Swing/AWT/SWT :: How To Change Button Text And Actions In Input Dialog Box
Oct 20, 2014
I'd like to change the text on the two buttons which I have in my Dialog Box, how should I do this?
Also, when I click the X Button in the top right of the Dialog Box, nothing happens, and the program only stops when I end it in jGrasp. How do I make this button close the program when clicked on?

Ok, so I am trying to learn about JFrames and JPanels. I have figured out buttons, layouts, etc. What im having trouble with is accessing the label object from the ButtonHandler class since it is static and I need my JLabel to be non-static so that it can change. Basically, I want JLabel to change to a pre-determined text string once a button is pressed. Here's what I have so far
package makewindow;
import java.awt.BorderLayout;
import java.awt.Color;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import javax.swing.JButton;
import javax.swing.JFrame;
import javax.swing.JLabel;
import javax.swing.JPanel;

I need to validate an input box so that the user can enter only round numbers.
The user can't enter any other characters except 0 to 9, they shouldn't be able to enter decimal points either.
They would be answering questions like, 'What is 7 times 8?'
Also, I need to validate it so that the program doesnt crash if they leave the input box blank or empty.

I have two classes involved in this portion. CheckIn_Search
(class #1) is my main UI and I am collecting search information from the user in a jPanel form. When they click "Search" it passes the search criteria to a method that contacts a web service and gets the results. These results are passed to coSearchResults
(class #2) that opens a jFrame and jTable (in modal format, over the main window created by CheckIn_Search.
The user selects a row in the table and that selection data is passed back to coSearchResults to populate a new jPanel form. When the data is passed from coSearchResults, I want to close its window, hide the first jPanel in CheckIn_Search and make the second jPanel visible. To accomplish this, I created a method in CheckIn_Search that simply hides/shows the panels (it will do more later).
I instantiate and call the method in CoSearchResults as part of the button click event. The problem is, it doesn't work. The panels are unaffected and there are no errors. I've put in break-points and it goes into the method.. Here is the coSearch_Results code.
Here is am retrieving the jtable row id and using the first value in the row to get the data from the table model as there is more data than what is displayed in the table. I'm sending that whole row of data to the method that changes visibility.
private void btnOKActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {//GEN-FIRST:event_btnOKActionPerformed
// TODO add your handling code here:
int rowNum = jTable1.getSelectedRow();
String coNum = jTable1.getValueAt(rowNum,0).toString();
String[] text;

I found different ways to code this for a button named "closeButton":
- closeButton.getRootPane().setDefaultButton(closeButton);
- thisDialog.getRootPane().setDefaultButton(closeButton);
- SwingUtilities.getRootPane(closeButton).setDefaultButton(closeButton);
Which is best?

I want to create a button bar that is the same as the confirmation dialog button bar -- so an OK and cancel button layed out in the platform specific way, and with the same styling.
I have made some progress via a hack -- create an alert dialog, and extract the buttons in the dialog using lookupButton, and then put those buttons in a toolbar. But this doesn't necessarily get a toolbar with the buttons in the correct order. If I could get the button bar out of an alert dialog I would have a solution, but I can't see to do that.

I have a bookings table where customers can view their bookings and in the table there is a button with a command button that onclick goes to the dialogue to display the variable petUpdate value but if you have 2 bookings then all the update buttons display the value of the last petUpdate in the arrayList.
DataTable with the button
<p:dataTable
id="bookingTable"
var="customerBooking"
value="#{booking.sessionBookingList}"
editable="true"
style="margin:0px 0px 20px 100px;font-size:15px;width:600px;"

Code in the above datatable.......The commented out output label displays the correct value for each but when the button is clicked the dialog only displays the last ones value
<p:column headerText="Check Updates" style ="width:50px;">
<!-- <h:outputLabel value="#{customerBooking.petUpdate}"></h:outputLabel> -->
<p:dialog header="#{customerBooking.petName}'s Status" widgetVar="dlg1" minHeight="60" minWidth="60" maxWidth="60">

What would be the simplest way of creating a Dialog that can add TextField dynamically based on whether a radio button option from the dialog box is selected. I thought of JOptionPane.showMessageDialog and adding a JComponent though I would not be able to add a TextField on the fly and I would not be able to add ActionListeners. The dialog would initially contain some radio buttons, labels and textfields.

