JavaFX 2.0 :: How To Dynamically Set Height Of Text Area

Jul 9, 2014

I have a requirement where in the content of the text area is dynamically populated from the database. I am able to successfully retrieve and display the data on the text area.

However when the content is too large, I am not able to dynamically set the height of the text area. When I try to display the same as a label, the display is flawless, dynamically sets the height as per the content. So, I tried to create a label, with same content and dynamically bind the height to the preferred height as below, but it doesn't work.

               // Generate User Note Description
                TextArea textArea = new TextArea();
                Label text = new Label();

               // SETTING THE TEXT TO A LABEL TO RETRIEVE THE HEIGHT
               text.setText(usrNotes.getNote().trim());

Calculating Area Of A Rectangle (height Multiply By Width)

Mar 19, 2014

I was suppose to create a simple Java program for calculating the area of a rectangle (height * width). Then check the user’s input, and make sure that they enter in a positive integer, and letting them try again if they enter in a negative number. (I'm not sure how to get them to try again.

I am suppose to use an "if" statements and indeterminate loops to achieve the solution. The program will have the following requirements:

1. Ask the user to enter in both a height and width (as an integer)
2. If the user enters in a negative number, display an error
3. If the user enters in a negative number, give them another chance to enter in the correct value
4. Calculate the area and display to the screen once two positive integers have been entered.

import java.util.Scanner;
public class RectangleAreaCalc
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
int length;
int width;
int area;

Creating Program That Will Estimate Child Height Based On Height Of Parents

Jun 19, 2014

I am trying to create a program that will estimate a child height based on the height of the parents. It should ask the user to enter a String representing the gender, so m or M for a male and f or F for a female. The program must handle both upper or lower case gender entries. I need it to ask the user for the height of both parents in two parts:

1. for Feet and store in an int variable.
2. for inches and store and int variable.

So for example if the father is 6' 2'', the user would enter 6 when asked for feet and 2 when asked for inches. Convert the height of the each parent to inches. hint 12" in one foot.

Apply the following formulas based on gender (must use an if statement(s)):

Hmale_child = ((Hmother * 13/12) + Hfather)/2
Hfemale_child = ((Hfather * 13/12) + Hmother)/2

I cannot figure out what is missing from my code

<import java.util.Scanner;
public class ChildHeight
{
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner scannerObject = new Scanner(System.in);
String gender;
String male;
String female;

Swing/AWT/SWT :: How To Bold The Text In A Text Area

Oct 13, 2014

I am building a chat server/client and would like to have it so when a user sends a message, the message pops up in the main chat area beside their name, which I would like to be in bold font. Something like "Alan: Hello, how are you?". I can't find a way to do this with a text area or on a string. Do any swing components suitable for use as text areas support bolding of certain sections of the string that you will set to it?

JavaFX 2.0 :: How To Dynamically Load Image Into TableView When Its Row / Cell Becomes Visible

Jan 24, 2015

I am building an application that shows tables with large amounts of data containing columns that should display a thumbnail. However, this thumbnail is supposed to be loaded in the background lazily, when a row becomes visible because it is computationally too expensive to to this when the model data is loaded and typically not necessary to retrieve the thumbnail for all data that is in the table.

I have done the exact same thing in the past in a Swing application by doing this:

Whenever the model has changed or the vertical scrollbar has moved:

- Render a placeholder image in the custom cell renderer for this JTable if no image is available in the model object representing the corresponding row
- Compute the visible rows by using getVisibleRect and rowAtPoint methods in JTable
- Start a background thread that retrieves the image for the given rows and sets the resulting BufferedImage in a custom Model Object that was used in the TableModel (if not already there because of an earlier run)
- Fire a corresponding model change event in the EDT whenever an image has been retrieved in the background thread so the row is rendered again

Btw. the field in the model class holding the BufferedImage was a weak reference in this case so the memory can be reclaimed as needed by the application.

What is the best way to achieve this behaviour using a JFX TableView? I have so far failed to find anything in the API to retrieve the visible items/rows. Is there a completely different approach available/required that uses the Cell API? I fail to see it so far.

JavaFX 2.0 :: Dynamically Change CSS Class And Splash Screen Implementation

Jan 12, 2015

So it seems to reason that many JavaFX applications will want to dynamically change CSS styles.  Is the best way to do this via the <node>.getStyleClass().add("classname")?  The underlying data structure is an observable list.  So lets say one has 5 styles that simply change the fill color of a circle to 5 different colors respectively.  So if I have a condition in which I want to dynamically apply 1 of these 5 styles, the way I currently do this is by defining all 5 styles as strings in a list using a static initializer, then I call <node>.getStyleClass().removeAll(list), then getStyleClass().add("classname").  I do this to avoid adding the same style over and over and inflating the underlying list.  Is this the correct way to manage dynamic CSS styles?

