Loop Ending With ESC Button

Jun 10, 2014

I'm doing old projects . This loop will take any number, sum it and when you press the ESC button the loop will end and you will be shown the sum.

Java Code:

import java.util.Scanner;
class Sum {
public static void main(String[] args) {
int sum = 0;
System.out.println("Please write a number, end with ESC button");
Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);
int number = in.nextInt();

[Code] ....

Here is the error

Java Code:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.Error: Unresolved compilation problem:

The operator != is undefined for the argument type(s) int, null mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

So well, the int ain't boolean says itself. also null ain't that for string ?

The original project was to get the number using one dialog box, convert the string to int and run the loop, so when you pressed ESC there then the return would be null.

Game Loop Freezing - Reset Button To Clear Board

Nov 9, 2014

I'm back with a question about the Black Jack assignment. I've created a working game that works for one round, as well as a reset button that's able to clear the board of the old hand. However the runGame() loop, which checks whether a player has played his hand seems to freeze the program the second time around

private void initNewGame(){
dealer.addCard();
for(int i = 0; i < numberofplayers; i++){
players[i].addCard(); //draws card, adds score and paints card to the board
players[i].setStatus(false); //makes the buttons usable in the players[] class

[Code] .....

I know it's probably not optimal having an while loop constantly running to check the status, but I can't seem to figure out why it freezes.

Ending The Run After If A Condition Is Not Met?

May 24, 2014

For an assignment

-I am too write a program that checks if 3 numbers (scannerinputted) are three sides of a triangle if not just ignore it.

-If they are the 3 sides to a triangle tell what kinda triangle it is Right/scalene/equilateral etc.

-ignore the 3 numbers if they are <=0

if(side1+side2>side3 && side1+side3>side2 && side2+side3>side1)
System.out.println("This is a Triangle.");
else
System.out.println("Not a Triangle.");

How can I make the program stop immediately if the else statement is checked. I have more "if statements afterward.

so it would say.

"This not a triangle"

"This is scalene or isosceles"

how can I get this output.

"This is not a triangle" and stop there.

Files Ending In Numbers

Jan 12, 2014

I have a program that uses a text file. The text file is in a folder called "map1". The text file itself is called "store1.txt". The program crashes when trying to read the text file, but has no problem with the folder. It also reads a png file called "1.png" and has no issue. When I change the name of the text file to "storeOne.txt", it works without problems. Why is this?

Ending The Input With Space

Apr 2, 2014

Here is the question I'm having trouble with:

Write a program that reads a list of characters:

eg.ubccdddwfreshawbgtiijhktrocbfgrtwghdddguppgrkitt. etc.

inputted from the keyboard one character at a time starting with a vowel (The vowels are a, e, i, o, and u) until a blank {spacebar} character is issued. You do not press enter after each character. Any other sequence should return an error message and a way of entering it correctly.

Having read in the list (or during the reading of the list) the program is to find the longest continuous occurrence of consonants, outputting the vowels between which this occurs and the length of this string of consonants.

{In the example above, the output would be 13ou}

Check for input errors and respond accordingly.

I have done most of it, the problem being that I don't know how to end the scan with a space so that I don't have to press enter. I have done the bit that finds the biggest amount of consonants in a row. (I'm writing in netbeans)

Ending Process Of Another Running Jar File

Apr 16, 2015

I am working on a management gui for a program. I have implemented the start server button. But now I need to get something working so that when I press stop server the javaw.exe process which is running the the other jar file is stopped and ended.

The gui is going to be using a javaw.exe as well and I don't want to end the entire thing.

I just want to end the javaw.exe process that is running the other jar file.

This is my code for starting it:

JButton btnNewButton_2 = new JButton("Start Server");
btnNewButton_2.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
try {
Process pr = rt.exec("java -jar DEDServer_release.jar");

[Code] ....

I just need to figure out what to do to stop it now.

