Why Is Loop Outputting Line Twice
Oct 29, 2014
I have a loop and I was wondering why it is outputting my line twice. Here is the code:
while (x != -1) // closes the program if the user enters -1 for x
{
System.out.println("Which jar would you like to access? Please select a number between 1 and 3. Press -1 to exit.");
x = scan.nextInt();
ourpantry.Selection(x); // tells our pantry class what number the user selected
while ((response != "continue")) // loop continues until user gives a valid response
[Code] ....
This results in the Output:
Would you like to spread jam? Y or N.
Would you like to spread jam? Y or N.

I created a calendar program so when the user enters a day number and a year it would show the calendar for the year . My issue was that I could not get the numbers to line up neatly and how they should look . Also if its not to much trouble I would like to know how to turn this in to a loop .
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Calendar {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner scanner = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Enter a Year");
int Year = scanner.nextInt();

My current assignment involves me outputting these 2 classes. Yet I'm not really sure in what manner I should go about doing this. I have tried creating a separate class and outputting my toString methods there but for some reason I am getting an error. .
The error message is thus;
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException

I am currently working towards taking input from the user and storing it in an excel document. However how can I test to make sure that I am trying to save it to an empty cell. Is there some type of method that will check to make sure the cell is empty, otherwise how can this be done?

I was struggling to use BufferedReader to extract some data and then perform some calculations and then have the results as outputs.
I haven't quite solved that issue but in order to progress, I hard coded some values into my application and proceeded with the actual calculation loops etc.
Currently, the value out put from one of my calculations is given as:
1.1704926E7
How can I make the console show it in a natural way. I've performed the calculation manually and it should be 11704926.5 I don't want to lose that .5!

I'm having a bit of trouble outputting the difference between two array list
import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.FileReader;
import java.io.PrintWriter;
import java.util.ArrayList;
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
[Code] ....
This prints out something like
Test1
Test1
Test2
Test2
Test2
Test3
Test3
Test3
Test4
Test4
Test5
Test5
Test6
Test6
Test6
Ideally, it's suppose to print out only Test2, Test3, Test6.. I've tried different combinations of loops and equals() but I never get the correct output.

I am using SAXTransformerFactory to output an XML file but can't figure out how to output the stylesheet setting, for example:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE ectd:ectd SYSTEM "util/dtd/ich-ectd-3-2.dtd">
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="util/style/ectd-2-0.xsl"?>
I am using the following code to get the first two lines, I just can't see how to output the third line above.
SAXTransformerFactory mTransformerFactory = (SAXTransformerFactory) SAXTransformerFactory.newInstance();
TransformerHandler handler = mTransformerFactory.newTransformerHandler();
Transformer mTransformer = handler.getTransformer();
mTransformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.VERSION, "1.0");
mTransformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.ENCODING, IBF_UtilXML.XML_ENCODING_UTF8);
mTransformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.DOCTYPE_SYSTEM, "util/dtd/ich-ectd-3-2.dtd");
I believe I found an example using a DOM approach but I would much prefer using SAX.
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="util/style/ectd-2-0.xsl"?>

This is sort of like the last problem I had but it's all about the formatting at the end. I have a file that reads something like:
Name
a bunch of text here
and perhaps a second
or even a third line
I need to output this as:
Name; "a bunch of text here and perhaps a second or even a third line"
Right now I find 'Name' and it outputs:
Namea bunch of text here and perhaps a second or even a third line
How would I add ";" and quotes in the middle? I can imagine that I may need to find name, then skip to the next line and just add name manually as the variable output of the search string.
This is where I am now
public static void main(String[] args) {
boolean output=false;
String name="";
String junk="CHAMBERS";
TextIO.putln("Search for a name");
name = TextIO.getln();
TextIO.readFile("doc.txt");
[Code] .....
So I'm almost there, but those dange double Names are killing me. I tried to add a bit of code where:
if (line.indexOf(name) >= 0){}

How do I make the file reader object move to the next line if there is no more input on the line. Here is my text and output file as you can see that my text file column cuts off on the 2nd line after 70. I want to read that next line which is 100 into my labs variable however its reading it into my final exams variable. I'll also post the code but I didn't think it was necessary.
textfile:

1008070
10070
output:

100908095
1008070100

import java.io.*;
public class MyGrades

public static void main (String[] args) throws IOException

I am Having trouble with my program to validate. It is outputting null into the validation statement then it brings back a run-time error to that validation Statement for the String.
public String validateData ()
{
if (nm == null)nm = "Error! Must enter at least one character";
else nm = name;
return name;
}//end validation method
Why is this happening, and then once that is completed, why is the validation Sentence in tests Scores not able to validate. I traced it back to out put "Error, a number between 1<100".
public void validateTests ()
{
String testschange;
if (test1 < 0 || test1 > 100) {
testschange = " You have entered an invalid number, between 1-100. Please restart!";
testschange = Integer.toString( test1 ) ;

