Vending Machine - Tell User Combination Of Coins That Equals To Amount Of Change
Jan 25, 2012
I have a simple java program to write which tells the user combination of coins that equals to the amount of change i.e:
user input 87
output:
3 quarters
1 dime
0 nickels
2 pennies
How the program remembers the remainder which is passed to the next column of let say dime
i.e
originalAmount = amount;
quarters = amount /25;
amount = amount % 25; <---- this is confusing for me?!?! how can the integer = integer % 25
dimes = amount / 10; <--- HOW THE PROGRAM remembers the "remainder" instead of the original user input as the code it self tells you dimes = amount where "amount" is what user input NOT remainder.
amount = amount % 10;
so on ....;
What I don't understand is HOW this algorithm works. I mean we have int amount where user inputs the number we get the first calculation amount/25 = how many quarters and then amount %25 WILL tell us about the reminder. By looking at this piece of code I would say that the system should start the calculation for the dimes again from the original number since the code says dimes = amount/10 AND amount = amount%10. My understanding is that the calculation should be done from the original user input.
Book or code it self is not clear for me how the reminder is "REMEMBERED" and then pass on to the next calculation>!?!?
UNLESS the code: amount=amount%25 gets the remainder so the next code under it is REQUIRED to read from the last prompt code.

So I am making a vending machine and am having trouble knowing what exactly to use or how to go about giving the user a error message depending if they initially added enough money for their choice of drink. So if the user only input 1 dollar, and the drink they select is $1.25, they need to add the $.25, but how do I implement that in this code?
Here is my code along with the zip file just in case.
package vending.sample;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class VendingSample {
public static void main(String[] args) {
int coke = 1, sprite = 2, DrPepper = 3, Pepsi = 4, Fanta = 5, Water = 6, selection, i;
double change, total;

I am having a difficult time writing what started out as a simple vending machine program. As I go on though, it seems that I'm overcomplicating it and it is getting messy, so I have resorted to the forum before I really get off the path. how to clean it up? I'm going to list a few of the problems I am having with the code below:
1. The user is supposed to enter his/her money and the program is to read each value separately (Do-While loop) and keep a running total of the money entered. I can't seem to get the right code format to do this. I was trying to do this with the variable total and so that is why the total exists in the switch statement, but it did not work.
2. In the second Do-While statement, is there a way to kick back an error when their are insufficient funds to purchase an item? Instead of getting a negative change return.
package practice;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Practice {
public static void main(String[] args) {
double count, total;
int item;
//Display Available Options To Customer
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("*VENDING MACHINE*");
[code]....

I'm making a vending machine program to practice inheritance and have a few questions. My superclass is a Soda class, and I'm making subclasses like "Orange soda", "Coke", etc. My first question is, what is the point of the subclass inheriting the instance variables of the superclass? If you have to define them again is there any point in the super class having them? Here is an example of this:
My superclass:
public abstract class Soda {
public double price;
public int numAvailable;
public String name;
public String machineCode;
[code]...
Besides not having to write the vendSoda() method again, what is the benefit of inheritance in a situation like this if you have to define all variables again? My second question is, how could I store all of the code strings from all of the different subclasses in one place? (so when the user enters a code it can search for the code entered to give the desired soda)...

I'm having a major problem in forming the algorithm for my JAVA project, which is a vending machine. I desperately need one in order for it to guide me in making the code. I plan to include an array, switch class to customer and technician portals, item order and retrieval, and change calculator.

Here are the instructions to my assignment:
A shopkeeper in Diagon Alley needs you to write a program that will calculate the correct amount of change due to a customer. (In Diagon Alley they use three coins with different values, given below).
1. Prompt the user to input the amount of sale in Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts.
2. Prompt the user to input the amount of money given by the customer in Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts.
3. Create constants that represent:
a. 1 Galleon = 17 Sickles
b. 1 Sickle = 29 Knuts
4. Perform the necessary calculations and conversions to compute the correct change in the least number of coins.
5. create a formatted receipt recording the entire transaction.
Here are what is steps 1 and 2 and 5 but problem with are 3 and 4. I need to create the constants and use proper conversions to give the right amount of change back.
Java Code:
import java.util.Scanner;
public class OperatorFormatting {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Welcome to Flourish and Blotts");
[Code] ....
Basically, on steps 3 and 4 which are creating the constants and using the to make the proper conversions to give the customer the proper amount of change Due.

