Two Classes - How To Use Members Of Color Class Without Using Extends

Nov 4, 2014

I have two classes in two different files.

Color.java and Light.java

The Color class:

public class Color {
private int red;
private int green;
private int blue;
public Color(){
red = 0;
green = 0;
blue = 0;
}

And i have the Light class :

public class Light {
private Color color1;
private boolean switchedon;

public Light(int red, int green, int blue){
//dont know what to write here . how can i use the members of the Color class here ? without using extends.
}
}

ASCII Animation Program - Accessing Data Members From Different Classes

Nov 12, 2014

I have a problem with this ascii animation program I am working on. I declared a method inside of my class AsciiAnimation extends JFrame implements ActionListener, called

package AsciiAnimation;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import java.util.ArrayList;
 import javax.swing.*;
 public class AsciiAnimation extends JFrame implements ActionListener{
int currentFrame = 0;
ArrayList<String> frameList = new ArrayList<String>();

[Code] ....

Basically I just am trying to figure out how java works with me accessing those 2 data members, currentFrame and frameList inside of my first class ALL in the same package.

Redefine FileNotFoundException By Creating A New Class Which Extends It

Mar 25, 2015

I am trying to redefine the FileNotFoundException by creating a new class which extends it, but I am having difficulty. For my class practice, if no file is selected or passed in, an UnknownFileException should occur.My code is the following:

Java Code:

import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
public class UnknownFileException extends FileNotFoundException {
public UnknownFileException() {
super("We couldn't tell what file this is");
}
public UnknownFileException(String message) {
super(message);

[code]....

But I get a compile error stating an unreported FileNotFoundException.

Private Members Cannot Be Accessed In Derived Class

Jul 3, 2014

When we say derived class that means copy of base class plus subclass specific implementations. But when it comes to private members it cannot be accessible in subclass scope. Does it mean byte code generated for subclass doesn't has byte code of private members of super class ?

Swing/AWT/SWT :: Creating RTFEditorKit In A Class That Already Extends JTextPane

Apr 8, 2015

I'm building a text editor. At this point, the editor should be able to read and write text and rich text. I create an instance of a RichTextEditor class that I created that extends a superclass I created (that extends JTextPane). Both my rich text and plain text classes extends the superclass I created. I use the this.read() to input my plain text from buffered reader. I think I need to use the read(fileinput stream, rtf document) method from type RTFEditorKit, but I cannot use that because it does not extend RTFEditorKit. I don't want to create a new class that extends RTFEditorKit because I need stuff from the JTextPane.

here are the classes on git... the super: TextEditorPane.java

The plaintext: TextEditorWrap.java

and the rich: RichTextEditor.java

I have fiddled with the read() method in different ways. In all cases, nothing loads. If I use the BufferedReader method, it doesn't give me an RTF, just the code for the RTF file.

How should I proceed? Do I create some sort of RTF interface and implement it?

Create Two Inner Classes To ObjectFactory Class

Dec 15, 2014

I'm trying to get to grips with the AndEngine, so I've recently gotten hold of their Cookbook, but there's a section that's confusing. I'm using the Eclipse IDE with the section is asking that I create two inner classes to an ObjectFactory class. I'm not sure if what it wants me to do is doable in java or specifically in Eclipse. This is the section of code the book is asking me to create.

Java Code:

package com.example.helloworld;

public class ObjectFactory {
public static LargeObject createLargeObject(final int pX, final in pY){
return new LargeObject(pX,pY);
}
public static SmallObject createLargeObject(final int pX, final in pY){
return new SmallObject(pX,pY);
}
} mh_sh_highlight_all('java');

Now this is returning errors that I should declare these two as individual classes, but I feel like I am missing something. Earlier the book asks you to create this BaseObject class.

Java Code:

package com.example.helloworld;

public class BaseObject {
@SuppressWarnings("unused")
private int mX;
@SuppressWarnings("unused")
private int mY;

[code]...

