User Allowed To Reenter Data

May 22, 2014

In Chapter 9, you wrote a program named MeanMedian that allows a user to enter five integers and then displays the values, their mean, and their median. Now, modify the program to throw an exception if an entered value is not an integer.If an exception is thrown, display an appropriate message and allow the user to reenter the value. Save the file as MeanMedianHandleException.java.This is what I have. The exception is caught but the program starts over asking for five new entries.

import java.util.*;
public class MeanMedianHandleException {

public static void main(String[] args) {
int sum = 0, avg, mode;
final int MAX = 5;
int[] num = new int[5];
try {
Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in);
for (int i = 0; i < MAX; ++i) {
System.out.println("Enter number ");
num[i] = keyboard.nextInt();

User Input All Of Data On A Single Line And Implement StringTokenizer To Assign That Data To File

Mar 21, 2015

By using FileReader, FileWriter and their constituents, I am creating a file to contain employee information ( name, age, hours, etc. ). The user is to input all of the data on a single line and we were asked to implement StringTokenizer to assign that data to the file. I have never used the StringTokenizer before, but I have a rough idea how it is to function. I used pw.println to test what I have so far, now I would like to let the user build the initial file with the "first employees" of the company, and then view the file, and then go back and append new employee data to that same file. My question is, how can I take the user input as a StringTokenizer and add that to the file?

In the for loop below, I thought I would see if it would work, but it does not. The loop only executes once and does not allow me to enter data.

public class Records {
public static void main(String [] args) throws IOException {
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
FileWriter fw = new FileWriter("dbs3.java");
BufferedWriter bw = new BufferedWriter(fw);
PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(bw);
System.out.println("NEW EMPLOYEE DATA SHEET");
System.out.print("Number of new employees: ");
int number = input.nextInt();

Why Static Classes Are Allowed In Interfaces

Oct 25, 2014

I am reading about interface and i see that classes are allowed inside interfaces which are implicitly static. Here is sample of code i created and i am able to access the static method and fields as well. Here is the code snippet.

public class TestInnerClass {
public static void main(String[] args){
Test.NestedClass.printMe();
}
}
interface Test{
static class NestedClass{
static int x = 100 ;
public static void printMe(){
System.out.println(x);
}
}
}

My question is what is the use of such static classes inside interface? If i don't have access to Foo, i can't ever invoke NestedClass. Whats the design usage?

JavaFX 2.0 :: No Tooltip In Custom Control Allowed - Cannot Be Imported To SceneBuilder?

May 21, 2014

If I use an instance of Tooltip in my custom-control, it can not be imported to SceneBuilder any more. Using Tooltip in my custom-control skin works - is that the way it is supposed to be?

Background: I have a control (ValidatedTextField) which uses Tooltips to inform about unwanted characters. It works in SceneBuilder1.x.

SceneBuilder 2 does not "accept" this control unless I take out all Tooltips. I have verified this behavior with some other working controls.

I have found a workaround to use the Tooltip in the Skin.

How User Enter Data Into JGrasp Without Using GUI

Oct 7, 2014

I'm currently taking a Java Programming module in college, the program we are using is jGrasp and I'm currently stuck on one aspect of the language.

I did VB last year and I enjoyed it and got good grades so I'm comfortable with Java in terms of compiling the code correctly and getting it to run with no errors.

But for a project we got yesterday, the user must be able to enter data (e.g. an answer) into jGrasp without using a GUI. This is the case because we won't be dealing with GUIs until next semester.

I'm able to handle the rest of the project, but the part which I can't figure out is how the user can interact with jGrasp without the aid of a GUI.

How To Delimit Spaces In User Input Separating Two Data Types

Jan 17, 2015

I am creating a calculator in which a user will directly input the numbers and the operator...

