User Input 3 Sides - Output Invalid If Does Not Make A Triangle

Nov 4, 2014

I had to make a program that allows the user to enter 3 sides and it should output "invalid" if it does not make a triangle and if it does make a triangle it calculates the area of the triangle and it doesnt seem to do anything but say "invalid" as the out put.

import java.util.Scanner;
public class MyTriangle {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
boolean valid = true;
double side1, side2, side3, area, A;

Prompt User To Input Integer And Then Output Both Digits Of Number And Their Sum

Jun 7, 2015

Write a program that prompts the user to input an integer and then outputs both the individual digits of the number and the sum of the digits.

Now I have a code for spacing out the integers, and I have a separate code for adding the digits. But I am not sure how to merge them together. Both of them work independently

Spacing code:
import java.util.*;
public class SumoftheIntegers
{
static Scanner console=new Scanner(System.in);
public static void main(String []args) {
int num1, test, rem;
int counter = 0;

[Code]...

Now the sum of the integers code:

import java.util.Scanner;
public class sum
{
    public static void main(String[] args)
    {
        // Create a Scanner
        Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
// Enter amount
        System.out.print("Enter an integer: ");
        int integer = input.nextInt();

Sort User Input 3 Words Alphabetically And Output Middle Word

Feb 8, 2014

I have a project requiring me to build a program having a user input 3 words, sort them alphabetically and output the middle word. I have done some searching and seem to only come back with results for sorting 2 words. I so far have code to get the user input but I am completely lost as to how to sort them alphabetically.

import java.util.Scanner; //The Scanner is in the java.util package.
public class MiddleString {
public static void main(String [] args){
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); //Create a Scanner object.
String str1, str2, str3;
System.out.println("Please enter three word words : "); //Prompt user to enter the three words

[Code]...

we havnt done arrays yet and I THINK i have to do compareTo.....how to use it?

Fractal Triangle - Recursion To Make Children Triangles

Oct 7, 2014

I have a FractalGUI and a FractalTriangle class. The FractalTriangle class is what does a lot of the work, it uses ATriangle(s) to make a triangle, and it uses recursion to draw three children triangles along each parent triangle. Fractal Triangle has a method "makeTriangle" private ATriangle makeTriangle( Point p0, Point p1 ) which takes the ATriangles and sets them the right size and everything, but for some reason I can only get one level of children triangles, and they are also already their upon running which they shouldn't be, they should appear when the depth is 2. When the depth is three it should add three triangles each onto the three added at depth two. At depth 4 it should add three each onto the three previously made triangles, and so on until depth reaches 6, the max depth. Here is some code of my FractalTriangle.

The Atriangle class given to us ("starter code") does not extend or implement anything, and has basic methods (setLocation, setSize, setThickness, setColor, etc. )

//---------------- class variables ------------------------------
//---- recursive generation parameters
public static double sizeRatio = 0.5; // integer represent %
public static double offset = 0.5; // offset/100 = parametric value
// child positioning offset
public static double p2projection = 0.5;
// parametric value of projection of
// vertex p2 onto the base; can be < 0
public static boolean outside = true;

[code]....

the way it looks without the recursion looks much more right, but I am supposed to have recursion in that constructor but I can't figure out how to get it right with the recursion. It's so weird how with the recursion the big red triangle ( base triangle ) disappears, and you can see the children are really really small.

Generate QR Code From Input Text And Display Information About Input / Output Bits

Nov 12, 2014

I am trying to write a program that will generate a QR Code from an input text and also display some information about the input/output bits. So far I have created the frame and what to do next. And I'm not sure if I am on the right track since my level of programming is not that great. By the way, I am using zxing libraries from GitHub. I know, there are plenty of generators online for the QR Code, but that is not what I am looking for. As you can see on the attached image, I am more interested in the efficiency of encoding 2D data. Also, I noticed that almost all the online projects regarding 2D codes are for Android. Which is not very useful.

Returns Area Of Triangle / Unless Triangle Not Value So Return String?

Dec 28, 2014

I'm doing a problem where the area of a triangle is returned (if valid). However, I want to return a message (i.e. 'triangle is not valid) if the triangle is invalid.

I'm not sure how to go about to doing this as my method (called area) will only let me return doubles. Possible to return a string in an else within my area method?

public class MyTriangle {
public static void main(String[] args) {
//triangle is valid if the sum of any two sides is bigger than the third

System.out.println(area(543, 4, 5));

Prompt User For Integer To Make Sure Length Entered By User Is A Power Of 2

Oct 8, 2014

Basically I need to make a program prompts the user for an integer, check to make sure the length entered by the user is a power of 2 and at least 2. Then I need to convert from base e to base 2 then I need to print the tick marks of a ruler based of the value of the length.

I got the whole converting thing working and the check for a power of 2, that wasn't an issue because it didn't require any recursion. I just don't know how to print out the proper tick mark values.

The way it is supposed to work is that it needs to look like this. Say the user enters 8;

012131210
012345678

Or if the user enters 16;

01213121412131210
01234567890123456

The bottom row is pretty much just the index value, that I print fine.

The top row though is supposed to be the length of the ticks on a ruler, with the middle most value being the value of the conversion from base e to base 2 from above. I can get that printed and what I get just looks like this.

For 8;

000030000
012345678

For 16;

00000000400000000
01234567890123456

As you can see I can get the middle value and the index values below but I don't know how to use recursion to get the right numbers.

Here's my current code.

import java.util.*;
public class TickMarks {
public static void main (String args[]){
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
boolean looping = true;
while(looping == true){
System.out.print("Please enter a length: ");

[Code]...

Now the methods isPowerOfTwo() and printLength() both work fine. However, I'm not sure how to get the left and right side working.

My thoughts were to split the length in half and get a left and right side. I gave both of them arrays so I can keep track of the values. Now as you've seen above I get all zeros and I know it's because that's the default value in an array, I just don't know how to get the proper values.