It then mentions that the two classes LargeObject and SmallObject are inner classes of BaseObject and extends this class. The ObjectFactory class is meant to determine which subtype of the base class that needs, as well as define the objects properties.

Design Class - How To Organize Classes For UNO Card Game

Mar 20, 2014

I'm currently taking a computer program design class which has done a lot for my understanding of how to organize classes, but isn't giving me challenging enough assignments and I don't believe it's going to be covering interfaces and abstract classes, which is a shame. So I've been digging into these topics myself and decided to work on my own program (an Uno game program) that would utilize everything we've been learning and give me some practice with GUIs.

My current plan:

Have an abstract UnoCard class that determines the basic properties/methods common to all cards. Create a class for each card type extending from UnoCard, which would be - the generic card (number and color), action cards (skip, reverse, draw two), and special cards (wild, wild draw four, and blank).

Two enums, one for color, one for rank (which includes the numbers, as well as the action and special card ranks (reverse, wild, exc.) ).

A deck class would have an ArrayList <UnoCard> property and it's constructor would initialize a fresh deck.

A hand class that also has an ArrayList <UnoCards> where it gets said cards from the deck class.

A discard pile class, which contains the cards discarded and the current card in play.

A "board" class (haven't figured out a better name for it yet) which would determine/keep track of the number of players/hands, the turn order, the locations of the cards, and the winning condition.

Area of confusion and concern I'm having:

From what I've read, I want to avoid circular dependency. So if that's the case, when a card type effects the state of a "hand" or the turn order or really anything else, then in what class do I place the method(s) that effect that? If I place it in the specific card class, wouldn't that create a circular dependency? So would it be better then to have the hand class figure out what can be done with a specific card and what that specific card effects (which wouldn't that hinder the cohesion of the class?)?

I was also thinking a possible solution might be to have the non-generic card types contain methods that return values as apposed to manipulating higher level classes, such as a boolean drawCards which returns true if cards need to be drawn, false otherwise (same for skip, reverse, exc.).Then maybe the board class can determine what to do if those values are true or false (which actually seems more convoluted since only one value would be allowed to be true at any given time).

The other solution I was considering is to have a single UnoCardRules class, which serves the sole function of providing methods to determine the effects of each card, that way each card class can only worry about defining the card's state.

Why Super Classes Always Declared As Interfaces And Not Abstract Class

Q1) My question is Why they declared the List as interface rather than Abstract class?

Q2) i read some site -

List l = new ArrayList(); Why it is GOOD line?
ArrayList l = new ArrayList() ; Why it is BAD line?

Reading Class Files And Search For Access To Blacklisted Classes?

Oct 14, 2014

I am currently building a Plugin system for an application and I wanted to add a little security feature.

I have read many tutorials on this and they basically all came down to the same answer:

"Its complicated: You need a custom class loader and security manager and ... and even then its still tricky"

So I thought, before I load the classes dynamically I will simply read the class files. Why bother with a SecurityManager or ClassLoader if I can simply whitelist all allowed classes and search for all illegal Class access before I even load anything.

Why Use Extends Keyword Instead Of Implements In Generics

Feb 22, 2015

Why java uses the keyword extends when setting the bound of a type parameter(Generic) to an interface. I think using the keyword implements is more intuitive.

public static <T extends Comparable<T>>

why use extends? and not implements.

int countGreaterThan(T[] anArray, T elem) {
int count = 0;
for (T e : anArray)
if (e.compareTo(elem) > 0)
++count;
return count;
}

I know if I want to set multiple bounds I will use extends keyword, and I will concatenate the bounds using & operator.

Is this a design decision to always use extends keyword to set bounds?