If I want to read my file line by line and when it hits a certain value from that point it should start deleting the lines until the tag ends.Just curious will my code actually work at the moment or not because it goes through so many times then goes straight back to the variable declarations at the start of the method and never hits the console print line.
public void removeEnvironment(){
//declare variable to environment id

String lines = null;
boolean lineFound = false;
boolean end = false;

I'm creating a program that searches a txt file for a given string, then return the number line and the line itself. However, my testFile class isn't detecting my searchWord methods.
The searchWord and recursiveSearch is written in a java class called BasicFile
public List<String> searchWord(String key) throws Exception {
LineNumberReader lnr = new LineNumberReader(new FileReader(f));
return recursiveSearch(lnr.readLine(), key, lnr);
}
public List<String> recursiveSearch(String currentLineText, String key, LineNumberReader lnr)
[code]....
Is it because I'm using a list instead of a string?

I'm doing an assignment for uni and have come across a small hiccup. What I'm trying to do is scan in a text file and read "commands" for it line by line, E.g:
Student Mary 12345 19
Student Joe 12346 19
Change Joe 19 20
Change Mary 19 20
So that lines that begin with the word "Student" indicate that I should create a new student file with that name, student ID, and age.
"Change" indicates that I should be changing the specified student's current age to the new age etc.
What I'm currently doing is something along the lines of this:
Scanner input = new Scanner(new FileReader(args[0]));
String[] line;
while (input.nextLine().startsWith("Student")) {
line = input.nextLine().split("s+");
[Code] ....
The problem I'm having is that every second line seems to be getting skipped (because I'm calling nextLine() so much?) but I can't think of a way to "peek" at the first word of each line without advancing past it. Is there any way of doing this?

how to read file line by line ? Namely my input file I want to read look as follow:
AAA 1, 1
12 222 12
AAA 2, 2
11 122 11
My output file should look as follow:
1, 1, 12
1, 1 222
1, 1, 12
2, 2, 11
2, 2, 122
2, 2, 11
I think the lines need to be stored in ArrayList, then I would like those lines to write to csv file, but how on read I can construct such output file? This is my code for reading file
public ArrayList readFile(String filename)
{
try

I am checking how to do following task.
01. pickup the selected text file and read the line by line and output the text in to visual text pane.
what i did:.
01. I wrote code that read the text file and output in to jave console/ also some of the interface.
the code read txt file:
Java Code:
String fileName = "C:/Users/lakshan/Desktop/lawyer.txt";
File textFile = new File(fileName);
Scanner in = new Scanner (textFile);
while(in.hasNextLine()){
[code]....
so it will read any text file dynamically and output to the text pane in interface. I think scanner code must be execute after the select the file from the browser and set the scanned result in to variable. then later out put the var as string in some jswing component?

I am trying to print a loop inside an array of a greater size than the loop itself. Like for example I have an array of size 7 but it has only 3 elements.
int[] array=new int[7]
array[0]=2;
array[1]=3;
array[2]=4;
now what I want to do is print these three numbers in a loop so that my array[3]=2;array[4]=3;array[5]=4 ...... till the last one. Also the array could be any size and not just 7.

Here's the code: it's while loop inside a for loop to determine the proper length of a variable:
for (int i = 0; i < num; i++) {
horse[i]=new thoroughbred();
boolean propernamelength = false;
while (propernamelength==false){
String name = entry.getUserInput("Enter the name of horse "
[code]....
I was just wondering what was going on here -- I've initialized the variable, so why do I get this message? (actually the carat was under the variable name inside the parentheses.

I have everything else working. My problem is that when i type "quit" to close the outer loop. It still runs the inner loop. The National Bank manager wants you to code a program that reads each clients charges to their Credit Card account and outputs the average charge per client and the overall average for the total number of clients in the Bank.
Hint: The OUTER LOOP in your program should allow the user the name of the client and end the program when the name entered is QUIT.In addition to the outer loop, you need AN INNER LOOP that will allow the user to input the clients charge to his/her account by entering one charge at a time and end inputting the charges whenever she/he enters -1 for a value. This INNER LOOP will performed the Add for all the charges entered for a client and count the number of charges entered.
After INNER LOOP ends, the program calculates an average for this student. The average is calculated by dividing the Total into the number of charges entered. The program prints the average charge for that client, adds the Total to a GrandTotal, assigns zero to the Total and counter variables before it loops back to get the grade for another client.Use DecimalFormat or NumberFormat to format the numeric output to dollar amounts.
The output of the program should something like this:
John Smith average $850.00
Maria Gonzalez average $90.67
Terry Lucas average $959.00
Mickey Mouse course average $6,050.89
National Bank client average $1,987.67
Code:
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in);
String name = "";
int charge = 0;
int count = -1;
int total = 1;
int grandtotal = 0;
int average = 0;
