Shift-left Array Values - How To Assign Divisors Indexes To Start

Dec 16, 2014

I am writing a program for a game. It is between the user and a virtual player. The game starts with a pool of consecutive integers 1-100. The size of the pool is based on a random generated number at the beginning of the game. At the start, both players' scores are 0. For each turn, the player picks one number from the pool. That value is added to the player's score, the computer gets the sum of all the remaining numbers in the pool that divide evenly into the player's pick. The player's pick and its divisors are then removed from the pool.

The player should be able to play the game as many times as she wants without ending the program. Instructions should appear on the screen only once at the start of the program.

For each turn, both players' current score, the current pool of numbers, and a prompt for a number to be entered should show onscreen. I have written the code until I get to the function that updates the pool of numbers after a turn.

import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.Random;
public class SlickPick {
public static void main (String[] args){
Scanner read = new Scanner(System.in);
int []pool = new int[100];

[Code] ....

My thinking is that I need to use the binary search to find the indexes of the divisors array and then use those indexes as the start values. I'm not sure how to assign the divisors indexes to start. Do I need an array for start? Whenever I run the program, the only value missing is 3.

//Name : poolUpdate
//Description : This function modifies the contents of the pool as a result of a turn of play.
//Parameters : The pool array, the divisors array, the size, and the user's pick.
// :
//Return :
public static void poolUpdate(int[] pool, int[] divisors, int size, int pick){
int low=0;
int high=size-1;

[Code] ....

Rotate Left Bitwise Shift?

May 13, 2014

I'm trying to replicate the rol(rotate left) instruction in assembly though can only get as far as shifting the bits with '<<' or doing Long.rotateLeft(var, 5). Both of these method don't wrap around the bits as the rol instruction does.

Methods Start Will Give Indexes Into Text Where Found Match Starts

Jun 29, 2014

public class Regextest {
public static void main(String a[]){
String stream = "ab34ef";
Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile("d*")

[code]....

My question is: The methods start()will give the indexes into the text where the found match starts .d*, this means if a number found.index must be returned. Why doesn't it print 3? 12345

Another question: Why it prints 6?

0>a
.

.
5>f

What is this 6 in out put?

How To Create Empty Array And Then Assign Values To It

Feb 7, 2015

I am trying to create an empty array that has no assigned length as the amount of elements it needs to hold will be dependent on another value. I then want to use a while loop to assign values to it. Here is an example of what im looking for it doesnt work. Iam trying to do:

int x = 12;
int i = 1;
int k = 0;
int[] factors = {}
while (i<x) {
if (x%i==0) {
factors[k] = i;
k++;

How To Randomly Assign Specific Values In Array Or ArrayList

Apr 3, 2015

I'm trying to build a monopoly like game, and atm I'm trying to find way how to build the Community and Chance chest cards. so far, my logic is

1-create an ArrayList of cards with a given order

2-for a given number of times(for loop) generate 2 random numbers ,which will be the parameters for Collection.swap().

3-swap.

here's the code for the shuffler Button

shuffler.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
@Override
public void onClick(View v) {
for(int i=0;i<shuffeledMessages.length;i++){
int randoma=(int)(Math.random()*4);
int randomb=(int)(Math.random()*4);
Collections.swap(myMessages,randoma,randomb);
}
}
});

For now things seem to work pretty ok, but I'm wondering if this is a good and efficient way to shuffle a card chest especially in case of large number of cards. plus, I'm not sure what would be a good loop count for effective shuffling, in my case I used i<arraylist.size

Accessing Indexes Of One Array And Add Them To Another Integer Array?

Aug 10, 2014

How can I access the index of one character array and store those indexes into another array? I need this array of indices so as to perform an addition with another array.

Suppose I have a char array that stores all the letters of the alphabet (say alpha) and I have an another char array (say letter) that contains some letters in it. I want to retrieve those letters from the "letter" array and check its index in the "alpha" array and store that index into another integer array.

Setting Left And Right Node Values

May 6, 2014

I am getting errors when I try setting left and right values (which are String types) for my tree.I tried doing something like:

Node node = new Node("Is it human?", null, null);
node.getLeft().setNode("Is it Zelda?");//the first left Q
node.getRight().setNode("Is it Kirby?");//the first right Q

but that gives me a runtime error of "java.lang.NullPointerException" which points to the line 2. I also tried this:

Node node = new Node("Is it human?", null, null);
node.setLeft(setNode("Is it Zelda?"));//the first left Q
node.setRight(setNode("Is it Kirby?"));//the first right Q

but that gives me another error, pointing to the setNode for both lines 2 and 3,plus it wouldnt make sense since both setLeft and setRight takes in Node types, not String types.

