OpenJDK Java Command Running Instead Of Oracle Version

Dec 1, 2014

I've Installed oracle JDK version 1.8 on a debian machine that already has openjdk 1.6.i've set the path variable in etc/login.defs and java_home variable In etc/environment. When I echo $JAVA_HOME it points to the oracle version correctly and when I run javac It uses the oracle 1.8 version. The problem is when I run the java command , It runs the openjdk 1.6 version and I'm not sure why.If I type java -version It shows the openjdk version.

Wrong Version Appearing For Java Command

Sep 8, 2011

I am a novice to coding and very new to Java. It appears that I am having a similar problem as the user above "Scott Allen". With a few exceptions. My issue is that when I run the command "javac" from the command prompt I am receiving the same error:- "javac is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

After reading the comments from above I have configured my System Variables "Path" and "JAVA_HOME" to match the following:
JAVA_HOME: C:Program FilesJavajdk1.6.0_21in
Path: %JAVA_HOME%in; [First Variable]

There is no "Path" User variable on my computer, although there is a "TEMP" and "TMP" in the User Environment variables.

Currently I have the following Java related software installed:
- C:Program FilesJavajre6
- C:Program FilesJavajdk1.6.0_21
- C:Program FilesSunJavaDB
- C:Program FilesEclipse-jee-galileo-3.5.2

I have confirmed the "javac.exe" is located within the in directory of Javajdk.1.6.0_21..When I send "Java -version" to the command prompt the following is returned: java version "1.6.0_26"..Immediately I noticed that the version is wrong, but don't know why or what to do. Below is the output from the command "Java" using the command prompt.

Usage: java [-options] class [args...]
(to execute a class)
or java [-options] -jar jarfile [args...]
(to execute a jar file)

where options include:

-client to select the "client" VM
-server to select the "server" VM
-hotspot is a synonym for the "client" VM [deprecated]
The default VM is client.

Adding Package Name To Source-code When Compiling / Running From Command Line?

Apr 29, 2015

I am operating java from the command line (using Terminal on Mac OSX 10.9.5).The current directory within Terminal is called "orange" and the following sourcecode file is in the orange directory :

Test1.java
package orange;
public class Test1 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Test1 works");
}
}

This complies to Test1.class (visible in the orange directory) but when I try to run it in Terminal (simply using "java Test1" from within the orange directory). I get the following error message (which I don't get if I simply comment out the line //package orange;)

Creating Generic Version Of Methods

Jul 21, 2014

So I have this class containing all my Enum types, also including methods for fetching Enum types based on their title attribute:

abstract class Enums {
 static private Landmass getLandmass(String name) {
for ( Landmass l : Landmass.values( ) ) {
if(l.title.equals(name)){
return l;

[Code] .....

The second method (getAttribute) is created by copy-paste and I also need to repeat this exercise with several other types of Enums. This seems like a waste of code however.

Instead, I thought I'd create a generic method for fetching any type of Enums. As far as I could follow the tutorial @ Oracle I need a generic class for this. Thus the EnumHelper class:

abstract class EnumHelper<T> {
 private T getEnum(T type, String name) {
for ( type t : type.values( ) ) {
if(t.title.equals(name)){
return t;
}
}
return null;
}
}

This, however, doesn't compute:

horoscopeEnums.java:234: error: cannot find symbol
for ( type t : type.values( ) ) {
^
symbol: class type
location: class EnumHelper<T>
where T is a type-variable:

[Code] ....

2 errors

To be honest I haven't been able to make much sense of the documentation on generics, thus its no surprise I'm stuck.

Design And Implement GUI Front End For Computerized Version Of Battleship

Feb 21, 2014

Code for implementing a simple computerised version of Battleships has been supplied. Examine the code ensuring that you understand it. The game is played against the computer.

A number of ships (default is 6) are place randomly on a 4 x 4 grid. A ship occupies one square only. The player then guesses the position of a ship. If he/she guesses correctly the ship is HIT and sinks. If the guess is incorrect the player loses a life. The default number of lives is 7. If the location has been guessed already, no lives are lost.

When the game starts, a 4 x 4 grid should be displayed.

The user should be allowed to enter/select a cell location. If the selected cell contains a ship, the ship will be destroyed. If not the player loses a life. The cell should display an appropriate picture, icon or message informing the user of its current state.

The number of lives and number of ships remaining should be displayed.

When the game ends an appropriate message should be shown informing the player whether he/she has won or lost. The positions of the ships should also be shown.

The purpose of this assignment is that students demonstrate an understanding of the Java Swing library and that he/she can navigate and use the API effectively.

Your finished GUI should be both user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing.

Ideally, the user should have the option to play another game, to quit or give up mid-game. You may also wish to include other options such as different levels of difficulty, etc.

Running Programs Through Java

Mar 30, 2014

I've been playing around with this for about an hour.

Java Code:

Runtime runTime = Runtime.getRuntime();
try {
Process process = runTime.exec("notepad");
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
So that works. Notepad will open.

However, I'm trying to get other programs to open. Specifically, this program: C:Octave3.2.4_gcc-4.4.0inoctave-3.2.4.exe...However, using that in place of notepad doesn't work. I'm assuming that there is some sort of system variable that explains why simply typing "notepad" works? As if you type notepad into the run box, notepad will open. Soo does that snippet work by going through some sort of system variables?How would I go about opening other programs, such as the one I referenced above.