I have a popup that displays textual info and sometimes gets text input from the user. I'm using the following code:
JTextArea textArea = new JTextArea( getGameHistory( true, -2 ) );
JScrollPane scrollPane = new JScrollPane(textArea);
textArea.setLineWrap(true);
textArea.setWrapStyleWord(true);
textArea.setFont(new Font("courier", Font.PLAIN, 12));
scrollPane.setPreferredSize( new Dimension( 30, 100 ) );
String input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null, scrollPane, "Fun Chess ",
JOptionPane.YES_NO_OPTION);
This shows a nice text area and an input field underneath it.The getGameHistory() method just returns a long string detailing the current game.Is there a way of just showing the text area without the input field underneath?Can the text area also be used for input instead?

I am using the JavaFX dialogs. I have made a dialog as follows:
Alert d = new Alert(AlertType.CONFIRMATION);
d.setTitle(Resources.R(Resources.DELETE_DATA_SOURCE));
d.setHeaderText(...);
I want to make part of the header text bold -- I want a message like "Really delete X" where X is in bold.
Is there any way to do this with a dialog (other than rolling my own?).

I am wondering how to do the following:when a user clicks on a save menu item, a save JFileChooser pops up. I would like to have a default file name set in the FileName box on the chooser, similar to what applications like Microsft word has. Right now, no file name will appear until the user has selected a file.I also need to know how to get the text from this box in the case that the user enters a new file name (the getSelection function is not useful here because the user will not have selected an existing file.)

I wish to display a progress bar during a lengthy file translation process. When I created a ProgressBar class to do this and tested it with a short test program, it seemed to work fine. But when I add my ProgressBar class to a package containing various other classes, put that package in a jar file, and then execute the class using the progress bar from a menu in my main program, the frame of the progress bar shows up with the appropriate caption but the JLabel, JProgressBar, and JButton are not displayed. I have gone over my code numerous times and checked that the ProgressBar class constructor is getting the proper arguments.
// package gov.nasa.jpl.ephemeris;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;
/**
* Progress bar with message text above the bar and a Cancel button below it
*/
public class ProgressBar extends JFrame {
private boolean _cancelled = false;
private JProgressBar _progressBar = null;
[Code] ....
I have also been wondering whether I need a separate instance of the border for each panel, or whether I can just create one instance and use it for all three panels.

My assignment requirements are to display this in Dialog Box / message box . I have written this code so far
import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
public class Exercise04_10 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
int count = 1;
for (int i = 100; i <= 1000; i++)
if (i % 5 == 0 && i % 6 == 0)
How to display the output in dialog box?

I want to calculate the height of a dialog that contain only a table depending on how many rows that table it has so I'm using the cross multiplication rule.For example i check initially that my table is well fitting into the dialog(Without space at the bottom) for some value and after that i use the cross multiplication rule because data are dynamic.But unfortunately this rule does not solve the problem.What's the best rule for fitting a dynamic table inside a dialog or a frame? Here is my code.
public class FlowLayoutChangingGap {
public static void main(String[] args) {
// just for testing perpose but data are getting from database and it's dynamic
Object[][] data = {
{ "Kathy", "Smith", "Snowboarding", new Integer(5) },
{ "John", "Doe", "Rowing", new Integer(3) },

I am creating a mad libs type program. This section of code is for the user to be able to make their own mad lib template (that people will be able to fill out later). The normal blanks in a mad lib are for verb, noun, adjective, adverb, etc. I cam up with 13 or so of these buttons, but it would be nice that if the user wants to add a button that they think we missed, such as 'Person in the Room' or 'Silly Location'...that the user would be able to do this. I sort of pictured there being a button that says 'add button' or something like that. Is there a ways to do this with the way I've set things up?

//Set up a JTextPane object : The JTextPane is a specialized form of the JEditorPane

I am trying to write a program that will generate a QR Code from an input text and also display some information about the input/output bits. So far I have created the frame and what to do next. And I'm not sure if I am on the right track since my level of programming is not that great. By the way, I am using zxing libraries from GitHub. I know, there are plenty of generators online for the QR Code, but that is not what I am looking for. As you can see on the attached image, I am more interested in the efficiency of encoding 2D data. Also, I noticed that almost all the online projects regarding 2D codes are for Android. Which is not very useful.