Here is my Node class:

public class Node {
private Node leftPt, rightPt;//left and right pointers for Node
private String node, left, right;
public Node(String node, Node leftPt, Node rightPt){
this.node = node;
this.leftPt = leftPt;

How To Assign Values To Object

simple assignment of values to a previously initialized object?

See the method useModel ()

The idea is, assign the values to the temporary object, data

Then plunk it into this statement:

Simple enough?

I've been putzing with the syntax for multiple hours, over days, now.

With and without

Encoder - Possibility Of Shift Being Larger Than Alphabet Array Length

Assign Values To Nodes Read From XML Using Java?

Apr 13, 2014

i am trying to assign unique values to nodes read from XML file.. eg: consider this XML file:

<breakfast_menu>
<food>
<name>Belgian Waffles</name>
<price>$5.95</price>
<description> ...Strong Belgian waffles...</description>
<calories>650</calories>

[code]....

now assigning these nodes "a unique value" has to be done following the LSDX labelling pattern i.e:

To the document element we first give an “a”.As there is no parent node for the document element, we assign “0” at the front of that “a” . “0a” is the unique code for the document element (breakfast_menu). For the children nodes of “0a”, we continue with the next level of the XML tree which is “1” then the code of its parent node which is “a” and a concatenation “.” . We then add a letter “b” for the first child, letter “c” for the second child, “d” for the third child and so on.Unique codes for children nodes of “0a” shall be “1a.b”, “1a.c”, “1a.d”, etc.Hence foe the above given XML the mapping would look something like this:

0a breakfast_menu
1a.b food
2ab.b name
2ab.c price
2ab.d description
2ab.e calories
2ab.f chef
3abf.b chef1
3abf.c chef2
1a.c food
2ac.b name
2ac.c price
2ac.d description
2ac.e calories
2ac.f chef
3acf.b chef1
3acf.c chef2

For more samples about LSDX labelling : 1.) Section 3.1 LSDX Labelling on this link: [URL]

2.) Fig 3 on page 1189 on this link:[URL]

right now i am using SAX parser to read xml and get the nodes in their hierarchical order..now the problem is that i have to assign these specific value to their respective nodes using java.

Cannot Assign Cloned String Array To Generic Type Array

Jun 21, 2014

I have the following code in which I am looping through the rows of one array (composed of Strings) and copying it to another array. I am using .clone() to achieve this and it seems work as it changes the memory location of the rows themselves. I did notice that the String objects are still pointing to the same location in memory in both arrays but I won't worry about that for now, at the moment I just want to understand why the array I am cloning is not successfully assigning to the other array.

This is the incorrect line: ar[r] = maze[r].clone();

My code:

private String[][] maze = {{"*","*","*"," ","*","*","*","*","*","*"},
{"*"," ", "*"," "," "," ","*"," ","*","*"},
{"*"," ","*","*","*"," ","*"," ","*","*"},
{"*"," "," "," "," "," "," "," "," ","*"},
{"*","*","*","*","*"," ","*","*","*","*"},
{"*","*","*","*","*"," ","*","*","*","*"}};
//private String[][] mazeCopy = copyMaze(new String[6][10]);
private <T> T[][] copyMaze(T[][] ar){
for (int r = 0; r < ar.length; r++){
ar[r] = maze[r].clone();
}
return ar;
}

My compiler says: Required: T[]. Found: java.lang.String[]

Since ar[r] is an array and .clone() also returns an array why is this line incorrect.

How To Assign Numbers Obtain From Modular Equation To Certain Position In Array

Apr 16, 2015

My biggest issues are as follows:

1) I'm trying to use a logarithm to determine the length of a user input number. I keep getting an error stating <> indetifier expected. I'm assuming this means that the program is not recognizing the function of a logarithm. I know that normally you can include that information in the method, but my teacher has stated specifically that each of these methods be called something else, as shown in the code.

2) I'm not quite sure I understand how to assign the numbers I obtain from the modular equation to a certain position in the array. As I'm asking the user to input any number these values can change so therefore I can't simply state that first number = this place.Here is my code:

Return Array Containing All Strings That Start With Letter A

May 13, 2014

Write a method that accepts an array of Strings.  The method must return an array containing all strings that start with the letter 'A'.

There must be no 'null' values in the resulting array.  The resulting array may be of size zero.

