OO Principles - Reduce Number Of Methods In API Without Losing Any Functionality

Jun 20, 2014

A team of programmers is reviewing a proposed API for a new utility class. After some discussion, they realize that they can reduce the number of methods in the API without losing any functionality. If they implement the new design, which two OO principles will they be promoting?

A. Looser coupling

B. Tighter coupling

C. Lower cohesion

D. Higher cohesion

E. Weaker encapsulation

F. Stronger encapsulation

How To Reduce Number Of Parallel Arrays In Code

Mar 8, 2015

I'm building a text based "game" where you are communicating with this android creature called Gargoid , at a VERY primitive level . how it works is, simply the user type in a sentence which is decoded for meaning by comparing it with a built in list of words in order to figure out what the user is saying, and then reply with a a relevant response also from a list of built in words. the whole thing would look something like this,

user: what is your name
Gargoid : my name is Gargoid, nice to meet you
user: how is the weather
Gargoid: the weather is wonderful

so far I have 11 arrays which are the following

String[] for user typed in words used for comparison to find meaning ..An Array of String[] , 7 so far, to hold what I call the Gargoid dictionary for example String[] greeting={hi,hello,aloha}, words that indicates greeting int[] called frequency to determine which of the 7 arrays have the greatest "relevancy" to what is being said. and finally another String[] for responses here's the actual code, I want you guys to tell me if there's a way to reduce all this never ending number of arrays? and also is this code a good application of object oriented programming?

MainClass
public class GargoidMain {
public static void main(String[] args) {
TheKeyBoard keyboard=new TheKeyBoard();
TheTranslator translator=new TheTranslator();
TheBrain brain=new TheBrain();
translator.translate(keyboard.userSaysWhat());
brain.respond(translator.userSays());

Losing Control Of The Console

Jun 14, 2014

I have a multithreaded java program. I have a few worker threads which process data over a udp server. Then I have another thread for console input. The problem is when there is an error with one of the worker threads, and it prints to the console, my console thread loses "focus", that is, the while loop seems to no longer run. Here is the console thread:

Java Code:

public void run() {
Console c = System.console();
if (c == null) {
Logger.writeError("No console.");
System.exit(1);
}
while(true){
String login = c.readLine(">>>: ");
System.out.println("You entered: " + login);
}
} mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

When an exception is raised, it prints it to the console, and suddenly the program no longer shows the >>> prompt from above.

Losing Color During Image Conversion Using JAI

Jan 20, 2015

I've been using Java Advanced Imaging to convert tiff images to jpeg. The code I'm using is pretty simple, and I'll include it below:

Java Code: private static void convertImage(File tiff_src, File jpg_dest)
{
if (tiff_src == null || !tiff_src.exists()) throw new IllegalArgumentException();
try
{
SeekableStream stream = null;

[code]...

The problem when I run this code is that during conversion, the decoder or encoder seems to drop a good deal of black. I'd like to include examples, but the tiff images are about 30 MB...I've tried configuring the decode parameters, as well as the encode parameters, but like I said, somewhere during conversion I drop a good deal of the black from the image.

Reflection To Reduce Boilerplate Code

Jul 17, 2014

I have the following classes:

abstract class BaseClass {
}
(doesn't have to be abstract if not necessary, but currently there is no need for it not to be abstract)

class InheritedClassA extends BaseClass {
DataA a;
DataB b;
DataC c;

[Code] ....

Now, I want to get the elements like follows:

BaseClass b = new InheritedClassA();
DataA dataA = b.getDataA(); //returns the DataA field if it's a data member of the inherited class, otherwise null

I know I could do something like this:

abstract class BaseClass {
public DataA getDataA() {
return null;
}
public DataB getDataB() {
return null;

[Code] ...

and override getters as necessary in the inherited classes:

class InheritedClassA extends BaseClass {
DataA a;
DataB b;
DataC c;

public DataA getDataA() {
return a;

[Code] ...

But this introduces an awful lot of boilerplate code, especially in the BaseClass class. In my current plans, there could easily be over a hundred different Data classes, and I would have to write a method that simply returns null for each.

I read about the @Inject annotation and reflection. Is it possible to reduce or eliminate the boilerplate code with these tricks, possibly by putting new methods into the classes?