Here is my code:

int answer = 0;
int num1, num2;
char operator;
System.out.print("Enter calculation: ");
num1 = kb.nextInt();
operator = kb.next().charAt(0);
num2 = kb.nextInt();

The code above will accept the user input when there are spaces like this: 1 + 1

So the program will give an answer which is 2...BUT

if i input 1+1 it will give an error...Exception in thread "main" java.util.InputMismatchException

How can i do that it will separate integer to character? because i set the operator as character....

So that it will accept one digit to several digit numbers... like 500+84 or 1520+872??

Read Text File Into Array Ask User To Save File And Print Data

Jul 14, 2014

New to programming. Am supposed to create a program that reads a text file (of integers) and computes a series of computations on these integers. I don't have the code for the integers in my code yet, (i know how to do those), but am struggling getting the array to simply print in the print writer. I have the user select a text file, read the file with a scanner, and then save the computations done from my code into another file. specifically, the problem is as follows: Write a program that uses a file chooser dialog to select a file containing some integers. The file contains an integer N followed by N integers. The program then uses a file chooser dialog to let the user specify the name and location of an output file to write results to.The data written to the output file will be as follows

(1) The original list of N numbers from the input file,
(2) The original list of N numbers printed in reverse order of how they appear
in the input file.
(3) The sum and average of these numbers,
(4) The minimum of all the numbers,
(5) The maximum of all the numbers.

import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.PrintWriter;

Writing A While Loop To Read Positive Integers From User Until User Enters EOF Character

Feb 24, 2014

import java.util.Scanner;
public class Project_5
{
public static void main (String[] args)
{
Scanner input= new Scanner (System.in);

[code]....

So I'm attempting to have this program take the users input of integers, pressing enter in between each one. If they enter a negative number it lets them know that its invalid. At the end of the program it takes all of the valid integers entered and must add them and average them. I've put the final println in there as a placeholder. If the user types in "6" then presses enter and types in "3" , the output is:

There were 3 valid numbers entered.
The sum of the valid numbers was --- and the average was ---.
There were 0 invalid numbers entered.

It then continues on allowing the user to enter more values. Here is the example output for correct code"

Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): 4
Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): 7
Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): 8
Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): 2
Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): -1
The number "-1" is invalid.

Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): 8
Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): 0
Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): -4
The number "-4" is invalid.

Enter a positive value (EOF to quit): CTRL-D

There were 6 valid numbers entered.
The sum of the valid numbers was 29 and the average was 4.83.
There were 2 invalid numbers.

Prompt User For Integer To Make Sure Length Entered By User Is A Power Of 2

Oct 8, 2014

Basically I need to make a program prompts the user for an integer, check to make sure the length entered by the user is a power of 2 and at least 2. Then I need to convert from base e to base 2 then I need to print the tick marks of a ruler based of the value of the length.

I got the whole converting thing working and the check for a power of 2, that wasn't an issue because it didn't require any recursion. I just don't know how to print out the proper tick mark values.

The way it is supposed to work is that it needs to look like this. Say the user enters 8;

012131210
012345678

Or if the user enters 16;

01213121412131210
01234567890123456

The bottom row is pretty much just the index value, that I print fine.

The top row though is supposed to be the length of the ticks on a ruler, with the middle most value being the value of the conversion from base e to base 2 from above. I can get that printed and what I get just looks like this.

For 8;

000030000
012345678

For 16;

00000000400000000
01234567890123456

As you can see I can get the middle value and the index values below but I don't know how to use recursion to get the right numbers.

Here's my current code.

import java.util.*;
public class TickMarks {
public static void main (String args[]){
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
boolean looping = true;
while(looping == true){
System.out.print("Please enter a length: ");

[Code]...

Now the methods isPowerOfTwo() and printLength() both work fine. However, I'm not sure how to get the left and right side working.

My thoughts were to split the length in half and get a left and right side. I gave both of them arrays so I can keep track of the values. Now as you've seen above I get all zeros and I know it's because that's the default value in an array, I just don't know how to get the proper values.