I don't think I am returning ALL the strings that start with A, just the last one of the for loop. Does this look somewhat correct?

public String[] startsWithA(String[] strings) {
String startsWithA = strings[0];
for(int i = 0; i < strings.length; i++) {
if(strings[i].charAt(0) == 'A') {
startsWithA = strings[i];
}
return startsWithA;
}
}

How To Make Shift Encoder / Decoder

I am working on a project where we need to make a shift encoder/decoder. Right now I am working on my prepareString method, and I have no way of testing it yet. I was just wondering if I wrote it correctly. It should pull in the user entered string and check if each character is a letter, and remove all that are not. Then it should turn all the letters to upper case. Based on that does this look right?

private String prepareString(String plainText)
{
int strLength = plainText.length();
for(int i = 0; i < strLength; i++)
{
char c1 = plainText.charAt(i);
boolean isLetter = Character.isAlphabetic(c1);

Encoding A Message Using Caesar Shift

Feb 9, 2014

I have an assignment, similar to ones of seen in the past. The assignment is to take a users text input and to encrypt it using 3 different types of encryptions: Caesar, Transpose, and Reverser. The professor gave us the bulk of the code, and more specifically how to tokenize and shift the letters using Caeser shift. The problem im coming across is that it is not showing anything past the users input. After running it, it just stays there running without showing anything.

Cipher:

package cipher;
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.StringTokenizer;
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
public abstract class Cipher {
public String message;
StringBuilder encrypted_message, decrypted_message;

[Code] ....

The constants have their own separate class, and they appear to work fine. I know that the Transpose and Reverser are incomplete, hence them commented out. But if i cant finish with Caeser first, it wont work at all.

Transfer Random Array Values To A Separate Array?

Feb 16, 2015

filling out a Random array: An Array of Specific Length Filled with Random Numbers This time what I need to do is take the elements from this Random array and assign them to a new Byte array:

for(int i = 0; i < limit-10; i++) {
Random dice = new Random();
int randomIndex = dice.nextInt(array.length);
if (array[randomIndex] < 128) {
System.out.print(array[randomIndex] + " ");
} else if (array[randomIndex] >= 128) {
System.out.print(array[i] + " ");
}

byte[] noteValues = new byte[]

{ 64, 69, 72, 71, 64, 71, 74, 72, 76, 68, 76 }; //This is the byte array filled manually!

I've tried amending the manual input to fit in with the Random array, as follows:

byte[] noteValues = new byte[]
{ array[randomIndex] };

In this case, however, the Byte array can't interpret the int values. Also, if the Byte array is outside the 'for' loop, array[randomIndex] cannot be resolved.

Drawing Shapes Bottom Right To Top Left

Mar 17, 2014

I am having issues with drawing shapes from bottom right to top left.

Issue:

- g.drawRect() will show like I am calling g.fillRect()
- other shapes will not even show the shape in that area

Needs:

- g.drawSHAPE needs to show and not be filled unless I have my fill checkbox selected

The Program:

- Create a JFrame with a draw panel and a component panel
- have a combobox with shapes that, when selected, will draw that shape in the draw panel
- have a button that, when clicked, will launch JColorChooser to change the color of the drawn shape (draw panel is set to black)
- have a checkbox that, when checked, fills the shape
- have mouse listeners to adjust X and Y and will instantly update the shapes size to where you drag/click/press/release

Code for my drawRect():

Java Code:

// if statement to check if mouse drag X is less than starting X
if(x2 <= x){
if(emptyORfill.isSelected()) // emptyORfill is my JCheckBox
g.fillRect(x2, y, x-x2, y2-y); // x-x2 is the same as Math.abs(x2-x)
else
g.drawRect(x2, y, x-x2, y2-y);

[Code] .....

This is just for my Rectangle. This will show a filled rectangle when both mouse drag X and Y are less then the starting X and Y. If I take this fully functional code and adapt it to drawRoundRect(), the round rectangle wont even show the shape when mouse drag X and Y are less than the starting X and Y but will be fine if one or the other is less than the starting X or Y. NOTE: This same exact code worked on my classmates laptop in her program, but in my program on her laptop it did not. She took out the "else" in the else if's and just made them if statements all the way down and it worked on her laptop in my program, but the same "fix" did not work on my pc.

My mouse listener just sets X and Y values in my Shape class that updates my shape methods. I have an item listener for my comboBox that sets default values when a new selection is made and enables/disables editable on my fill checkbox for certain shapes. My action listener looks for the button click and the checkBox click.
