Swing/AWT/SWT :: Add JTextField And Additional Output Within ComponentEvent Handlers

Jan 30, 2014

Using the code from the Java Docs (listed below) I am getting behavior that was a bit unexpected. The only changes were to add JTextField and additional output within the ComponentEvent handlers. Run the code and when the frame appears, think of each side as North, South, East (right side) and West (left side) as you are looking at it. This was run using JDK 1.7.0_25.

Run the code.

1 - Click the East edge (right) of the frame and drag to be wider or more narrow. Only the "Resized" is executed for all components which makes sense.

2 - Click the West edge (left) of the frame and drag to be wider or more narrow. This time "Resized" is executed for all components EXCEPT it is "Moved" for JFrame. Why is it "Moved" here for JFrame but not in Step 1?

3 - Click the South edge (bottom) of the frame and drag to be taller or shorter. This time only 2 components are affected. JPanel is "Moved" while JFrame is "Resized".Why isn't both JFrame and JPanel just "Resized"?

4 - Click the North edge (top) of the frame and drag to be taller or shorter. This time only 2 components are affected again but the output is slightly different. JPanel is "Moved" while JFrame is BOTH "Resized" and "Moved".

There just doesn't seem to be consistency here. What are the guidelines or criteria for when these Events are to be executed?

import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
public class ComponentEventDemo extends JPanel
implements ComponentListener,
ItemListener {

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Implementing Multiple Event Handlers

May 3, 2014

I'm having difficulty implementing keyboard and mouse event handlers at the same time for a program designed to notify the user when a key has been pressed or a mouse button clicked.

I can make and understand a program that does one or the other, but when I try to combine them, either the keyboard only or the mouse only works.

here is the code:

import java.awt.Color;
import java.awt.event.KeyListener;
import java.awt.event.KeyEvent;
import javax.swing.JFrame;
import javax.swing.JTextArea;
import java.awt.event.MouseListener;

Input And Output Via JTextField

How would I display certain output text if the text entered equaled "text".

So lets say you enter a question into a JTextField. You press a button that submits the text. The output displayed depends on what the question you asked was.

Think about it as "If question = What color is the sky? On submit, display text "Blue". How to implement this.

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Autocomplete In JTextField

Apr 2, 2014

I have been reading several suggested solutions for implementing autocomplete for a JTextField. However, the documentation is a bit confusing to me. It seems like they mostly require switching to a JComboBox. Can I or can I not continue to use a JTextField and implement an autocomplete feature? I also saw what I thought was a built-in autocomplete "decorator" for swing objects (although it was not clear if it can be used for JTextField) but most of the implementations seem to start from scratch. Any simplest way to implement this (assuming those 2 conditions are not mutually exclusive)?

Swing/AWT/SWT :: How To Get Data From JTextField Over To JTable

I want the actionPerformed to update the row of the JTable but I can't figure out how. There is another class that controls the GUI but did not think it was necessary to include. Swing/AWT/SWT :: How To Make JTextField Editable

Jul 10, 2014

I'm having a hard time finding out the way to make JTextField editable. In what circumstances it can be disabled to write? [even the text in the field can't be selected, not to mention being uneditable. I did the followings to make it editable.

1. In its Properties panel(frame or whatever), checked the "editable" item.
2. In the code I made it run the code below :

void makeFieldsEditable(Boolean flag) {
Left_Name_field.setEditable(flag);
Left_Name_field.setEnabled(flag);

}

Is it related with the properties of the control(JTextField)'s surrounding panel, or even the largest containing frame? Using Netbeans ....

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Unwanted Echo Of JTextField

Oct 29, 2014

I recently began writing a much larger program than I will show. I have boiled the problem down to this SSCCE.

import javax.swing.JFrame;
import javax.swing.JPanel;
import javax.swing.JRadioButton;
import javax.swing.JTextField;
import javax.swing.SwingUtilities;
class TextButton extends JRadioButton

[Code] ....

What i wanted was a JRadioButton with no label carrying around a JTextField. When I added a restore configuration feature in the real program, i found that the text destined for the JTextField was being echoed into the JRadioButton.

Perhaps it is obvious but i sure don't see what I am doing wrong. I am using Java 1.7.0 for development if that makes a difference.

1. Describe what the code displays. A error message would be shown when the use has selected an insufficient number of options.

