Overriding ToString - Indicate Whether Coin Is Face Up Or Down

Jan 2, 2015

what im trying to do is modify the Coin class to override the toString() method so that it indicates whether the coin is face up or face down. For example, "The coin is face up." This is what i have so far:

public class Coin {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Coin coin = new Coin();
for (int i = 0; i < 1; i++) {
coin.flip();
System.out.println(coin);

Face Changer Application

Jul 5, 2014

-The assignment asked us to make a program that looks like this.Want it to look like.jpg

-My application currently looks like this.Currently Looks Like.jpg

The update button and check boxes all work, I'm just having issues getting it to look like its suppose to. I also can't figure out how to draw a JLabel on top of another JLabel, essentially stacking them on top of each other, that's why the back of the head isn't being drawn. This is the source code of my program, I use Eclipse in case your wondering.faceAppSource.rar

So what I need is the repositioning of the left menu bar so it looks similar to the example picture, and I need to create a filled circle for the shape of the head in the right panel either with a ImageIcon or a fillOval().

Program That Displays A Smiley Face Bouncing Around The Screen

May 30, 2014

I am writing a program that displays a smiley face bouncing around the screen. When I load the program it just shows a blank black JFrame. Here is the panel JPanel

import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;
public class ReboundPanel extends JPanel {
private final int WIDTH = 300, HEIGHT = 100;
private final int DELAY = 20, IMAGE_SIZE= 35;
private ImageIcon image;

[Code]...

I have a suspicion that it might have to do with image = new ImageIcon("happyFace.gif");

I have tried other programs using .gif and they haven't worked on my computer and I haven't been able to figure out why.

Implementing A Face That Smiles And Frowns - JButtons Not Working In Applet

May 9, 2015

I have to implement a face that smiles and frowns. I figured the easiest way to do this was to use JButtons. I also can't close the applet without hitting "end program". I was given a bit of code and had to add onto it. Here's what I have so far.

import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.BorderLayout;
import java.awt.Graphics;
import java.awt.Color;
import javax.swing.*;
public class AnimationFace extends JFrame {
public static final int WINDOW_WIDTH = 400;
public static final int WINDOW_HEIGHT = 400;

[Code] .....

It's 90% done but once I changed the face from smile to frown, it lost an eyeball.

I want it to output something like "number of heads:". Instead my program outputs multiple lines saying "number of heads: *a number*" or "number of tails: *a number*".create the output I want by modifying my program?

Making Coin Star Simulator

Oct 13, 2014

I have been tasked with creating a coin Star simulator. This accomplishes which accomplishes the following tasks:

Prompts the user to enter coins:

(example inputs): (Note, these can't be like a numerical input followed by a word input, it needs to be one line)

4 quarters
3 dimes
0 pennies

All of which would be allowed inputs.

If an incorrect format is used it should tell the user to use the correct format of number space cointype

After every new input it should give a running total of the current money the system has stored.

this loop should continue until the user enters the phrase "finish"

Then, this system should output the money (minus 9.1% fee) in the largest denominations possible (up to $20)

So if the total came to $ 131.33 (after fee)

It should output:

6 twenties 1 tens 0 fives 1 singles 1 quarter 0 dimes 1 nickle 3 pennies.

and then maybe some cheeky text about how the machine stole your money.

The actual coding for me however is very difficult as I really don't know how to convert the string input from the user into usable numerical and substrings for the calculations.

I have some basic skeleton code worked out, but its only designed to run once.

import java.util.Scanner;
 public class CoinStar {
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
public static void main(String[] args) {
/** this first section is supposed to take the string from the user and separate it into two substrings,
* one integer, one word string
*

Write A Static Method That Simulates Flip Of Weighted Coin

Apr 22, 2015

I am supposed to write a static method that simulates a flip of a weighted coin by returning either heads or tails each time it is called. The coin is twice as likely to turn up heads as tails. My idea was to of course use a random class

Random flip = new random

and somehow initialize it so 3 numbers are called and create if statements so that when 0 and 1 are called heads returns and when 3 is called tails is.How do I put all this together?

private int heads;
private int tails;
private int face;

cF = new Coin(0,0,0);

Overriding CompareTo From Comparable Interface

Oct 31, 2014

Here is my code:

/*
* Implement the Comparable interface on objects of type Order.
* Compare orderId, then productId. The lesser orderId should come first. If the orderIds match, then the lesser productId should come first.
*/

@Override
public int compareTo(Order ord) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
if(orderId > ord.orderId){
return 1;

[Code] ....

Here is the output:

Actual: 0
Expected: -1
Actual: -1
Expected: -1
Actual: 1
Expected: 1
Actual: 1
Expected: 1
Actual: 0
Expected: 0
Actual: 0
Expected: 0

In short, the "Actual" is what my code produces and the "Expected" is what it is supposed to produce. As you can see, only the first one is mismatching... I'll admit, the comment section above the method is confusing and I wasn't exactly sure what it wants me to do, but I thought I figured it out. I just don't see how 5/6 of these tests can work and the 6th one not.

Clarity On Overriding Equals Method

Oct 2, 2014

For a few days I've been reading about the importance of overriding the equals method. How overriding it actually determines or checks the values stored in the variable. I realize that you can check the values stored in the primitive datatypes with "==", and when you don't override the equals method it acts the same way, right? When used with a reference datatype, "==" or the default equals() method only compares, or sees, if the variable is pointing to the same instance of a class. For some reason, in the examples, what is taking place to actually check the values stored inside the variables.

Here is part of an example (I've added comments for things that are confusing me):

@Override
public boolean equals(Object obj) {
//So we use Object here instead of the class type
// we're overriding this equals method for?
Is this so that we can use it to check different types? (overloading?)
if (obj == this) {
return true;

//Isn't this checking to see if the calling object is the same as the object we're passing to it?
Why doesn't this return false?
}
if (obj == null || obj.getClass() != this.getClass()) {
return false;
}

//How exactly do we check the values stored in each object though?
}

Overriding Equals Method From Object Class

May 5, 2014

I am attempting to override the equals method from the Object class which checks if two variables point towards the same object. I want the method to check if if the argument being passed in(an object) has the same data(instance variables) as the object that's calling this method. A NullPointerException is being thrown; Here is the code.

package javaapplication5;
import java.text.NumberFormat;
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.lang.Object;
public class Product {
private String product;
private String description;
private double price;

at javaapplication5.Product.main(Product.java:24)

Converting Object ToString

Apr 21, 2014

I am trying to display the contents of my Object but when I compile it I get this:proj4.TellerQueue@1db9742

I am pretty sure it's because I havent created my own toString method but I could be wrong. If this is the case, what do I need to do to properly display the variables of my object? Right now my class, BankQueue, contains another object called Person, which contains a String and int variables. I want to do something like this:

class BankQueue{
Queue<Person> q = new LinkedList<Person>();
public String toString(){
return q.;//display contents of the q

[code]...

but Im not sure how to convert these into Strings.
