What Is The Starting Index Of LinkedList
May 12, 2014What is the starting index for linked list, 0 or 1. I know an array starts at 0 so wouldn't a linked list?

View RepliesI want to find a certain element in array I have to scan through the array index starting from 0 until I find the number I am looking for. Even in data structures which use hashing like HashMap and Hashtable we will have to scan through the keys until we find the key we are looking for. So what is the use of hashing over index based searching? I mean how is hashing an advantage over an array?
View Replies View RelatedI have a LinkedList class that implements a game.
I want to create a list and populate it when a LinkedList object is created .
.
The game constructor takes a word.
How do you populate a LinkedList of any type for example suppose I have a LinkedList of the Integer type, How do I fill it up with 10 integers?
I have just begin to understand collections in Java. I read about the differences between LinkedList and ArrayList but have several doubts on it. I have mentioned them below
1) Why retrieving in ArrayList is faster then LinkedList?. Since both have the get method how does performance differ?.
2) How does re-sizing happens internally in ArrayList when a item is added or removed?. How slow this is compared to the pointer re-shuffling in LinkedList when a item is added or removed?.
My remove(item E) method is working fine if I remove an item that is in the list. However, it has an error when I try to remove an item which is not on the list!
Linked List Class
import java.util.NoSuchElementException;
public class LinkedList<E>
{
private Node<E> head; // head node of the list
private int size = 0; // number of elements that have been added to the list
// Returns the element at a specific list index.
// Big-O: O(n) (due to the nodeAt call, which must traverse the list)
public E get(int index)

I'm doing LinkedList at the moment and I'm having a bit of trouble with my assignment. The part I'm struggling with is remove an employee from a training course (as specified by their employee number),
what I'm confused about is iterating through the linked list to find the employee we're looking for. What I would do in this situation if I was using an array list is
for(Employee emp : myList) {
if(emp.getEmployeeNumber().equals(searchedNumber)) {
remove from training course..
break;
}
}
"Can only iterate over an array or an instance of java.lang.Iterable" is what it is telling me, and I can't figure out why/how its done differently for linked lists.
Okay, I'm having a problem with my LinkedList. When I run the driver program it's telling me that I have no "add" method and I don't know what's going on.
Driver Program:
public class TestLinkedList {
public static void main(String[] args)
{
MyLinkedList<String> L = new MyLinkedList<String>();
L.add("Browns");
L.add("Ravens");
L.add("Steelers");
[code]....
I can't figured out why it's keep giving me error when I tried to add i to the linkedlist. I tried changing it to other numbers but keep giving me nullExceptionPointer.
public static void subset(double[] weight, double[] value, int start) {
double sumWeights = 0;
for(int i = start; i<weight.length; i++){
if(sumWeights+weight[i]>L){
continue;

What are the difference between hashmap, linkedlist and arraylist ... when they are used and why?
View Replies View RelatedI just went through some multiple choice questions and found this question with the below choices,
a) It is not standardized
b) To avoid conflicts since assemblers and loaders use such names
c) To avoid conflicts since library routines use such names
d) To avoid conflicts with environment variables of an operating system
Now , what should be the explanation for answering such question.
I have a Queue class (containing a LinkedList plus a few other variables and stats for my project), which works fine with the standard LinkedList, but I'm trying to add my own code for MyLinkedList.
However, I keep getting a NullPointerException at my remove method.
public class MyLinkedList<T> {
Node head;
public MyLinkedList() {
head = null;
}
public class Node {
T contents;
Node nextNode;

I'm trying to create a Label using AWT (not swing) that is invisible on startup but shows up when pressung a button. Here's the relevant code:
Label:
updated = makeConfirmedLabel("Updated!");
updated.setVisible(false);
Button:
update = new Button("Update");
update.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
@Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) {
MainComponent.updateComponents();
System.out.println(updated.isVisible());
updated.setVisible(true);
System.out.println(updated.isVisible());
}
});
When I press the button I get the following output in console:
false
true
If I start with setVisible(true) and use updated.setVisible(!updated.isVisible()) it works fine. Why can't I start with it hidden??
I tried to use updated.revalidate() after setting it visible. That made it work but it makes the whole UI flicker when pushing the button which isnt desired.
Now I am doing dictionary app using files..
Here i want to print the String from Starting character which is given by user..Here i given below the image like my concept..here we put .(dot and enter R)eclipse will print the method name which is starting from R..
I need to modify the drawShape method to calculate the distance from the starting point (the diameter) of any shape regardless of how many sides I give it, but I have absolutely no clue where to begin with this. The ultimate goal of the program is to calculate the value of pi using the shape that is drawn.
Here is the code:
public class PiTurtle extends Turtle
{
private double mySize;
private int mySides;
private double diameter = 0;
final static double startX = 590.0;
final double startY;
public PiTurtle(int nSides)

