Reading User Input From JTextField As Int To Create Matrix
Sep 16, 2014
I am required to read user input to create two matrices which will eventually be added together. I am unsure as to how I can read the input from the user as an int and not a String. The input is from size 0-10 for both column and row size. Also, can you have a new button created in the actionPerformed method of a previous button?

I am having trouble taking user input and passing it to another class as a variable. If I assign the value explicitly (see line 59), it works just fine. What I want to do though, is assign the input from inputField to the variable inputVariable. I tried using:
inputVariable = inputField.getText();
This does not work. Regardless of what is typed into inputField, the output I get is just:
"The user typed "

The project is a program that allows the user to enter students and enter grades for each student. One of the requirements is that if there is already a grade stored for the student that it will display the previous grade. IF the user then enters a new grade the new grade will be stored. IF the user simply presses enter (enters an empty string) nothing is done. I have everything working except for the requirement of doing nothing if the user enters an empty string. If I just press enter at this point I get a NumberFormatException.
The below code is a method "setTestGrades" from the student class. This method iterates through each student object stored in an array list and then checks if there is a previous grade (Requirement# unset grades have to default to -1) before allowing the user to set a new grade.
public void setTestGrades(int testNumber) { //Sets the grade for the specified test number for each student in the arraylist.
testNumber -= 1;
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
for (int i = 0; i < studentList.size(); i++) {
System.out.println("Please enter the grade for Test #" + (testNumber + 1) + " For Student " + studentList.get(i).getStudentName());

Okay, so I know how to get user input and create a variable from the input, create a basic addition sum etc...
So I have this code:

import java.util.Scanner;
class calc{
private static final double add = 0;
private static final double subtract = 0;
public static void main(String args[]){

I'm basically trying to make it so that when the user enters tnum, tnum2, tnum3 and tnum4, their answer turns to the variable which has to be either true or false to make the boolean work. I don't know really how to do this. I want to make it so that if they enter yes, then that makes the boolean true and the numbers will multiply and create the answer variable. If they enter no then the boolean is false and it moves onto the next if statement. How can I do this?

I am making a Sudoku game and creating a matrix of JTextFields. However I am getting the following errors
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException

at SudokuView.<init>(SudokuView.java:18)
at SudokuMain.main(SudokuMain.java:5)
I know the problem is with this code
box[i][j] = new JTextField();
panel.add(box[i][j]);
I know this because when I do this:
panel.add(new JTextField());
It works. However it puzzles me why it is not working.
Whole Code:
import java.awt.GridLayout;
import javax.swing.*;
public class SudokuView {
JFrame frame;
JPanel panelBoard;
JTextField[][] box;
int row=10; int col=10;
SudokuView(){

I have to create a square matrix that has a min and max value as well as a size value which is given a integer value in the main method. The matrix has to be filled with random values. Also I have to add that matrix to another one in an addMatrix method and I have to subtract both in a subMatrix method. These are the requirements:
Methods:
Constructor() - receives the row and col size for myMatrix and a max and min values for range of random fill values for the matrix.
RandFill() - fills matrices with random numbers
addMatrix() - receives a matrix object. adds its myMatrix with the received object's myMatrix. The result is placed in this object's myResultMatrix.
subMatrix() - subtracts both matrices
I typed up this code but I'm not sure about some parts of it and I would creating min and max values in the Random method and in the main printing the separate 2 matrices and adding and subtracting them:
import java.util.*;
public class SquareMatrix2 {
public int size;
public int myMatrix [][];
public int myResultMatrix;
public int [][] ResultStatus;

How would I display certain output text if the text entered equaled "text".
So lets say you enter a question into a JTextField. You press a button that submits the text. The output displayed depends on what the question you asked was.
Think about it as "If question = What color is the sky? On submit, display text "Blue". How to implement this.

I have to create a program that asks a user to enter an amount for rows and an amount for columns. After they input both amounts, they must fill in the matrix with values (values of double data type). After they enter the values, the program is suppose to search the matrix for the element with the highest value. Once it is found, the user will be prompted with the location of the highest value within the array. I got it to work as to where the user inputs the values and he/she will receive a location of an element. However what they receive is incorrect.
For example
"Enter number of rows: 3
Enter number of columns: 4
Enter values: 23.5 6 13 2
1 5 6 3
7 5 9 2"
Once they enter the last value, they will be prompted with
"The highest element is located in 34".
As you can tell, the highest element is located in 01. I think when the user is prompted with the values that they enter for the rows and columns. How can I modify my code as to where it shows the actual location of the highest value?

I did a problem from my book which is "Write a method that displays an n-by-n matrix. Each element is 0 or 1, which is generate randomly. Write a test program that prompts the user to enter n and displays the n-by-b matrix".
So if a user would enter 3, and output could be 0 1 1
0 1 0
1 0 1
So here's my question... I was able to get the program to work in the way my book describes (by just writing the code in the class with the main), but for practice, I want to learn how to do this OOP-style...
I'm not sure how to do this, though, since the method is a void method, so I can't seem to call it within a toString method.
import java.util.Scanner;
public class MatrixTest {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Enter an int");
int number = input.nextInt();
MatrixClass mc = new MatrixClass(number);

I have a GUI with a JTextField. I need to check that the input entered by the user is made up of only integers.
For example I accept: 1, 10, 530, ...
I do not accept: -10, 1.5, -6 ...
I would like to implement this control by using a regular expression so I would have a code like that.
JTextField text = new JTextField();
String input = text.getText();
boolean bool = checkInteger(input);
if(bool)
System.out.println("Ok");
else
System.out.println("Error");
The checkInteger(String input) method should check if the input string is correct or not.
How can I do to implement this control with regular expressions?
Is there an easier way to do it?

Write a java program that will ask a user to input grades until the user inputs the sentinel value -1. The program should test each input to determine whether 0<=grade<=100. If the grade entered is within this range, the program should print "Grade accepted;" if not, the program should print "Invalid input".