2. Describe when an event handler (included in the code) gets executed? The event handler gets executed every time a user selects an option(???)

3. Explain a feature of what is displayed

4. Explain the meaning of all of the parameters in the central, complicated call of the code.

5. Describe how the code handles two possible situations.When the user has selected a sufficient number of options (no less than or equal to 0), then no error message would be shown. On the other hand, an error message will be shown when the user has not selected a sufficient number of options (0). (???)

JSP :: Custom Tag Handlers - Classic Type

May 7, 2014

This is related to the book Head first JSP and Servlets 2nd edition. The books says that there are two types of custom tag handlers - Simple and classic. Classic tags are rarely used, so I'd like to skip them for now. I skipped a few pages related to classic and saw some new pages. I am not sure if these new pages are related to classic tags.

IterationTag lets you repeat the body When you write a tag handler that extends TagSupport, you get all the lifecycle methods from the Tag interface, plus the one method from IterationTag—doAfterBody(). Without doAfterBody(), you can’t iterate over the body because doStartTag() is too early, and doEndTag() is too late. But with doAfterBody(), your return value tells the Container whether it should repeat the body again (EVAL_BODY_AGAIN) or call the doEndTag() method (SKIP_BODY).

Default return values from TagSupport.If you don’t override the TagSupport lifecycle methods that return an integer, be aware of the default values the TagSupport method implementations return. The TagSupport class assumes that your tag doesn’t have a body (by returning SKIP_BODY) from do StartTag()), and that if you DO have a body that’s evaluated, you want it evaluated only once (by returning SKIP_BODY from doAfterBody()). It also assumes that you want the rest of the page to evaluate (by returning EVAL-PAGE from doEndtag()).

Additional Methods From Specific Classes That Implement Interface

Jan 8, 2014

I am writing a game in Java for Android (although my question isn't Android or Game Dev specific).

I have a SceneManager class and a Scene interface and then various other classes that implement the Scene interface (Code at the end of this post).

Basically, in my MainGame class (which also implements the Scene Interface for Touch Event capturing purposes) I hold the bulk of my game code. Methods in this class are then called from my Level classes. (most of these are needed in all levels so it makes sense to hold them here and call them from the levels to eliminate unnecessary code duplication)

So, I have Level1, Level2......... Level20 classes which all implement Scene.

Now, the problem comes because in only 2 of my Levels something can happen (that can't in the other 18) and I need to run a response method in these 2 levels (the method isn't exactly the same, the response to this event happening is different for both levels).

To run common methods from my classes, I use my Scene Manager like this:

SceneManager.getInstance().getCurrentScene().updateLogic();
SceneManager.getInstance().getCurrentScene().render();

(The above is from my gameloop) - So it will run the updateLogic(); and render(); methods from whichever is the current scene (Level).

Scene is changed like so:

SceneManager.getInstance().setCurrentScene(LevelX);

This works great as all Level's have an updateLogic(); and render(); method.

So from my mainGame class, I am doing something like : (pseudo code)

public void checkIfSomethingHappened(){
if (something happens){
if (currentLevel==5){
Level5.response();}

[Code]....

The above would be called from my 2 level classes. So something like:

MainGame.checkIfSomethingHappened(); //Called in addition to the normal methods that make up that level

I don't really want to have this (second) 'if' statement here in the middle of my performance critical game loop.

What I'm after is something like this:

if (something happens){
SceneManager.getInstance().getCurrentScene().response();
}

However, this would require me to put stubs in the other 18 classes.

I'm thinking there must be a way to do this as the SceneManager already knows the current scene so it seems a waste checking it again via an if (or switch) statement. What is the best way to do this without having to put stubs into classes that don't require this method?

Servlets :: Multipart Form Data - Sending Additional Data?

Feb 21, 2014

<input type="file" name="datafile">
<input type="text" name="text1">
<input type="submit" value="Next">

Servlet: GetFile

System.out.println(request.getParameter("text1"));

I am able to upload the file to the server, but I am not able to get the value of text1 in the servlet (I am getting null value of text1 in the servlet), I need this textfield in the form to submit some additional information while uploading it to the server.

--> Is enctype="multipart/form-data" option of form doesn't allow other form data to be submited? if it doesn't allow it then what are the other options I have to send this additional textfield to the server.

--> Or is there any other problem in my code?
