVERAGE TAX: output a message in a dialog box which states the average of the taxes due.
PRESIDENTAL MESSAGE: output a message in a dialog box which says either "We computed taxes for the president. " or "We did not compute taxes for the president." The president's name is Barack Obama.

I have a problem with timezone in my java application. My current/correct timezone is "Europe/Berlin" or CEST. When I type the following command as my user I get the correct output back:
$ date "+%Z %z"
CEST +0200
But when I run my java application it is using the timezone GMT+0100. I have executed the following Java code to verify:
import java.util.Date;
import java.util.TimeZone;
public class TimeTest {
public static void main(String args[]) {
long time = System.currentTimeMillis();
[Code] ....
When I run it the following output is generated:
Current time in milliseconds = 1435319087443 => Fri Jun 26 12:44:47 GMT+01:00 2015
Current time zone: GMT+01:00
Fri Jun 26 12:44:47 GMT+01:00 2015
So where does java get its timezone from? It's different from the default system timezone.

I need to ask the user how many sheets of paper they have, and then calculate the appropriate number of stamps based on the formula above. I just don't know how to write the math formula to calculate this, i'm stuck. So far I have:

I'm trying to create a GUI interface in Netbeans that calculates a phone bill.
I created a GUI interface that input:
- Account Name.
- Account Number.
- Number of Minutes the phone was used. (with a textarea so the user input the minutes)
- 2 JRadioButtoms so the user can chose the regular or premium service.
- Amount Due (+10% taxes) (also with a textarea)
- Clear/Enter/Result/Done Buttoms
And I need to output:
- Account Name.
- Account Number.
- Number of Minutes.
- Taxes
- Total Amount Due.
I have a couple of math formulas I have to add them to output the above however I'm new to java so I don't know which code to use.
The math formulas are:
-Regular charges = 20 + ( No. Minutes - 50 ) * 0.20
-Premium charges = 50 + ( No. Minutes - 75 ) * 0.50
-Taxes = ( Regular charges + Premium charges ) * 0.10
-Amount Due = Regular charges + Premium charges + Taxes
