Swing/AWT/SWT :: Running Application Using Java 1.6 And Windows-based X Server

Apr 15, 2011

At our company we run a third-party Java-based GUI application on one of our Linux server machine, displaying the application to our local Windows work stations using the Cygwin X Server.We noticed a few problems with a new version of this application and was able to narrow it down to the following conditions:

1. Java Swing application running on a UNIX host;
2. Java used is 1.6 (problem not noticed when using Java 1.5)
3. Displaying to Cygwin X server (I've heard other windows-based X servers have the same issue, but I don't have access to any others at this time).

If we run the application natively on Windows, I'm told if the application runs on the Linux host and displays natively to that machine's display there are no problems (although I'm not able to verify this myself).The problems are:

1. Any new frame/dialog is opened in the geographic center of the dual displays, rather than in the middle of one or the other;
2. Any attempt to drag the window to a different location on the display seems to work, but as soon as you let go of the drag, the window snaps back to the original location. This only happens the first time you try to move each window.
3. Drop-down controls (JComboBox, for example) just close back up as soon as you click on them. If you click and drag the mouse to attempt to make a selection, no selection can be made.

Are these known problems using 1.6 on UNIX displaying to Windows-based X Servers?

The only real problem is number 3. I expect that if I put more work into the window placement, I should be able to get past number 1. Number 2 is just a minor annoyance.The following is a simple Java Swing application which when run in the correct environment will exhibit the problems.

import java.awt.EventQueue;
import java.awt.GridBagConstraints;
import java.awt.GridBagLayout;
import java.awt.Insets;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;

Setting Image Icon And Closing Up A Game

Jan 23, 2014

I recently made a game. But, I want to package it and give it to my friends. I know that I can create a jar of it and add the images to the folder, but what I would absolutely love is for it to just be a picture with the game name and click to run. The second thing is to replace that java icon to an icon of my preference, which I have been told numerous times to do with

frame.setIconImage(Image image)

which does not work for me.

Opening And Closing Multiple Files In While Loop

Feb 7, 2014

I'm going through a file (MySQL dump) and I wish to take the SQL and create individual files for each table (as opposed to what I do now, which is just run through the whole thing).

<code>
  BufferedReader myDumpfileReader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(tfDumpfile.getText()));  BufferedWriter myDumpfileWriter = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter("/users/linehanp/mydb/bin/tgac_dump/Vanilla.sql"));
while((dumpFileLine = myDumpfileReader.readLine()) != null){      DoStuff();
      MyDumfileWriter.write("Whatever");
  }
myDumpfileReader.close();myDumpfileWriter.close();
</code>

Now, this all works fine - but what I want to do is create a separate .sql file for each table.

However, I can't figure out the best way to do this - how do I create a new FileWriter (or instance of whatever class is required) as I'm going through the while loop? That or pointing the same one to different files as I go through the loop.

It can be assumed that the file may exceed RAM - I want to do it line by line rather than slurping the entire file as a string and "cheating" that way.

There appear to be many (a bewildering amount of) I/O options and I'm just unsure.

Closing Old Pop Up Frame With Existing Action Button

May 27, 2015

I am modifying existing code to display graph after pressing calculate button. The graph pop ups in new controller/window.  The pop up disappears after closing the application entirely.  However I have trouble figuring out if it is possible to close that old/previous pop up and new pop up appears when calculate button is pressed again.  Or at least reuse the pop up to display a new graph.

public class AdamCalculationApp extends AbstractCalculation {
  /**
   * Does a calculation.
   */
  public void calculate() { // Does a calculation
control.println("Adam Calculation button pressed.");
double k = control.getDouble("k value"); // String must match argument of setValue
control.println("k*k = "+(k*k));
control.println("random = "+Math.random());

Threads Stuck On Closing Brace Of While Loop

Apr 14, 2014

While analyzing the thread dumps for a performance issue in our java ee web application, I see many thread dumps stuck on a closing brace of a while loop. Here is the code block of a third party library bitronix (version 1.3.3 SNAPSHOT)

public XAResourceHolderState findXAResourceHolderState(XAResource xaResource) throws BitronixSystemException {
        Iterator it = resources.iterator();
        while (it.hasNext()) {
            XAResourceHolderState xaResourceHolderState = (XAResourceHolderState) it.next();
            if (xaResourceHolderState.getXAResource() == xaResource)
                return xaResourceHolderState;
        }
        return null;
    }

The thread dumps indicate that many threads are stuck in RUNNABLE state on line number 07. What could be the possible reasons on why a thread could get stuck on a closing brace of a while loop? The iterator of the while loop is a custom implementation.

        JEditorPane website = new JEditorPane ( " http://www.google.com/ " ) ;

Swing/AWT/SWT :: JComboBox Crashes Application

Sep 15, 2014

I lately started using "advanced" Swing-Components, like JTabbedPane and JComboBox, but I dont get the ComboBox working/This is the code I use:

public class PreferencesPanel extends JPanel
{
public PreferencesPanel (MapEditWindow window)
{
super ();

setLayout (new FlowLayout ());

String[] resolutions =
{
"1024x768", "1280x800"

[code]...

The TabbedPane is placed in another JPanel, which is placed in an Fullscreen-Window.

Now, the problem is, that when I start the application and open the "Preferences"-Tab, everything seems normal, I can see the ComboBox and the first entry is selected. But when I click it, instead of opening and offering me more choices, the program crashes and my screen turns black (I'm using OS X, on Windows it would possibly turn white, but I didnt test this out).

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Making GUI Application Design Extensible

May 5, 2015

I have to create a Swing application for which i haved a set of requirements as,

1. there will be two JPanels ,left and right, on the main JFrame , left frame would contain a JTextField and a submit JButton ,user can enter values 1,2,3 ,in the JTextField and presses the JButton

a. if user enters 1, a JTextField will be shown on right JPanel
b. if user enters 2, a JTextField and a JRadioButton will be shown on right JPanel
c. if user enters 3, a JTextField and a JComboBox will be shown on right JPanel

So I have done that but when my boss sees the code behind this application he told me to make it more extensible i.e. if there is going to be an additional requirement for values 4 or 5 or 6 and so on , then i have to make minimal changes in my code or no change in my code and it should work . how this can be done ? is it possible make such software design ?

public class DesktopApp extends JFrame {
private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
private static final Logger logger = Logger.getLogger(DesktopApp.class);
private JPanel jp, jp2, mainPanel;
private JLabel jl, jl1, jl2, jl3, jl4, jl5;
private JTextField jText, jText2, jText3, jText4;

[Code] ....

What wrong am i doing here in this code which in not considered to be an extensible design ?
