Slot Machine Program Using Methods And Arrays
Nov 13, 2014
I am designing a program that generates 3 random numbers from 1-5 and if 2 match, the user wins $1. If 3 match, the user wins respectively:
All 1s - $5
2s - $10
3s - $25
4s - $50
5s - $100
I first used a loop to run until the user runs out of money or wishes to stop. Then I made 2 methods. 1 to generate the random numbers and 1 to see if the user won any money. I am storing the random numbers in an array called slotnumber.
This is what I have so far but I am getting compiling errors at while (cont == 'y') {
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.Random;
public class SlotMachine
{

I've spent ages trying to implement an exit button into this code. Its the start of a GUI for a slot machine, the actual machine code is in a separate class and I haven't linked them yet. My question is where/how would the exit button be added? I've tried and failed a lot of times....

I'm trying to fix this logic error in my slot machine game where no matter what slot combo comes up, it says you have won $10 and proceeds to add that amount to the balance and subtract the bet amount to the balance, even though it is not a winning combo! I've been trying to solve that and when doing so, I commented out Slot1.randNum1 == 0, Slot2.randNum2 ==0, and Slot3.randNum3 ==0 and anything relating to see if that was the problem, and it seemed like it was, because after that, the logic error described above was gone, but in doing so, the loss/win counter didn't increment, nor did the program pick up on the winning combos. However, I do not know why commenting out anything relating to randNum ==0 would cause that.
Here is the code for the processing (as you can see, some parts are commented in attempt to fix the logic error, but right now the code below is for the logic error that keeps on telling that the user has won):
public void askData ()
{
title ();
int betAmount;
while (true)
{
try
{
c.setCursor (3, 1);
[code]....

I want to create a slot machine in NetBeans, with JavaFX library (without using JavaFX Scene Builder) but i have some problems to create UI.
I created algorithm already but without visuals.
Now my code is:
public class BEST extends Application {
private ImageView var; //init imageview of images
public static void main(String[] args) {
launch(args);
[Code] ....
createbottom(); and creategr(); i wrote already (and my program creates grid pane of random images with double dimension array, random and imageview) and program runs, but i don t know how to keep track of credits balance,in the same time to create new random gridpane of images and to get rid of every gridpane.
Here is creategr();
private GridPane creategr(){
final GridPane creategr = new GridPane();
int[][] newarray=new int[3][3];
int w=100;
for(int i=0; i<3; i++){
for(int j=0; j<3;j++)
[Code] ....
Button "SPIN" is created in createbottom();.

For this program, I have to run a slot machine. It runs until right before the do while loop and then I receive the error: Exception in thread "main" java.util.InputMismatch.Exception. Searching around, someone said it was a scanner error and adding a call keyboard.nextLine(); fixes the problem- however with that I receive the same error.
Code :
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.Random;
import java.io.*;
public class SlotMachineSimulation
{
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException

My assignment is to essentially update a calculator program that uses strings, and methods, to include arrays. How to create and call an array that the user defines the size of and then inputs the numbers to fill the array. Here's the example my prof gave us of what the output should look like:
Menu
1. Add
2. Subtract
3. Multiply
4. Divide
5. Dot product
6. Generate random array
7. Quit
What would you like to do? 1
How many values are in the arrays? 3
Enter the values in the first array, separated by spaces:
2 4 6
Enter the values in the second array, separated by spaces:
1 3 5
The result is [3.0, 7.0, 11.0]
How to create an array that would allow the user to define the size of the array and then inputs the values for the array? I'm completely lost. I never should have taken java as an online class.

I'm working on a side project, which will eventually hopefully be a Pokedex, and I've just been going to it at the end of every chapter and using the stuff I've learned to work on it.So I just read chapter 3, which is all about variables and teaches how to use arrays.
my question is, does an array have to be declared inside a method? Because I'm trying to create an array inside a class without any methods and without the main, and I continuously get errors. Here's a quick working of my code that won't compile.
class blah {
blah a[] = new blah[7];
a[0] = new blah();
}
The error message focuses on a[0] = new blah(); Telling me the 0 should be a ], the = is an illegal start of type, so on and so forth. The program compiles completely fine if it's within a method, like this:
class blah {
void a() {
blah a[] = new blah[7];
a[0] = new blah();
}
}
Or if I have public static void main (String[]args); But I'm trying to practice working outside of main.So does an array have to be within a method,

I am trying to get the average of 3 different fraction arrays. I made a fraction class and I made methods such as read() and average() in this new class.
package fractions;
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.util.Arrays;
public class FractionArrays {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Fraction completeFraction = new Fraction(5,6);
[Code] ....
I was wondering if there was any way to use the arrays I created in the read method in the average method. If I find that out I should be able to do it on my own. Is there a way to make the arrays public to use in different methods?

