Swing/AWT/SWT :: How To Create New JFrames

Sep 28, 2014

I'm just messing around with JFrames and stuff like that (like previous posts). There is no ultimate goal here, which I realize violates that I should write everything down beforehand and know what I'm trying to accomplish. My question is, does this look ok? I'm going to start doing if...else statements but don't want to move on if I think this is bad programming. Any tips on how I create new JFrames under and if...else statement?

import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import javax.swing.JFrame;
import javax.swing.JMenu;
import javax.swing.JMenuBar;
import javax.swing.JMenuItem;

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Combining Two JFrames Into One JFrame?

Mar 20, 2014

All I need to do is show in just one JFrame the two combined JFrames. One JFrame namely leftPanel will appear to the left or west and the other namely rightPanel to the right or east using BorderLayout. I already did creating them first as JPanels or as internal classes and subsetted them in one JFrame but that didn't work because it looked messy. And now I've created them as two separate JFrames, compiled separately, and tried to subset them as one in the JFrame. I didn't add any functionality to this program because all I intend to do is to show those two JFrames together in one JFrame. Here's the code:

import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
public class dirtyIceCream extends JFrame {
leftPanel westPanel;
rightPanel eastPanel;
public dirtyIceCream()

[code].....

What am I missing or did I code anything wrong here? Or should I use NetBeans IDE for anything as complicated as this?

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Sending Serializable Object Between Two JFrames

May 2, 2014

I have two JFrames the first one is a log in screen where i log in to the log in server that i made using RMI . If the log in succeeds i send the user object witch is Serializable to the second JFrame.

The user object is received from the server. This object contains all the information needed in the second JFrame. This second JFrame is made inside the first one and i defined a method with witch i send this user object to the second frame.

Now the problem arises , while inside this method i am able to read all the data i need from the user object. At the end of the method i save the reference of this object in a new User object defined in the second JFrame ,because i need it later on.

But soon as this method finishes , for some reason my reference to the object becomes null , and i cant use it later on.

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Multiple JFrames - Thread And Progress Bar

Mar 29, 2014

I'm struggling with a small project. I have 2 jFrames. The first frame has a button that...

- Display's the second frame containing a progressbar
- Starts a heavy processing thread

I need to update the progressbar on the second jFrame, from a thread started on the first jFrame.

I have 2 problems:

- How do I update the progressbar?
- When the button is clicked, an empty second frame is displayed with no controls. The controls are only rendered/shown, after the large thread process is finished...

I've attached to this post a small screenshot, showing the main idea ...

Source code:

Button action on the first frame:

private void btnGoActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
Progress progress = new Progress(); // The second frame
progress.setVisible(true);
clsProcess myProcess = new clsProcess(); // The thread process
myProcess.start();

Swing/AWT/SWT :: How To Create A Table Where The Header Is A Custom Object

May 14, 2014

I'm trying to create a table where the Header is a custom object.

The custom object would be something along the lines of

public MyColumnObject
{
String myLabel;
ArrayList dataForDropdowns;
int defaultColumnIndex;
int modifiedColumnIndex;
String tooltip;
}

This is simpler then what I want to do, but it's the basic concept. I want the column header to render the myLabel for the visual (at least at first). I want this render to be applied to however many columns I have, which will differ from table to table, but I always want the column header of each column to be of type myColumnObject.

I thought somethinglike this would work, but I'm getting java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.String cannot be cast to myColumnObject which makes sense, but I thought that I would be getting back my object.

p.s. I re-labeled all my code from my actual project, so if something looks off, it was probably just the re labeling.

public NewTestTable(MyColumnObjects[] fields)
{
setModel(new TestObjectTableModel(
new Object [][] {
},
fields
) {
private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
public boolean isCellEditable(int rowIndex, int columnIndex) {

Swing/AWT/SWT :: GUI - Create User Interface That Interacts With Setters And Getters Of Some Classes

Apr 14, 2014

I am new a creating GUIs and am not quite sure how to correctly make one. I have done the inheritance parts, and created two extra appliances: a washer and dryer. Now Creating the GUI ....

Here are the instructions to my project.

Introduction to GUIs (+ some inheritance)

For this assignment, you are going to create a user interface that interacts with the setters and getters of some classes that you will create.

First, create an abstract class called Appliance. This abstract class should have two attributes (dealing with household appliances) and two abstract methods called turnOn() and turnOff(). These methods should return void.

Then, create two subclasses of Appliance that represent household appliances (like a Refrigerator or Stove ((don't use those!))). These subclasses should have two attributes that are specific to the various appliance. Each subclass should implement the turnOn() and turnOff() methods. These methods should print to the command line some information about the appliance as it turns on and off.

Now, the fun part! Create a GUI interface!

Your window should have two panels: one for each appliance subclass. Each panel should have 4 textboxes (with appropriate labels) to receive/display information that correspond to the 4 attributes (2 from Appliance and 2 from the subclass) for each subclass.You also need 2 buttons on each panel: A Get button and a Set button.

When the Get button is pressed, the text boxes should be filled with the information from the instantiated object of the appropriate subclass. When the Set button is pressed, the object should then contain the information contained that the user has altered.

In your main method, you should create an object of each subclass, and prefill it with information (either using the constructor or the setters), then display your GUI. You should now be able to get and set the information for your objects from the GUI.

At least one of your attributes for each subclass should be numeric

Note that you will need to handle incorrectly formatted input (You can use exception handling to do this if you want to. Wrapper classes also will work)

If there is text in the boxes when the "Get" button is pressed, it should be overwritten by what is in the object. Remember that these two panels should both be on screen at the same time.

You don't need 2 different windows, one window: 2 panels.