Unable To Get Value Out Of Double - It Only Extends To One Decimal Place

Oct 3, 2014

I'm not sure why, but whenever I try to get a value out of a double, it only extends to one decimal place. For instance, (825 / 805) would become 1.0000 (after being run through a DecimalFormat object) instead of 1.0248 like I need it to be (and should be if what I know about primitive variable types is right). Why is the double variable type not giving me the precision I want and, more importantly, how do I fix this?

Accessing Of Static Members Using Null Reference

Mar 21, 2014

Why static member are allowed to be accessed with class-name and a null reference?

Here's the given code.

class Employee{
public static Integer companyId = 1001; // this could be private.
public static Integer getCompanyId(){
return Employee.companyId;
}
//a setter method will be here if the companyId will be private.
}
public class TestStatic{
public static void main(String[] args){
Employee emp =null;
emp.companyId = 11111;
System.out.println(emp.getCompanyId());
}
}

In this code the static members of a class are accessible by the null reference of that class.

These can also be access by the class (Employee.companyId or Employee.getCompanyId()).

What is the difference here in both. why a null reference can access these static members.

OO Design For Library - Maintaining Records Of Books And Members?

Classes:

Category (enum)BookMemberLibrary
Category
Attributes: SPORTS, GENERAL, POLITICS, BUSINESS
Book
Attributes: String title, String authorName, Category category, boolean checkedOut

Rubik Cube - Aligning Middle Side Color With Bottom Middle Side Color

Jan 16, 2015

I am trying to align the core/middle side color of a cube, index 4, with the bottom middle color of the same side, index 7. (Each side has values 0-8 where 0 - is the top left corner, 1 is the top mid corner, 2 is the top right corner, 3 is the middle left corner, etc).

In addition to lining up those two colors, I am also making sure that the neighbor color of index 7(the color that it is attached), in this case the bottom color, matches with the top core/middle color. I will attach some pictures and a print out to show what I am talking about...

However, in my code when I am trying to align all of these up together, it does not go into the while loop. Each of the loops essentially is trying to get a match of same color with index 4 and 7, as well as making sure that index 7's neighbor color (the bottom color, in this case) matches with the top color.

Here is what I have tried:

private void alignSideColor(){//make the bottom colors neighbor match with a middle side value and rotate it to the top, for the top cross

if(cube.bottom.square[1].charAt(0) == topColor){
while(cube.front.square[7].charAt(0) != frontColor && cube.bottom.square[1].charAt(0) != topColor){
rotateBottomClockwise(1);
System.out.println("Trying to align side color...");

[Code] .....

The print out of the ELSE IF is:
alignment is: W-G and tops: R-R
NOW ITS ALIGNED
even though the sides, index 4 and 7, are NOT aligned with each other

I have also tried the same thing but with out the 2nd condition in each while loop, and although is DOES enter the while loop, it does not perform correctly -- index 4 and 7 WILL have matches colors, but it does not check to see if index 7's neighbor matches with the top color.

Here is how it prints out
** ** ** G7 B6 Y1 ** ** **//this portion is the back of the cube
** ** ** R6 W5 O4 ** ** **
** ** ** R3 W2 O1 ** ** **
B3 G4 Y9 W9 O8 Y7 W3 B4 G9//this portion is the left, top, and right of the cube
B2 G5 R8 W4 R5 Y6 O2 B5 G8
O7 W8 R9 B7 B8 B9 R1 R4 R7
** ** ** O3 O6 O9 ** ** **//this portion is the front of the cube
** ** ** Y2 Y5 Y8 ** ** **
** ** ** B1 G6 W7 ** ** **
** ** ** Y3 Y4 G1 ** ** **//this portion is the bottom the cube
** ** ** R2 O5 G2 ** ** **
** ** ** W1 W6 G3 ** ** **

Here is the cube showing the top, left and front side

Here is the left and bottom side. As you can see index 4, G5 -- yes that is a 5 lol -- does not have the same color as index 7, W8.

I need to rotate the bottom until W8 is aligned with a middle white value. An examples of a neighbor is: W8-R2