This screen appears for a second and after this, it shows up normal app screen. How I can solve this issue? When I open app: after this
View Replies View RelatedI want to read a text file from the starting point to end of the file.
BufferedReader read=new BufferedReader(new FileReader("C:/eGurkha/agent/sample/UptimeRecord.txt"));
String line=read.readLine();
while (line != null)
{
System.out.println("lines are :"+line)
line=read.readLine();
}
By using the above code I can read all the line from the file, But I want to read from the some starting point.
For example : I have a file with 100 lines, from that file I want to read lines from 53 upto end of the file.
I am getting "Type safety: Unchecked cast from Object to LinkedList<EventData>" in eclipse for a piece of code stated below
public LinkedList<EventData> loadFromFile(File file) {
queue=new LinkedList<EventData>();
//Some piece of code
return (LinkedList<EventData>)queue.clone(); //--->getting warning here
}
I know that because clone() method is returning Object, hence compiler doesn't have type information that's why showing warning. I don't want to suppress this warning instead i want to fix it.

I am working on a simple app that should emulate a desktop with some icons that you can drag around. I was instructed to use the MouseListener and MouseMotionListener. The icons should drag starting at the point where the mouse originally clicked down on it (ie not dragging from the top right corner).
I am drawing my icons to a jpanel, and I seem to be having two problems:The hitboxes are offThe icon is being dragged from the top right corner, despite having setup up a mouse offset at the beginning of the drag..Here are the relevant classes, the Desktop.draw() method is being called from my DrawPanel

Just cant see where the array is out og bounds the array ButtonList has 9 buttons....
I am writing a Java permutation program, it takes in N and k and gives k amount of combinations based on N length.
That portion works, but the portion I have that does not work is when k is greater then 1, the array is then then printing strings out of index.
The perm algorithm ends on index - 1 for moving characters but then I push all those characters into an Array List, I would think I could print them off however I want from there but that is not the case. I'll include the minimum amount of code possible.
//permString = 1234 or something, it doesn't matter
//Use Case N = 4 k = 3, prints out 123,124,132,134 ect
//Use Case N = 4 k = 2, error index out of range but only on the printing function; the perm function doesn't take k and
//is based on length
//the "" is just an empty string
permNow("", permString);
}

I am attempting to get the x and y coordinate of a matrix of buttons. I have googled my way to failure and read the docs and I think I am traveling of track.
Below is where I create a matrix of buttons via Swing
public class View extends Mybuttons{
private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;

JPanel matrixPan(){

panel.setLayout(new GridLayout(25,25));

private Mybuttons getUnvisitedChildNode(Mybuttons b){

So I am working on an assignment and ran into an annoying bug. Basically i have a menu that accesses an ArrayList of Videos which may or may not be read from a file, one of the options of the menu is to edit an existing Video. For this I ask the user for the number of the video and it is checked against the list of video numbers if it returns a match, the method gets the index of the Video object and stores it in a temporary variable the user is allowed to edit the details and the object is put back into the ArrayList using the variable and the ArrayList's set() method
My problem is that once i finish editing the details of a video it gives me a indexOutOfBounds exception
On further investigation using a method that goes through the index of every object in the ArrayList using indexOf() i found out that every single object has been given the index of -1 and not 0,1,2,3 etc.. This is my first error and have not expierenced any other before.
The objects do exist because I have read them from a file. I can also add new Objects and view them successfully but they still have the same index . I have checked my syntax and everything and no errors, this happens at run time only.
I have even created some other ArrayLists seperately and debugged them and their index order is fine. I am too far into this project to start over. I've also tried cleaning the project(my IDE is Eclipse).