So I know there is a few different way to implement a splash screen.  My app has definitely gotten larger over the last few months of development and I have noticed there is about a 5 second delay between when I run the application to when I see the main stage.  I was thinking a splash screen would be nice to fill this time period.  I have not had time to prototype using a Preloader and I fear that using an alternate, lightweight stage on startup would still take too long of a delay.  I was actually thinking that using the nice and simple JVM argument "-splash:<image name>" would be simple, easy and effective.  Unfortunately when I try to do this, the splash screen comes up but never goes away.

JSP :: JSTL Code To Fetch Text Field Values Dynamically

Apr 16, 2014

I am generating textfields dynamically using JSTL forEach. Here is the code ..

<c:forEach var="underlyingTickers" items="${underlyingTickersList}" >
<tr>
<td ><input name="underlyingTickers" type="text" id = "underlyingTickers" value="<c:out value='${underlyingTickers}' />">
</td>
</tr>
</c:forEach>

If there are 4 values in underlyingTickersList A, B C, D and E ... I am getting those values correctly displayed in each text field.

However if I submit the form with all these value how can I get it in the bean? I guess I need to have dynamic id or name for each text field. How can generate it?

Note** I dont have Struts framework.. I am using request.getParameter to fetch the values and set into the bean variable.

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Can Text Area Also Be Used For Input

Apr 7, 2014

I have a popup that displays textual info and sometimes gets text input from the user. I'm using the following code:

JTextArea textArea = new JTextArea( getGameHistory( true, -2 ) );
JScrollPane scrollPane = new JScrollPane(textArea);
textArea.setLineWrap(true);
textArea.setWrapStyleWord(true);
textArea.setFont(new Font("courier", Font.PLAIN, 12));
scrollPane.setPreferredSize( new Dimension( 30, 100 ) );
String input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null, scrollPane, "Fun Chess ",
JOptionPane.YES_NO_OPTION);

This shows a nice text area and an input field underneath it.The getGameHistory() method just returns a long string detailing the current game.Is there a way of just showing the text area without the input field underneath?Can the text area also be used for input instead?

Button Click - Text Area Cannot Be Resolved Or Is Not A Field

Apr 30, 2014

In my application, some text should be added to a text area in response to a click on a button. So as an action listener to this class, I made another class which implements the ActionListener.

Inside this class, I have obtained the text which I want to be added to the text area. But the text area is in another class and for the action listener I wrote another class.

Now the problem is that when I try to add the text to the text area by the following line of code, it says that textArea_1 can not be resolved or is not a field.

Java Code:

ParentPanel.textArea_1.setText("Name:"+ncrarray[0]+"
Code:"+ncrarray[1]+"
Rank:"+ncrarray[2]); mh_sh_highlight_all('java'); What should I do about it?

Even if I try to write a method like the following in the class in which the text area is created, it gives the same error.

Java Code:

public void printTextArea(String text) {
textArea_1.setText(text);
} mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

The text area is present inside a constructor of the class. I am writing the method outside the constructor (ofcourse).

GUI Program - Enter File Name And Display Text Area

Apr 14, 2014

I have to write a gui program where I can enter a file name and then it gets displayed in a text area when I click Open. Conceptually, I do not get this. I was thinking of appending the text file into a string or something, but I guess I'm confused on how it all works and how I can open the text file. Not asking for the code, but just a compass or something.

JavaFX 2.0 :: Rendering Text Along A Curve

Nov 8, 2014

I'm currently working on a project which requires to have text displayed along a curve. If found this entry a good starting point. It works fine for me on my develompment machine, however the customer on his machine noticed some issues.

The basic idea is to define a path for the text, explode the text into the separate characters and animate them along the path the fraction of the character of the whole lenght. So with a animation duration of 10 seconds and a label of ten characters, the first character would be animated along 1 second, the second 2, and so forth.

This is done by jumping to the designated time in the animation, start the animation and stop it immediately.

Now the problem as I see it, for stopping the animation a separate timer is used, so it can happen that at the time the animation is actually stopped, the animation moved further than the first frame. The effect is that the last characters of the text appear in front (wrapped around).

As I have no evidence to prove or disprove my theory, what do you think is this plausable? I can see a workaround for this issue by defining a path for each character and then let the animation run to the end. While I can set the duration of the animation to 1 ms which should not be visible to the human eye, I'm not able to make the characters invisible and turn the visiblity on when the animation finishes, they always become visible at the start.

Or create my own animation/transition for placing the characters.

JavaFX 2.0 :: How To Access The Formatted Text Of A TableCell

Nov 20, 2014

Our users want us to build the following ontop of a TableView: When a key was typed, the row selection shall change to the first row showing a cell in a given column whose getText() starts with the typed letter. Such a functionality is known from lots of other software, like the Windows file explorer, where you can type a key to jump to the first file starting with that letter. It shouldn't be too complex to build, but due to the separation of "items" and "formatted cell text" it actually is... :-(

Using TableColumn.getCellData(S) we can access the item, but at that point, we don't want to repeat the formatting just for the sake of this functionality. We have set a cell factory providing this format, so the view looks great, but how can we access that formatted String programmatically to jump to the right row at a later time?
