Recursive Method - Calculate Greatest Common Divisor Using Euclidean Method

Apr 29, 2014

Consider the following recursive method that calculates the greatest common divisor using Euclidean method.

PHP Code:

public static int GCD ( int x , int y )
{
    if ( y == 0 )
        return x;
    else if ( x >= y && y > 0)
        return GCD ( y , x % y );
    else return GCD ( y , x );

Trace the above method for x=32 and y=46

Finding Greatest Common Divisor Of 2 Integers?

After learning about Euclid's Algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor of 2 integers, I decided to make a demo program in Java.

int num1 = number1;
int num2 = number2;
if(number1 < number2){

Loop / Boolean - Find Greatest Common Divisor Of Two Integers

Sep 25, 2014

In attempting to find the greatest common divisor (gcd) of two integers, n1 and n2, whereas k is a possible gcd and gcd is initialized to 1, the following code has been entered:

for (int k = 2; k <= n1 && k <= n2; k++) {
if ( n1 % 2 == 0 && n2 % 2 == 0)
gcd= k;
}

When asked to change the previous line of code to this:

for (int k = 2; k <= n1 / 2 && k < n2 / 2; k++){

the questions states this revision is wrong and to find the reason.....well, I've changed it, entered "3" (per the answer key) for n1 and n2....

now I can see logically where k (2 in this example) is not <= n1/2, which is 3/2 or 1, since we're dealing w/integers, yet when I compile and run, my answer is indeed, gcd = 1. However, since this is a Boolean expression where && is being used, since the first portion evaluates to "false", the 2nd portion isn't executed and thus my result of 1?...... loops are throwing me for one, for sure....

Tracing Recursive Method That Calculates GCD

May 3, 2014

I have this code and i want to trace it

public static int GCD ( int x , int y ) {
if ( y == 0 )
return x;
else if ( x >= y && y > 0)
return GCD ( y , x % y );
else return GCD ( y , x );
}

(it is a recursive method that calculates the greatest common divisor using Euclidean method )

while x = 32 and y = 46

I want here to understand how the code work ? Precisely , composition and decomposition operations.

Why Recursive Method Continue To Return 0

Nov 13, 2014

I was told to write a method that adds up the sequence of the formula (n/2n+1) eg. 1/3 + 2/5 + 3/7 etc. simple enough i suppose. my method is below

public static double Series(int n){
if (n==0)return 0;
else return (n/(n*2+1)) + Series(n - 1);
}

However for some reason or another it returns 0 for any number that is put in. I've written it dozens of different ways with no change and i feel like something fairly obvious is being missed on my part. I am honestly intrigued and interested as to why this is happening. i assume it has something to do with the way i put the actual formula in cause if i put anything else in like simply n the recursion would work as expected.

Recursive Method Called RangeSum

Oct 3, 2014

I'm trying to understand the concept behind this recursive method called rangeSum. This method sums a range of array elements with recursion. I tried summing the elements of 2 through 5, and I tried writing down what actually happens when java executes the program, but what I get when I try to figure it out by paper is different from what netbeans gives me. Here is a snapshot of my scratch work as well as my source code. Netbeans gives me "The sum of elements 2 through 5 is 18" when I try running it but it I get 12 when I do the recursion on paper. I know that the source code is correct because it's out of the book but what am I doing wrong when I try figuring it out by hand?

XML Code:

package recursivecall;
import java.util.Scanner;
/**
* Author: <<Conrado Sanchez>> Date: Task:

public class RecursiveCall {

public static void main(String[] args) {

Java Program Method To Calculate Distance

Feb 20, 2015

Write method distance, which calculates the distance between two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2). All numbers and returned values should be of type double. Incorporate this method into an program that enable the user to enter the coordinates of the points, then calculate and display the distance by calling the method –distance.

I've tried numerous times to make it work and I'm on the right path, however I'm missing some things in the code to make my results look like this later on, which I've attached onto this post.

Write A Program That Will Call A Method To Calculate Function

Dec 3, 2014

I have understood my programming class up to this point and now I have been given a lab that I can't figure out for the life of me. Here what I have to do: Write a program that will call a method (called f) to calculate the following function" f(x)=(x^2)-16...this is what the output should be:

x f(x)

2 -12
3 -7
4 0
5 9
6 20
7 33
8 48
9 65
10 84

I guess it also has to print this output in a table even though my professor never mentioned it. Usually

public static int f(int x)
{
return x*x-16;

Method Parameters - Two Fields Of Type Double / Calculate Distance To Another Point

Oct 18, 2014

I've just been having a go at an exercise where I have to create and use a class called Point, with two fields of type double. I have to create some methods for it, one of which is a distanceTo(Point) method, that calculates the distance to another point. I've tried to keep the distanceTo(Point) method short so have created some other methods to use within the method. My question is about the getDistance() method that I've made. As you can see below, I've given it two parameters, which are references to values within two Point objects (this.x and otherPoint.x).

double distanceTo(Point otherPoint) {
double distanceX = getDistance(this.x, otherPoint.x);
double distanceY = getDistance(this.y, otherPoint.y);
return calculateLength(distanceX, distanceY);
}
