Wait For External Application To Close
Jun 16, 2014
I am writing a console application that is to make use of the system editor on *NIX. For that I have written a method which writes a string to a file, launches an editor to change that file, and then reads the file again. The problem is the call to run the editor doesn't wait for that application to have closed.
Java Code: Runtime.getRuntime().exec(editorcmd + " " + tmpfn); mh_sh_highlight_all('java'); I need the program to wait for the editor to have finished.

I want to tell my java method to wait one second while something else is happening. Why not use Thread.sleep(x)? For me it stops the whole program and does not let that some else happen. Why not use wait(x)? It crashes. I tried using timers, but that doesn't solve the problem... Isn't there a simple "Java please wait 1 sec for him to catch up"?

I am trying to create a gambling POS system and having problems with a method trying to get a value right after it was set. A jbutton sets another jframe visible which contains buttons. Upon action of the button, a value is set and the jframe is disposed.
private void btnPrizeActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
PrizeSelling prize = new PrizeSelling();
prize.setVisible(true);//create prize selection window
bin = getButton(); //gets what button is selected to load the correct prizes for correct game
prize.DBconnect(bin);//sends bin number to prize loading method
[Code] ....
As soon as btnPrize is clicked it gets the total value of the prizes selected which of course is 0 because it is ran before it is set. How can I make it wait until the window is closed before continuing?

With a simple "Hello World" application, once the println is executed the application exits and the process goes away.
If a simple Frame application is executed, the Frame is displayed, the println is executed but the application does not exit.
public class Frame3 extends JFrame
{
Frame3() {
setBounds(100,100,300,100);
setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
setVisible(true);
}
public static void main(String args[]) {
new Frame3();
System.out.println("You are here");
}
}
It isn't that Java is aware an object exists because if I create a basic non-swing, non-gui object it will exit right after the println.
Q1. What is it that causes Java NOT to exit after creating the JFrame?
Q2. What type of object(s) when created will cause the application to continue running?
Q3. What would I do if I wanted the println statement to be executed only after the JFrame was closed?

I've got the game working just fine, but I don't like the way it starts playing the second you hit the "Run Last Class" button in Eclipse, and would really like to have the game start, then wait for the user to click a button before running the core WHILE loop. Everything is implemented in a single class, and here is the playGame method that starts the ball moving:
private void playGame(){
while (!gameover){
moveBall();
checkForCollisions();
}
All I want to do is pause before the WHILE loop until the users clicks the mouse button, nothing fancier than that! I've done quite a bit of reading, and it looks like ActionEvent may be the way to go, but I'm not clear on how to use it correctly in this scenario.

I need to build an application that can preform measurements. So I have a measuring device that can be connected through USB (with a rs232 converter aka VCP).The manufacturer provided me with two libraries:
C++ : a library (.lib) file and a header (.h) file
VB6 : a DLL (.dll) file and a list (.txt) with all the available functions
And also some demo code. Can't get the C++ code running with my Borland C++ 5.5 compiler but the VB6 code is working.What can I use to integrate into my java code.

So I prefer to use Emacs rather than using Eclipse or some other IDE and I am wondering how to include external classes in my main file?
For instance I have my main file (the one that includes my 'main()' function) and then I have another class (seperate file(s)) for creating a GUI, or making a game and using a Player class, Weapon class, etc. How can this be done? Do I just use 'extends myclass'?

For every stream that we create for java i/o we write at the end in finally block
finally
{
if(is!=null)
{
is.close();
}
}
It works
my question is as per syntax in if (is!=null) this means that if is means stream contain some value then close it(!=null)
then how it in my opnion it should be like (in logical way)
if stream contain nothing then close it
if(is==null)
{
is.close();
}
I am confuse about working this line

I am doing a few Spring tutorials and in eclipse and for each tutorial I have to right click my project, build path, and then add external archives and then select the spring JAR files I want to bring in and use before my project will successfully compile and run. I was just wondering is this required for every project or is there a way I can set eclipse up to look in these locations for every project without me having to explicitly tell it too?

In our product, we have many different of "roles". Some of these roles are defined in our dataload JSON and others are defined in our bootstrap SQL.
Throughout our code, we refer to specific roles by name. We want to provide some sort of documentation for these roles when we mention them in documentation, but we don't want to maintain multiple definitions/descriptions for these roles (ie: we don't want one for documentation and a separate one for execution).
Any way we can "expose" the role definitions to the documentation? The best thing I've got is adding some sort of "export script" to each generation of the javadocs, but I don't have a clue how, or if, that can even be done...

I have a practice exercise here wherein I will add a JOptionPane to a program. When the close button is clicked, the JOptionPane will appear asking the user to exit the program. If the user clicks "Yes," it'll, of course, close the entire program and not just the JOptionPane, but if the user clicks "No," it will return to the program. Please refer to my code below:
try
{
output = new DataOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("ProjSixExe4.dat"));
}
catch(IOException ex) {
this.dispatchEvent(new WindowEvent(this, WindowEvent.WINDOW_CLOSING))
}
final JOptionPane optionpane = new JOptionPane("Are you sure you want to quit
this program?", JOptionPane.QUESTION_MESSAGE, JOptionPane.YES_NO_OPTION);
this.setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
The exercise said it must be placed before the EXIT_ON_CLOSE portion.

I am making a simple battleship program, you have the menu and click Start to get the board with the bombs (4 buttons as of now) Each button has either a bomb or a defualtbutton. I created my button so it can't be unselected. The problem is I have the button in a Class.java and I want that to close in a period of time. What do you recommend using?

I made UpdateInmateDisplayer a Singleton so that I could access it from the private class ButtonHandler. It works to display the first inmate's number on the screen but when I close out the window and click the Book Inmate button in CurInmatesDisplayer again, it only shows a blank window. I've tried adding the components again from the ButtonHandler in CurInmatesDisplayer but it doesn't work.

I'm currently using TextPad or command prompt to compile and run my programs, and as usual I am not having any luck importing external libraries, in particular apache commons.
I couldn't see any particularly obvious settings in TextPad to set a library or class path (which is annoying as I really like the program), so I jumped back to cmd prompt to run it from there. Aaaaaand i don't understand .
This is my file structure at present:
/mainProject //includes .java and .class files, and where I've successfully placed .jar files before.
The apache commons zip file was extracted here, making:
/mainProject/commons-lang3/apidocs/orgs/apache/commons/<folders> //the commons-lang3 folder contains the jars I'm navigating to the /mainProject folder in cmd prompt and typing (amongst many other things) javac -cp /mainProject/commons-lang3 MonsterGame.java //with the -cp being pointed at the folder the .jar is in i've tried pointing it at the root folder where the import statement begins in the code (ie mainProject/commons-lang3/apidocs), tried moving the .jar files to the mainProject folder (pointing -cp at it) and more. No luck.
it seems everytime i try to import a new library something goes wrong..... its become a bit of a stumbling block to be honest. I seem to spend most of my time dealing with the 'administrative' side of coding (that was the politest way i could put it ), am I not doing it right?
I've read I'm supposed to include the .jar in the classpath, not just the directory. is this correct? (it still doesn't work...!)

I need to count external hyperlinks to other web-sites on each page of the the web-site. I've found this code here on stackoverflow:
public class Scanner {
private HtmlProcessor hp;
private String baseUrl;
private int step = 0;
private List parsedLinks;
public Scanner(String baseUrl) {
[Code] .....
Also I've found other working code that uses standard Java but it counts links only in one web-page. Can't create pattern to look all pages on web-site yet.