I am creating a simple Symptom Checker application. The problem I have is that I'm trying to retrieve user input (JTextField) by comma's using StringTokenizer which contacts the database for a result which matches the user's input (SELECT * FROM DIAGNOSIS WHERE ?, ?, ?) . It successfully finds the correct result however only in a particular format. Not different combinations....
for example, if I enter say within the JTextField: "tearful, nausea, lack of motivation" it will find the result successfully (as that is how it is formatted within the particular column (in the database table) i wish to display a result from) however, if i enter a different combination of these symptoms: "nausea, lack of motivation, tearful" - it will not find any result. I'm very unsure how to make it work regardless of what is inputted first, second or last.
Here is the code:
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
try {
String abc = fieldsymp1.getText();
StringTokenizer str = new StringTokenizer(abc);
while (str.hasMoreTokens()) {
str.nextToken((", ")).trim();

Is their something I am missing/coding wrong?
Java Code:

I created my own class and it basically randomizes the amount of 'spells' [magic] a user uses (range 1-5). I can't figure out how to increment the initial randomized output to make something like this :
User X : uses 2 spell.
User Y : uses 3 spells.
User X : uses 3 spells. (Taking the randomized 2 and increment by 1)
User Y : uses 4 spells. (Taking the randomized 3 and increment by 1)
My current setup looks like this : First one is the class I created and the second one is just how the output would look like. (seperate by +++++...)
My goal is to create a METHOD to increment it.
public class Spell {
// Max number of spells
private final int MAX_FACE_VALUE = 5;
// Current face value
private int faceValue;
// New instance of Spell
public Spell() {
faceValue = 1;

public class SpellOutput {
public static void main(String[] args) {
//Object creation
Spell spellCasterOne = new Spell();
Spell spellCasterTwo = new Spell();

Create an equals method that takes an object reference and returns true if the given object equals this object.
Hint: You'll need 'instanceof' and cast to a (Geocache)
So far I have:
public boolean equals(Object O){
if(O instanceof Geocache){
Geocache j=(Geocache) O;
if (this.equals(j)) //I know this is wrong... but I can't figure it out
return true;
}
else return false;
}
I think I have it correct up to the casting but I don't understand what I'm suppose to do with the this.equals(). Also I'm getting an error that I'm not returning a boolean... I get this all the time in other problems. I don't get why since I have to instances of returning booleans in this. "returns true if the given object equals this object" makes no sense to me. I assume the given object, in my case, is 'O'. What is 'this' object referring to?

String name = "Aaron";
String whatToChange = "name";
String verifyNameChange = "";
boolean changeName = false;
if(whatToChange.equals("name")){
while(!changeName){
[Code] ....
I've been working on a small text-based RPG for fun. This particular part is supposed to allow the user to change their name. Now, the problem is that when they reach the option to change their name, the above code seems to skip the line:
name = scan.nextLine();
It will erase whatever the player previously entered for their name, as well. So it will print out:
Okay, let's change your name. What did you say it was? Alright, so you'll go by . Is that correct? [now allows input for verifyNameChange]
The above code works fine on it's own, but somehow messes up when put into the full program. I don't want to post the whole program, because it's fairly large. But the String name is set and functions fine before this bit of code.