I am having a difficult time writing what started out as a simple vending machine program. As I go on though, it seems that I'm overcomplicating it and it is getting messy, so I have resorted to the forum before I really get off the path. how to clean it up? I'm going to list a few of the problems I am having with the code below:
1. The user is supposed to enter his/her money and the program is to read each value separately (Do-While loop) and keep a running total of the money entered. I can't seem to get the right code format to do this. I was trying to do this with the variable total and so that is why the total exists in the switch statement, but it did not work.
2. In the second Do-While statement, is there a way to kick back an error when their are insufficient funds to purchase an item? Instead of getting a negative change return.
package practice;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Practice {
public static void main(String[] args) {
double count, total;
int item;
//Display Available Options To Customer
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("*VENDING MACHINE*");
[code]....

I am making a program which stimulates a bet placer machine for horse race betting for my school project.The program isnt complete yet but till this it doesnt let me input the String a and the program stops after printing "Type "view info" to display info about the different derbies". I use BlueJ 3.1.0 and version of jdk is the latest Java 8 Update 25
import java.util.*;
public class Derby
{
public static void main()
{
Scanner in=new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Welcome to the Horse Racing Bet Placer Machine");
System.out.println("Through this Machine you can place bets on different derbies accross the globe");
System.out.println("Press 1 to choose a Derby"); //Ask user whether he wants to place a bet or not
System.out.println("Press 2 if you don't want to place a bet");
int choice=in.nextInt(); //Inputs user's choice
if (choice==2) //Determines the user's choice
[code]....
In this screenshot, after printing ''Type "view info" to display info about the different derbies'' it should let me input the value of String a according to the code but instead it stops the program there and doesn't let me input anything

I had some questions about a theoretical java program. Say you had a java program on a linux server/pc that referenced a folder on that server. And say you had a Client PC (Windows) that had a share folder to that java program.
If that windows client PC tried to run the program would it run (with a GUI if it had one) and would the main directory of the java program still be on the linux server or would it be on the windows computer since that is the computer that is running the program?
Basically I have a program I am trying to find the best way to run it remotely on a windows computer but it references files on the linux server it is located at and needs to put files it creates there as well. I am just trying to make sure I understand my theory here on how the program will run if it IS run remotely.

I'm making a vending machine program to practice inheritance and have a few questions. My superclass is a Soda class, and I'm making subclasses like "Orange soda", "Coke", etc. My first question is, what is the point of the subclass inheriting the instance variables of the superclass? If you have to define them again is there any point in the super class having them? Here is an example of this:
My superclass:
public abstract class Soda {
public double price;
public int numAvailable;
public String name;
public String machineCode;
[code]...
Besides not having to write the vendSoda() method again, what is the benefit of inheritance in a situation like this if you have to define all variables again? My second question is, how could I store all of the code strings from all of the different subclasses in one place? (so when the user enters a code it can search for the code entered to give the desired soda)...

I'm just learning about arrays. I have a small program to write that asks to create 2 arrays. One holding 5 names of flowers. One holding the prices of those 5 flowers. I ask the user what kind of flower they want and the quantity. I then need to create a loop that locates the flower name and uses that index to find the cost of the flower. I am struggling on how to write in code how to use one array index to find another. Example: Roses and $.50.

I am trying to create a program that reads a sentence, such as: "abba is running to the radar" scans this sentence, and then prints out all the palindromes. I am running into issues with my arrays and for statements. Here is my code:
static String palindrome, backwardsLower,
palindromeLower, palindromeClean, backwards2, backwards = "";
static String[] words;
static int counter;
public static void main(String[] args) {
palindrome = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter a phrase. " +
[Code] ...
I am aware that there is a few "useless" variables in there at the moment, I will clean them up (as well as some useless statements, I see those too). The issue comes at about line 17. The variable backwards REMOVES all the spaces from the array, so when it comes time to compare the strings, it is comparing individual words to the ENTIRE string, thus no words will ever be a palindrome.

I am trying to create a program for class the uses two dimensional arrays. I am stuck on the second step that states Use two parallel arrays. One is a two-dimensional array -- a row of this array will hold six values in this order: [0] number of hours worked, [1] hourly pay rate, [2] gross pay, [3] net pay, [4] federal withholding, and [5] state withholding.
This is what I have so far:
Java Code:
double [][] data = new double [30][6];
String [] names = new String [30];
String str = null;
String detail = null;
int n = input(data, names, inputFile); mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
(there's more but i don't believe it pertains to this question)
My question is how would I create this array. Or, is that right above? I've searched online and in my book and I just don't understand.

Recently I have missed a few weeks of my class due to family emergencies. Because of this I have missed very important lectures. My professor has assigned me the following assignment:
Prices Write a Java program that specifies three one-dimensional arrays names price, amount, and total. Each array should be capable of holding 10 elements. Using a loop, input values for the price and amount arrays. The entries in the total array should be the product of the corresponding values in the price and amount arrays. After all the data have been entered, display the following output:
Total Price Amount
==== ==== ======
Under each column heading display the appropriate value.
I know how to display everything using printf, how to create the actual arrays and define the array size, but I am confused on how and what loop to use and how to construct it. This is what I have managed to write up so far:
import java.util.Scanner; // Imports the Scanner class
import java.text.DecimalFormat; // Imports the DecimalFormat class
public class Prices
{
public static void main(String [] args)
{
double[] price = new double[10];
double[] amount = new double[10];
double[] total = new double[10];
// Create a new Scanner object
Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in);
} //End of main method
} // End of public class