JavaFX 2.0 :: TreeView Select Item 0 When Losing Focus

Oct 31, 2014

I have a case where I have a TreeView and I use it to select items from the tree. After I select each item I then clear the TreeView selection. Then, when I select outside of the window, the setFocused is called which in turn selects item 0 from the tree. I see in the TreeView.java the code,

    private InvalidationListener focusedListener = observable -> {
        // RT-25679 - we select the first item in the control if there is no
        // current selection or focus on any other cell
        MultipleSelectionModel<TreeItem<T>> sm = getSelectionModel();
        FocusModel<TreeItem<T>> fm = getFocusModel();

 [Code] .....

Is there anyway to suppress this behavior?

How To Format Methods To Display Number With 1-2 Decimal Places

May 8, 2014

I am working with a program I wrote for class. I got it to compile and do what I want, But I was wondering how I can format my methods to to display a decimal with 1-2 decimal places. Would I create a method in my NumberAnalysis class to do it for me? Or would I declare an instance of the DecimalFormat class in my main method?

import java.util.Scanner; //Needed for Scanner Class
import java.io.*; //Need for File and IOException
import java.text.DecimalFormat;
public class Ex8_11 {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException{
{
DecimalFormat decformatter = new DecimalFormat("#0.00");

[Code] .....

This is my output:

Lowest Number: 1.09
Highest Number: 82.76
Total Number: 367.89000000000004
Total Average Number: 30.657500000000002

Think I just solved the answer to my own question, I did it by declaring double variables in my main method and called the methods and instantiated the variables into the methods... Is there a better way to do this?

package lesson4.skowronek;
 import java.util.Scanner; //Needed for Scanner Class
import java.io.*; //Need for File and IOException
import java.text.DecimalFormat;
public class Ex8_11 {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException{

[Code] ....

Is there a reliable and secure way to reduce the footprint of the JRE? Are there "light distributions" or a list of libs/files that can be safely removed?

Read From User Input (integer) And Reduce It By Multiplying Its Non-zero Digits

Nov 15, 2014

Write a program that reads from the user an integer and reduce it by multiplying its non-zero digits. The result of the multiplication is a number which is to be reduced as the initial one. This process continues until an integer of one single digit is obtained. For example:

64734502 (6 * 4 * 7 * 3 * 4 * 5 * 2) 20160 (2 * 1 * 6) 12 (1 * 2) 2

Your program should display the number obtained in every iteration.

Sample run1
Enter an integer: 64734502
After iteration 1: 20160
After iteration 2: 12
After iteration 3: 2

Sample run2
Enter an integer: 97737999
After iteration 1: 6751269
After iteration 2: 22680
After iteration 3: 192
After iteration 4: 18
After iteration 5: 8

Number Guessing Program - Computer Guesses A Number That User Is Thinking Of Within Certain Range

Mar 28, 2015

I have a beginning Java Program I have been working on that creates a number guessing program where the computer guesses a number that the user is thinking of within a certain range. I so far have the program below, but need getting rid of a few kinks/ adding features.

-First, I need to set it up so that the user will be prompted and give a range. It should run and produce something like this:

Welcome to this first-ever mind-guessing program!

Please pick a range (higher than 1 and no larger than 50): 32

You will choose a number between 1 and 32... and I will try to guess it.

With each of my guess, you will tell me whether I am too high (h or H), too low (l or L), match (m or M), or you want to quit (q or Q). My objective is to find the number using as few guesses as possible.

-Second, the game is supposed to give up and restart after failing the five, guesses, but for some reason, after it fails the fifth time, it prompts a fifth guess once again instead, then restarts after- I need to prevent this, so that it should look something like this:

My fourth guess is 17: h
My guess is too high?

My fifth guess is 16: h
*** I am unlucky this round. I give up.

Let's play!

My first guess is 10:
etc..

import java.util.*;
import java.lang.Math;
public class numguessprac1 {
// Declaring variables
public static String input;
public static int quit;
public static int guess;
public static int wins;

So I am currently writing my first assignment and have run into problems with my coding. The task was to have someone enter a 5 digit number and in return, I list each number on their respective lines. We also must create an error if a number other than 5 digits was entered. My problem is that when they enter a 1 or 2,3,4,6,7,8 digit number.. the error message occurs along with the rest of the messages (listing the numbers, etc). I want the program to end (or even re-ask to enter the numbers) if they incorrectly enter the data.