I have to do a small program about parking. In the 2-d array (parking lot), contains different kinds of cars, the user have to :
1)enter which car he wanna move,
2)what direction (w,a,s,d) and after that,
3) how many moves( not out of bound) he wants to make, and finally
4) we print out the new parking lot for his next move
And i am stuck at how to move the car to corresponding position and then prompt user for the next move?
For example:
I want to move A to the right by 1 (d)
擷取.PNG
print result:
擷取1.PNG
How do I do that? The code that i have right now

carPark[1] = new String[] {"b","0","0","0","0","c"};

The question is we have to write a class named Coin. The Coin class should have the following field:
A string named sideUp. The sideUp field will hold either "heads" or "tails" indicating the side of the coin that is facing up.
The Coin class should have the following methods:
A no-arg constructor that randomly determines the side of the coin that is facing up ("heads" or "tails") and initializes the sideUp field accordingly.
A void method named toss that simulates the tossing of the coin. When the toss method is called, it randomly determines the side of the coin that is facing up ("heads" or "tails") and sets the sideUp field accordingly.
A method named getSideUp that returns the value of the sideUp field.
Now we have to create a game program using the Coin class. The program should have three instances of the Coin class: one representing a quarter; one representing a dime, and one representing a nickel.
When the program begins, your starting balance is $0. During each round of the game, the program will toss the simulated coins. when a coin is tossed, the value of the coin is added to your balance if it lands heads-up. For example, if the quarter lands heads-up, 25 cents is added to your balance. Nothing is added to your balance for coins that land tails-up. The game is over when you balance reaches on dollar or more. If your balance is exactly one dollar, you win the game. You lose if your balance exceeds one dollar.
I think I've completed the Coin class but the game program is giving me problems. I got it to add the balances when they land on heads but it only does it one time. I'm trying to figure out how to input a loop but I haven't had any luck.

I am new to OOP, i am not sure if this is the correct approach or not. Write a class named CreditCard that has (at least) the following member variables:
- name. A String that holds the card holder's name.
- cardNumber. A field that holds the credit card number.
- balance. A double that stores the current credit card balance.
- spendingLimit. A double that stores the spending limit of the card holder.
- Bonus: additional fields that you can think of.
In addition, the class should have the following member functions:
- Constructor. The constructor should accept the card holder's name and card number and assign these values to the object's corresponding member variables. The constructor should initialize the spending limit to $2,000 and the balance to $0.
- Accessors. Appropriate accessor functions should be created to allow values to be retrieved from an object's member variables.
- purchase. This function should add the amount specified as a parameter to the balance member variable each time it is called.
- increaseSpendingLimit. This function should add 500 to the spendingLimit member variable each time it is called.
- payBill. This function should reset the balance to 0.
- Input validation: Whenever a credit card number is modified, verify that it is of reasonable length.
Demonstrate the class in a program that creates a CreditCard object and allows the user to change and view the state of the credit card with a menu driven program.
View Card Information.
- Purchase an Item: ask the user the purchase amount and increase the card balance accordingly.
- Pay Bill: call payBill method to set the balance to 0.
- Increase Spending Limit: ask the user how much the spending limit should be, and call the increaseSpendingLimit function the appropriate number of times.

public class CreditCard
{
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);

I have the following task given to me (to be solved in NetBeans) :
View the contents of the file tuinman.txt: each line has a (real) number, followed by a line text.
Write the readGardener () method that reads the file completely. Only if the number is negative, write the rest of the line. (For each input line, a new line output.)
Extra: Adjust your method so you get the text after each negative number, written "word by word", among themselves. A word can contain characters that are not "letters" are (,,. '") - ,this you may ignore.
"tuinman.txt" is dutch for "gardener.txt". This txt file is located in the same map where build,nbproject,src, etc... are located. I couldn't solve this task so i looked at the solution. It didn't work... So i tried the solution of the extra bit:
package labo.pkg2;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Methods {
public void readGardener() throws FileNotFoundException {
[Code] ....
The txt file is added as an attachment to this post.
The weird thing is, the first thing the program prints is "Van" "morgen" "ijlt",... wich are words from line 19 in the txt file. All the ones before line 19 the program won't print, even if the number is negative. Even weirder, the next thing that is printed after line 19 is the NUMBER from line 20, nowhere in this code do i tell the program to print a number, and yet it does... But that's not all! From line 19 on, he just prints every single thing in the document except for the negative number, if your mind didn't explode already, it sure did now!
So in short: I need some code that prints all the lines from the txt files that start with a negative number. Only the text may be printed though, there may be no numbers in the output!
The txt file, i couldn't add it as a attachment