When Click On New Button / All Icons Except Button Just Clicked Don't Display

Oct 16, 2014

The gist of it is to create a very basic memory game. There are 12 buttons, each associated with an icon. Every button that you click will display the icon and will stay there until clicked again. I got the bulk of it taken care of, but my issue lies with switching the icons back and forth. I can get them to display one at a time, but when I click on a new button, all the icons except the button I just clicked don't display. Essentially, only one shows up at a time.

Swing Button That Creates A New Button

Nov 29, 2014

I am creating a mad libs type program. This section of code is for the user to be able to make their own mad lib template (that people will be able to fill out later). The normal blanks in a mad lib are for verb, noun, adjective, adverb, etc. I cam up with 13 or so of these buttons, but it would be nice that if the user wants to add a button that they think we missed, such as 'Person in the Room' or 'Silly Location'...that the user would be able to do this. I sort of pictured there being a button that says 'add button' or something like that. Is there a ways to do this with the way I've set things up?

public class MadLibs {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
////////////////////
//TEXT PANE WINDOW//
////////////////////
//Set up a JTextPane object : The JTextPane is a specialized form of the JEditorPane
//designed especially for the editing (and display) of styled text.
final JTextPane pane = new JTextPane();

Unable To Print A Loop Inside Array Of Greater Size Than Loop Itself

I am trying to print a loop inside an array of a greater size than the loop itself. Like for example I have an array of size 7 but it has only 3 elements.

int[] array=new int[7]
array[0]=2;
array[1]=3;
array[2]=4;

now what I want to do is print these three numbers in a loop so that my array[3]=2;array[4]=3;array[5]=4 ...... till the last one. Also the array could be any size and not just 7.

While Loop Inside A For Loop To Determine Proper Length Of Variable

for (int i = 0; i < num; i++) {
horse[i]=new thoroughbred();
boolean propernamelength = false;
while (propernamelength==false){
String name = entry.getUserInput("Enter the name of horse "

[code]....

I was just wondering what was going on here -- I've initialized the variable, so why do I get this message? (actually the carat was under the variable name inside the parentheses.

When Type Quit To Close Outer Loop / It Still Runs Inner Loop

Nov 2, 2014

I have everything else working. My problem is that when i type "quit" to close the outer loop. It still runs the inner loop. The National Bank manager wants you to code a program that reads each clients charges to their Credit Card account and outputs the average charge per client and the overall average for the total number of clients in the Bank.

Hint: The OUTER LOOP in your program should allow the user the name of the client and end the program when the name entered is QUIT.In addition to the outer loop, you need AN INNER LOOP that will allow the user to input the clients charge to his/her account by entering one charge at a time and end inputting the charges whenever she/he enters -1 for a value. This INNER LOOP will performed the Add for all the charges entered for a client and count the number of charges entered.

After INNER LOOP ends, the program calculates an average for this student. The average is calculated by dividing the Total into the number of charges entered. The program prints the average charge for that client, adds the Total to a GrandTotal, assigns zero to the Total and counter variables before it loops back to get the grade for another client.Use DecimalFormat or NumberFormat to format the numeric output to dollar amounts.

The output of the program should something like this:

John Smith average $850.00
Maria Gonzalez average $90.67
Terry Lucas average $959.00
Mickey Mouse course average $6,050.89
National Bank client average $1,987.67

Code:

public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in);
String name = "";
int charge = 0;
int count = -1;
int total = 1;
int grandtotal = 0;
int average = 0;

How To Store Value From Loop To Add To New Value From Loop

Feb 9, 2015

I am trying to make a program add values from a loop. So what its supposed to do is search through tokens on an imported file. The file lists State, Capital, and then capital population. Then take the population string, turn it into numbers, and then do stuff with the numbers. First I'm supposed to find the Highest and lowest population of the places in the file (which I did without problem), but the finally thing is I'm supposed to add each found population to the last so I can find the average of the populations.

I just cannot seem to grasp how to do that. I THINK I'm supposed to some how store the given value into a variable, but how do I get that variable to add to the new value?

like...?
Get token -> a
b = a
c = a + b

or wait no.....

Java Code :

import java.io.*;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class CapPopS
{
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException
{
File stateCAP = new File("state-capital-2004population.txt");
if (!stateCAP.exists())
